Stop by Parada 22
Despite living in San Francisco for over four years, I’ve never had Puerto Rican food. (I mean, it’s hard to fault me for going to El Farolito’s since I work equidistant from Mission and Harrison. But still.) Mexican, Spanish, Peruvian, Caribbean, even Venezuelan. But never Puerto Rican.
If you’re looking for a brunch spot and the line for Cha Cha Cha is out the door, walk 20 yards down the block to Parada 22. They have all the brunch essentials: refurbished wooden tables, pitchers of sangria and enough natural sunlight to justify wearing sunglasses to hide your hangover. My four friends and I walked in close to 2 pm on a Sunday, hoping the rush would be at its end. Even though all the large tables were occupied, the waitress let us sit at the counter sipping on sangria roja until the corner table freed up. (Note: It’s a much smaller space than Cha Cha Cha, so keep your party size small to get seated right away.)
For entrees, everybody ordered a version of meat or seafood sauteed in their signature cream sauce. Pollo, biftec mofongo and, for me, camarones a la criolla. Served with white beans and Spanish rice, it’s a formidable plate for food that I guarantee will not stay leftovers in your fridge for long. (I finished mine a few hours later.)
But the highlight of the menu was a small plate of tostones. What are these things?! (That was rhetorical, but in case you didn’t know like me, they’re fried green plantains with pepper and salt.) Served with side of their cream sauce for dipping - ay, dios mios. Our plate came with five, one for each of us, but I easily could’ve ordered two just for myself.
PS. My Spanglish? Still no bueno.

Movie Fights Reloaded! Better Franchise Hero: Luke Skywalker or Harry Potter?
A lesser known fact about me is that I love movies. Action, comedy, suspense, cerebral, adventure, science fiction - I’ve spent a massive amount of time watching classic, independent and blockbuster films since my first movie theater experience with Toy Story. (My favorite car ride pastime is “Movie-Actor”. You go around picking related movies and actors with the intention of stumping your successive opponent. If I can just get to Sandra Bullock and Gravity having already knocked out George Clooney.. )
I discovered Screen Junkies on YouTube a few months ago after getting directed to Honest Trailers from Cinema Sins (ironically, they are partners now) and have since binged on their Movie Fights podcasts late at night until I fall asleep. My film knowledge is definitely not up to par with their regular fighters, but I figured that I might express my passion and practice my imaginary debate team skills here.
A more popular known fact about me is that I love Star Wars. I’ve watched all six films on three sets of hands, read the expanded universe novels, trolled expensive encyclopedias at bookstores, collected a good number of Yoda bobble heads and internalized obscure facts should they come up on a given Tuesday trivia night. Which is why, for this particular question from a recent Movie Fights episode, my friends may be surprised that I’m going with..
Harry Potter
The question, as Chris Stuckmann put it during the real Wizard World Comic Con fight, is who is the better franchise hero. Yes, Luke Skywalker is one of the most iconic heroes of all films to date - but as a franchise, Harry Potter wins.
Why?
For the simple fact that the Harry Potter franchise is all about Harry. Harry Potter and the Sorcerer’s Stone. Harry Potter and the Goblet of Fire. Harry Potter and the Order of the Phoenix. Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows.
Star Wars isn’t Luke Skywalker and the Strange Old Hermit or Luke Skywalker and the Awkward Sibling Kiss. (I mean, *spoiler alert*, but you’ve had nearly four decades to watch this.) Star Wars is Star Wars. It follows a much larger ensemble of heroes that each have their own call to adventure and subsequent following in pop culture. Han Solo. Princess Leia. R2D2. Even Darth Vader, who starts off as the ultimate villain in A New Hope but later, by end of Return of the Jedi, becomes perhaps the most redeemed hero of the entire Star Wars universe.
**Footnote: Although nobody wants to count the prequels as canon, The Phantom Menace, Attack of the Clones and Revenge of the Sith are part of the Star Wars movie franchise. Therefore, under these regretful but still important circumstances, the Star Wars franchise is ultimately about Luke’s father: Anakin Skywalker.
The Harry Potter franchise is all about Harry. We watch his hero’s journey firsthand. There are no screen pans to other prominent characters and plots in the story. We see glimpses of Ron, Hermione, Dumbledore and other protagonists, but they all circle back to supporting Harry and his eight movie-long quest to defeat Lord Voldemort.
