i hate to do this but right now, my muse for alex is pretty much hanging by a thread so this blog will be put on hiatus until further notice. i still love her and i still love all of you, so i hope that by giving myself some leeway with this as opposed to letting it loom over my head like some ominous chore i should but never do finish, it’ll come back. thank you for your understanding, if you wanna find me in the meantime, i’ll be over here on carol. i hope to write again with you soon.

Alura steps closer, and reaches out to draw Alex into a hug. She keeps it gentle and loose, hands resting lightly on her back, so that Alex can pull away if she needs to. ‘That’s understandable’, she murmurs, ‘it’s… different’. 

She sighs, and adds, ‘Kara told me that when I came back… she had a lot of complicated feelings. She was happy, but it wasn’t that simple’. She rubs Alex’s back lightly. ‘You don’t have to know how you feel’. 

alex surprises even herself with how quickly she sinks into the embrace, all protests put on hold in favor of soaking up every last shred of comfort alura has to offer. and it’s not a new revelation either but it’s easy to tell where kara got her hugging-skills from. she’d argue that her relationship - or lack thereof - with astra is not the same as the one between mother and daughter but alex knows that this isn’t supposed to be the focal point of the drawn comparison, no matter how much her mind may want to get hung up on it. with her cheek smushed against the brunette’s shoulder, she gives a jagged nod, ribcage expanding and deflating for a couple shaky breaths before she finds her voice again. “can i see her?”

Lillian can’t imagine how this must feel for Alex. How it must feel to know that half of her memories are gone, that she can’t even remember the fundamentals that make her who she is. She knows that it would be irresponsible to promise that they’ll fix this, because they’re dealing with something unexplored, but she wants to. She wants to tell Alex that everything will be alright. ‘I’m sure she will’, she says, ‘though she might want to know why. If you’re not comfortable with that, I have a smaller lab we can use’. 

“i think that might be the better option. i trust lena. i do. but i can’t risk anyone getting in the way.” it is entirely possible that the ceo would be supportive and would try to help them but alex just cannot be sure and she doesn’t want to try her luck any more than she absolutely has to. besides, she doesn’t want to ask lena to lie to kara and they can still bring her on board later on, if need be. that possibility isn’t out of the world, merely put on hold. “i suppose we should try to see if the memory loss presents itself more like the one found with most common neurodegenerative diseases or if there are similarities to retrograde amnesia.” which they’re not hoping for. personally alex is a fan of lillian’s theory; she’d much prefer the challenge of trying to unlock temporarily inaccessible memories over the reality of having lost them. “when do we start?”

A pained expression passes over Astra’s face when Alex’s advice was not particularly helpful. She doesn’t really know the sizes and so she just has to guess as Alex shoves things into her arms and then leads her to the changing rooms. She understands the general concept and well, Astra was nothing if not resigned to see this through. She shuts the door and starts to arrange things. The first thing to do would be figuring out the underthings and then progress from there. There were a few different sizes and Astra went through them systematically. The smaller sizes were no good, but she eventually found that one that was good enough. She found a few items, two sports bras, a nude colored, and the last was a black bra with lace. Not wanting to have to change any more than she had to, Astra decided to keep the last one one while she was still going through items. 

The trying on of pants went smoothly. She settled on one pair of jeans and one pair of sweats. It was the shirts that became a problem. They were a lot harder to not rip. She was trying to pull one that was a little too small off when it got stuck. Astra, trying not to panic, tried to tug it slightly. It didn’t give and Astra teetered slightly. She caught herself on the wall, but it was clear that this simply wasn’t working. “Alex!” While she tried to contain the panic in her voice, it didn’t particularly work. “Can you… I’m stuck. Please help.” 

“the... uh... the number on the label indicates the circumference below the chest. the letter the cup size,” alex mumbles through the closed changing room door like it’s an apology for how she all but manhandled astra. it’s underwear. it’s a fucking bra for god’s sake. it’s not like she’s never seen anyone’s boobs before. pushing her hand back through her hair, alex let’s out a sigh and spins around to lean against the support beam between the cubicles. they could ask one of the saleswomen for help but she doubts astra would appreciate a stranger fretting over her in the already confined space. maybe sometime later when she’s more comfortable with the whole ordeal.

alex must look particularly lost, guarding the door like she is, because she has to wave off not only one but two shop assistants over the span of ten minutes. she’s just about to offer salesgirl number two - a peppy blonde, susanna, according to her name tag - a demure smile for her effort when astra calls for her. “sorry, excuse me,” she rushes out, ducking into the cubicle without a second thought. alex isn’t sure what she was expecting, an alien eating astra’s face perhaps but no matter how comical the situation seems, the panic weaving through the kryptonian’s voice is real. “hold on, i’ve got you.” quickly stepping forward, alex helps astra out of the shirt then ducks her head to catch her gaze, carefully settling her hand on one slender shoulder. “are you okay?”

i wasn’t 100% sold on the last one but i think that was more me being upset with the storyline in a way that you are supposed to be and not with the show itself. which is definitely a nice change. i could get used to this.

Lillian nods in acknowledgement, but doesn’t push. Instead, she sits back against the couch, and links her fingers together in her lap. ‘I think we should start with the basics. A brain scan. J’onn must’ve affected the synapses in your brain, to somehow prevent them from firing. A brain scan will tell us more, and hopefully will give us a place to start’. She frowns slightly, and nods, more to herself than to Alex. ‘The good thing is that I doubt he’s actually erased your memories, but rather made it impossible for you to access them. It’ll be a case of unlocking a door, rather than trying to find one’. 

‘what if he did?’ alex wants to ask but doesn’t. that’s a bridge they’ll have to cross when— if they get to it. she doubts getting her memory back will be that easy but there’s no point in rushing if that means they’re skipping the basics. when you hear hoof beats, think horses, not zebras. “okay. that sounds rational.” even if nothing shows on the scans, it’s a step in the right direction, alex has to believe that or else she’ll lose her mind. no answer is still an answer. “do you think lena will let us use her lab?”

Alura frowns, more than a little concerned with how Alex seems to be taking this. She wasn’t sure what she expected - relief, maybe a little concern, maybe something close to happiness over her return - but not this, what looks like the edge of an all out panic. She wants to step closer, wants to make sure that the woman is okay, but there’s a clear dismissal in her words that tells her it wouldn’t be welcome. 

Still. 

‘Alex, of course I want to be with her, but she’s still unconscious, right now. Kara will call me when she wakes up’. She bites her lip, searching Alex’s face for some way to understand her strange reaction. ‘But you’re my family, too’. 

alex is regressing. pulling away and building her walls higher with the sole purpose of fencing herself off. like they never made any progress to begin with. but alura’s words are like a shock to the system, derailing her train of thought and forcing her brain to a screeching halt. forcing her to reevaluate. they are family and she trusts the brunette. “i—”, helplessly shaking her head, alex’s shoulders lift into a shrug, “i don’t know what to feel.” she doesn’t want to make this about her but even at her insistence, alura refuses to leave. making her think that maybe it’s okay if she does.
