People who had to teach themselves how to be decent people, how to interact with the world, because their parents didn't set an example, deserve so much recognition.
If your parents' example was reacting to everything with anger or passive aggression, seeing the worst in others, being self-centered, driving people away because they refused to compromise, if they taught you to feel like you weren't a person and you had to fight to be whole again and feel love and not be ugly -
You deserve the world.
being an adult is just dragging urself kicking and screaming to things that you will enjoy and that will be good for you
clenching my teeth and muttering under my breath "you'll be happy you did it you'll be happy you did it you'll be happy you did it" as I physically force myself out the door to go Do Things
being very firm with myself every time I think about bailing and saying "no. you committed to this. it will improve your quality of life. you will enjoy it. now put on your big boy pants and go."
“What is it that the child has to teach?
The child naively believes that everything should be fair and everyone should be honest, that only good should prevail, that everybody should have what they want and there should be no pain or sadness. The child believes the world should be perfect and is outraged to discover it is not.
And the child is right.”
— Rabbi Tzvi Freeman
“Westerners are fond of the saying ‘Life isn’t fair.’ Then, they end in snide triumphant: ‘So get used to it!’ What a cruel, sadistic notion to revel in! What a terrible, patriarchal response to a child’s budding sense of ethics. Announce to an Iroquois, ‘Life isn’t fair,’ and her response will be: ‘Then make it fair!’” –Barbara Alice Mann
I've been rolling something around in my head.
If everyone receives Minimum Basic Income, what happens to all the relationships where one of the individuals no longer has to depend on the other(s) to survive?
Just let that marinate for a moment.
Not just the economic landscape but the social landscape could be transformed.
Not for nothing, but this is literally part of the entire point of Universal Basic Income.
When abused people can just literally walk away, knowing they can still have enough money to live, the world will be a lot less sheltering of abusers and that is a massive fucking benefit.
It gets better than that, if we go with my ideal UBI scenario, in which we peg UBI to "enough to live in any major metropolitan city in the country" and do NOT adjust it for cost of living.
Suddenly, the poverty and scrabbling for survival of rural areas? Gone. That UBI will go a whole long fucking way out there. Suddenly, people who had to move to the cities to get jobs that paid enough? Can afford to move back. Heck, they can afford to get decent fucking broadband out there and continue working, just, not in the city. Suddenly, people who live in rural areas but want to move to the cities with like-minded people? That's affordable, too. Suddenly, people who want to have a bigger house, but are stuck in a tiny apartment in a city? They can afford to move out to where there are bigger houses.
Universal Basic Income would realign our whole damn society, and I think it would long-term be for the better.
oh btw just in case nobody ever told you. just because your life looks different than you thought it would doesn't mean that your life is bad or wrong or disappointing or less than. sometimes things aren't good or bad. sometimes they're just different
finally I got them all
AUTISM RULES.
these long, lonely ten years… you were my one and only friend
UGH is is literally so much to ask that I have time and money to learn how to tailor clothes and embroider and knit and make cakes and bake bread and do makeup and hair and nails and do all my own diy projects around the house and
like I know this is probably so hard to make but my brain says I could do that and I need to do that
btw since this I have been beautifully and painfully trying to learn to cook, crochet, sew, paint etc and oh boy am I mediocre at a bunch of things but I’m having fun
"im having creation ideas beyond my skill level" DO IT ANYWAY. "i don't have good supplies" DO IT WITH BAD SUPPLIES THEN. "i don't have free time" SO DO IT SLOWLY.
FIND THE SHORTEST MOST DIRECT ROUTE TO YOUR CREATION BEING REALIZED AND DO WHATEVER IT TAKES TO GET THERE
i often get asks that are like 'how do you enjoy anything' and similarly have a lot of detractors on web site who call me, like, 'joyless', and i feel like that's kind of revealing about the way these people conceptualise criticism (& especially political criticism). like esp. when i say something like 'DOOM 2016's central conceit of a heroic ubermensch righteously massacring an infinite horde of subhuman invaders is fundamentally a reactionary fantasy' i think that people assume that means i played the whole game through gritted teeth or threw it down in disgust but nah i played that whole thing and had a great time. i just also made some mental notes and thought them through afterwards. i just find it weird so many people find those things to be in abject contradiction
I love seeing adhders/autistics obviously unmask. Like yes boo, stim and stomp and talk yourself into circles about the cool dog you saw. It just makes me so happy that I get to see the things an autistic person only does when they feel safe.
