Anyone else feel like when they’re in a neurotypical group it quickly becomes a “haha look at the neuroatypical” situation? Like every time I try to make connections with neurotypical people it just devolves into a situation where I feel like I’m constantly being teased for my neuroatypical mannerisms. And I like I consider myself a decent masker but there are times where I still slip up and it feels like every atypical behavior is suddenly something to make fun of. Like god forbid I have raptor hands for a moment, or want to leave a room with blaring lights and music blasting at full volume for a moment. It just feels like every little autistic behavior is something to be mocked or made a joke of and it honestly makes me not want to even try to make neurotypical friends anymore.

There really should be like an accessibility review of tech items. Like getting Bluetooth headphones thinking they’ll be good cause they have five star reviews only to find out said headphones flash a light constantly and play a glaring amber alert like alarm when the battery is low truly is the worst.

tbh i normally hate the idea of gatekeeping but i gotta say, i really think folks who don’t have adhd or aren’t autistic gotta stop using the term special interest. a special interest isn’t just a thing you like, it’s something you’re often obsessed with to the point of it affecting your day to day life. you might spend hours researching it and spend a significant amount on merch for it, even if it means you lose valuable time and money in doing so.

it’s also often a coping tool. people might use their special interest to calm themselves during a meltdown or get through a sensory overload. basically a special interest really is a huge part of many autistic people’s lives, and yes that does mean that sometimes we appear “weird.” imo this is why we get uncomfortable when ya’ll make fun of people for being “too” into something.

I’ve seen so many times allistic people say “well I too have a special interest and I don’t act like this!” Ok, but do you really though? Do you obsess over it constantly? Do you have such an interest in it that you will sacrifice your sleep, money, and potentially your wellbeing over it? Special interests aren’t just a cute way of saying you like something a lot. It’s a real part of being autistic and/or having adhd and its not always fun.

it might be me going crazy during quarantine but the whole trend of making fun of Disney adults seems a little ableist. like what is their crime? being “too into” something, odd mannerisms? Awkward? Hmmm..sounds a little like neuroatypical people??? 😬

What she says: I’m fine What she means: WHY was it canon that Aang and Katara were horrible parents? Aang grew up with loving father figures who he then lost and Katara lost her mother at a young age but was shown to be a very nurturing and mothering person in general. It makes no sense for their kids to talk about how they were neglectful because you know damn well that individually Aang and Katara were loving people who would never want a child to feel unloved, let alone their own.

imagine thinking that autism, a commonly mocked disorder is trendy. imagine thinking people want to pretend to be autistic when one of the most well-funded nonprofits supposedly for us literally used to compare us to monster-like people who destroyed families. imagine thinking that a disorder that was literally a widely popular insult in 2016-2018 and still is in some circles is now something people want to identify with. imagine thinking that one of the most stigmatized disorders, is now something people want to fake. imo, fuck off.

I feel like part of the reason autistic adults struggle so much is that we are expected to grow out of our autism. Like we are just supposed to wake up one day and not have sensory overloads or meltdowns anymore. Even as a kid I thought I’d grow up, go to college, and suddenly not have any special interests. Because you can’t have a degree and/or a job and still watch children’s cartoons and stim. I feel like the older we get, the less acceptable being autistic gets. This is especially true for those among us who have “useless” or “weird” special interests. Even among socially liberal circles, there is still a lot of mockery surrounding people who exhibit autistic traits or are considered too excited about something. If we want to see less autistic adults with confidence issues, and more autistic adults who live past 36, we need to start treating autism as a lifelong thing and not something that magically goes away after childhood.

i wanna see more dumbass couples in stories. couples where both people are stupid. no more power couples or relationships where only one person is an idiot and the other is smart. no, just two people who are equally ridiculous and stupid together creating chaos. that’s my kind of couple.

Family: “Omg why can’t you do *insert random basic life skill*?”

Also Family: Gets frustrated whenever I try to activitely learn how to do said skill, immediately takes over when I struggle, thus not allowing me to actually learn the skill. Often times treats me like a child and doesn’t even actually teach me how to do the skill.

the amount of undergraduate psychology students I’ve seen on here, acting like they are already certified psychology experts and giving out “real” psych advice/facts is seriously disturbing. like imagine if pre-med people acted like they were already doctors.

If you are a neurotypical person who makes fun of or teases neurodivergent people please don’t major in psychology and/or plan to work with children with special needs. Seriously. Don’t do it. Even if you’re only making fun of “odd” people solely online.

If “weird” children or adults freak you out, maybe psych isn’t the field for you. If you made fun of your classmates in special ed or shared memes about “special ed kids”, maybe you shouldn’t be working in special education. Whether you’re at a school or working for a therapist, you’re going to be with these kids for a good chunk of the day. The last thing they need is someone who thinks they’re a freak.

They also don’t need someone who sees them as an inspirational tools for your self growth, or as strange entertainment. Even if they do things you perceive as really strange or gross, that doesn’t give you a right to film or blog about them for the Internet. These children will become adults one day, and they don’t deserve to have their most vulnerable moments public on the Internet forever. I don’t care how odd or weird these children may be, they are still people and they deserve the same rights as you.

Working with special needs children isn’t something you do just because it makes you look good or even makes you feel good. You are shaping the future of these kids and how they view themselves. Would you have wanted a teacher who hated kids or thought they were lazy/stupid? No? Then don’t become that kind of teacher for children in special education.

Disabled children already have hard enough lives thanks to mean peers and a society that hates them. The last thing they need is more bullying and trauma from grown adults.

some of ya’ll need to realize that characters(especially ones with trauma) being flawed and making mistakes doesn’t make them “problematic” or “toxic”. like calling katara or similar characters “problematic” for being rude or lashing out due to trauma is honestly a big yikes. katara isn’t “problematic” she is a realistic and well written example of what trauma can do to people. same with zuko.stop calling every character who is flawed and realistically written toxic.
