THERE IS RACISM IN TWILIGHT NO MATTER HOW HARD YOU TRY TO DENY IT

this post of mine has gotten a lot of ugly and ignorant replies & tags & comments from reposts on instagram

anyways it’s not over-sensitivity to call out racism (or sexism, etc for that matter) that smeyer wove into her entire series. her treatment of the native characters is repulsive & her racism trickles down into the actions of your favorite characters. it doesn’t matter how dreamy edward is, he used racial slurs against the pack. it doesn’t matter how cool alice is, she used racial slurs against the pack. it doesn’t matter how lovable rosalie is, she especially used racial slurs against the pack & treated them as subhuman. it doesn’t matter how funny emmett is, he didn’t stop her. it doesn’t matter how mysterious jasper is, he was a literal confederate soldier. it doesn’t matter how compassionate carlisle is, he violated jacob black by unconsesually extracting his blood just because he was curious (& i do not care that smeyer conveniently wrote that jacob black didn’t mind... that doesn’t make it right). it doesn’t matter how sweet esme is, she complacently allowed her family to treat native teenagers whose entire futures were completely stripped and altered because of THEIR presence when they could literally exist anywhere else terribly. they are all complicit. nobody cares about the vampire vs werewolf natural enemy lore. that is not the problem. (which... smeyer’s vampire lore is entirely different to common vampire lore so...)

(there’s a lot more to the racism in twilight, but since people are particularly offended that i dared to call out the cullens, those are just some cullen-specific examples)

this is all fiction, so why does it matter? it matters because real people are justifying fictional racism, so what’s to stop them from justifying racism that affects actual real life people?

it matters because real people’s lives are affected by how smeyer utilized twilight to pervert and exploit a native community because the quileute tribe is a real tribe.

i understand this series is comforting for a lot of people (myself included like... why do you think i am even here in 2020 lmfao), but it’s not a direct attack on you to point out that the things you love can be deeply flawed and harmful.

i’m always plugging @renegadepack’s anti-racism resource post but please look into it.

and that very real people that smeyer exploited are in desperate need of our help. the holidays are coming up, and i know that a lot of people who are able to like to give during this time, so please consider donating to the quileute tribe’s move to higher ground.