Taking it a step further, Harry is the better hero in general because he is the most relatable. I think what makes a great hero in real life (presidents, athletes, activists, etc.) is how accessible their story to greatness is. Sure, Luke comes from a galaxy far, far away and Harry from a wizard world beyond Platform 9 and 3/4. But for Harry, his origins come from the Muggle world, our world. Because we can relate to so many of his childhood adversities - dealing with bullies at home, struggling to fit in at school, watching your first crush from afar, losing loved ones - we understand his yearning to transcend difficult circumstances. Although we may not have magic wands, generation after generation will watch these movies and still seek to emulate Harry’s bravery, resourcefulness and sacrifice in their own lives for friends, family and the greater good of this world.
**Footnote: Now that I’ve gotten cocky enough to write this little snippet turned essay, you’ll probably see more movie and television posts from me. After all, I spend 75% of my free time (and mayyyybe 15% of my work time) on Netflix.

Rookies with Veteran Moves: 49ers vs. Chargers Preseason Finale
Gold blooded until the very end. Ah-ooo! Ah-ooo! Ah-ooo!
There have been a lot of changes in Niners camp during the offseason. Aside from settling into Santa Clara for a second year, we parted ways with The Cowboy, The Inconvenient Truth, P. Willy, Andy Lee and Jim “Dad Pants” Harbaugh. For a faithful fan, it’s difficult to watch your team lose so much veteran talent - the disparity of experience between Vernon Davis and the majority of the roster casts an uneasy shadow over the 2015-2016 season.
Well, the final preseason win against the Chargers on Thursday put some of that unease to rest. Though none of the projected starters played (I was hoping to see Reggie Bush in red), Niners Nation was blessed with an explosive performance from Australian rugby import Jarryd Hayne. If his Top 5 preseason 175 rushing yards didn’t leave an striking impression with the coaching staff, maybe his offensive shoulder check in the third quarter did. (I know it did on Lowell Rose.)
**Update: I started writing this post before they released the 53-man list on Saturday. Congrats Jarryd!
On a related note, Thursday was only my second time at Levi’s Stadium since the opening preseason game last year. It can’t hold a candle to the historical Candlestick (*booooo* yes, I know) but the variety of food, efficient parking layout and, surprisingly, cupholders are starting to grow on me. The little things go a long way, you know?
They have vegan dogs!
You can bring closed food and water into the stadium, but it has to be in a clear bag the “size of an adult hand”. (I mean, if we’re talking about Shaq’s hand, I can bring a duffle bag.)
Bring a kid with you. Despite your best efforts to get free gear from players exiting the field, they will always, always give their gloves to the kids.
Budweiser and Bud Light are $10. Goose Island and Shock Top are $11. Make the right call.
PS. Thank you for the tickets, Gerald! It took a bit of musical chairs, but we finished the second half in the end zone.
Flour+Water for Sunday walk-in dinner. My agent Parker and I enjoy simple Italian cooking after a long walk into the deep Mission to record the single “Sell High”. Hope this single tops the charts soon. The food is very good, but I feel it may be a tad overrated.
Will post more on the site, but this is the baked hawaii, caramelized pineapple ice cream, vanilla chiffon 🙌🏻 (at Liholiho Yacht Club)
Aloha from Liholiho Yacht Club
More like, mahalo for the best meal I’ve had in a long time.
We’ve had our eye on this place ever since they opened in January. I feel like the most exposure Americans have to Hawaiian-inspired food are fast food joints like L&L Hawaiian BBQ. (Not that there’s anything wrong with that. There’s little to complain about over spamasubi, macaroni salad and loco mocos.) Even though poke bowl shops are becoming popular around the Bay Area, there isn’t truly a restaurant that takes island cuisine to the next level.
Tuna poke, sesame oil and radish on a crispy nori cracker. Who needs a bowl?
Halibut sashimi, cucumber, melon, Nardello peppers and white soy.
Tuna belly misoyaki, sakura tomatoes, watermelon radish and tentsuyu. Such a tender piece of grilled fish that fell apart in the best way possible. It’s belly, belly good.
And I know everything else we ate was absolutely stunning - but seriously, can I get the large togarashi popcorn? Does it come with a free refill? I could easily eat five more orders of this.
We’re definitely going back because by the time my boyfriend’s grilled short rib arrived (with bone marrow and escargot, because of course) I was already slipping into a serious food coma. Baked Hawaii - I’m coming for you!
Tip: If you don’t have a reservation, put your name down on the waitlist and come back later. They take down your number and text when your table is ready.
