Missionaries are inherently xenophobic.

Missionaries to Jews are inherently antisemitic.

There is no debate here - the above statements are inescapable true. Intentions do not matter. It LITERALLY DOES NOT MATTER that Christian missionaries BELIEVE they are doing something good by saving other people from hell. IT. DOES. NOT. MATTER.

Because the people you're missionizing ALSO have beliefs, that are part of their own religions and cultures and histories and ethnicities. And your assumption that only YOUR beliefs are correct and must be spread is the LITERAL definition of xenophobia.

Missionaries and bigotry are not seperable.

If you proselytize in your personal life (congratulations, you are also a model of xenophobia and bigotry), or if you support missionaries or missionary activity (ideologically or financially), you are now being instructed to unfollow me, because I don't like you as a person, and I can't respect you while you willfully disrespect others. In either case, you are also now being instructed to cut that shit the fuck out. No one wants to hear about the love of Jesus from you, and if they do, they will ask you DIRECTLY and EXPLICITLY. Unless you're reblogging it to start an argument defending missionary practices, in which case you'll be blocked and/or publicly humiliated, depending on just HOW bad your argument inevitably is.

My grandfather (a physician) and grandmother (who had nursing skills) were medical missionaries, which may be a different type of missionary than you describe above.  Rather than proselytizing being their first priority, medical care in underserved parts of certain nations was; they would go to areas and establish field hospitals and treat the people in that vicinity.  Then, if asked, and certainly not as a precondition of care, they would speak of their faith to people.  My grandmother later wrote of her experiences in China and India and in one described human faith as each person working on their corner of a puzzle, but no one seeing the entire picture yet.  I respectfully disagree with your comment that missionary work and bigotry are not separable, insomuch as “missionary work” can take forms that are not bigoted -- I believe my grandparents were proof of that.  (For what it’s worth, I am not Christian; I broke with that faith over the question of theodicy, and am loosely agnostic nowadays.)

I’m not OP, but I saw your reblog @wcitymike3 and wanted to dig into it a little, because this understanding of certain missionary activities as benign, or even helpful, in limited contexts is a common one. However, and I genuinely mean no disrespect to you or your family, Christian medical missionary work is still inherently xenophobic and bigoted, just as all actively proselytizing activity is.

First, medical ethicists and public health experts generally agree that medical missions of any kind, including “secular” ones, don’t have any net long-term benefits for the communities they serve. They are, at best, a short-term band-aid fix to problems that the medical mission organizations have no plan to or intention to fix in the long run and at worst can harm the development of long-term solutions. And, at their root, they are very much a modern version of Rudyard Kipling’s racist “white man’s burden.”

But beyond the fact that they aren’t long-term medical solutions and reek of white saviorism, Christian medical missions are geared towards converting non-Christian peoples to Christianity. That is their purpose, their reason for existing at all. And that purpose is xenophobic and bigoted. The idea behind Christian medical missions is that by providing sorely needed services, Christian medical staff can gain the trust of non-Christian communities and create a pipeline of communication that active proselytizers can then use to engage in conversion efforts. I’m not postulating on that, by the way, here is a Christian medical mission organization saying the quiet part out loud (it’s in the “how do medical missions help plant churches” part of the FAQ).

Christian missionary activities are wrong. They have created massive amounts of harm in the world. There is no type of Christian missionary work that is an exception to OP’s statement that missionary work and bigotry are inseparable, because at its root all Christian missionary work has the same goal: eradicating non-Christian religions and peoples through conversion and assimilation. That missionaries sometimes offer medical aid, food aid, or education along the way does not make missionary organizations’ goals any less bigoted or xenophobic. It just means that they put some sugar in the, otherwise bitter, missionary syrup to make it easier to swallow.
