Blogging this tweet because this explains SO MUCH about the mindset of pretty much all the folks I’ve known who’re against single-payer, it’s not even funny…

This never occurred to me. Not once. That Americans are against Health Care because they think it actually costs tens of thousands of dollars for a broken arm, hundreds of thousands for a complicated birth, millions for cancer treatment.

Because they’ve never known anything different. The idea that a broken arm is only a couple hundred bucks; a complicated birth a couple thousand; cancer treatment only tens of thousands; all easily covered by existing tax structures.

This explains a lot.  And it’s a good example of what I was talking about in my post on scarcity being used to prop up ableism – always question the idea that a resource is genuinely scarce.  Even if it seems obvious that it is, quite often that’s the result of careful manipulation and misconceptions that you’re not even aware of.  

And never think you’re too smart to be fooled by that kind of thing, it doesn’t work like that.  Similarly, don’t think people who are fooled by something are stupid.  Nobody can have all the information about everything, and nobody has the time and energy to investigate and put together conscious conclusions about every piece of information they’re given.  It doesn’t take being stupid, or even just gullible, to believe something like this.

Jughead was originally coded as gay, as seen in the older comics. A desexualized gay man. It was “comedy” for him to always run from women and then to have these *winkwink* *nudgenudge* moments around men that were sanitized enough that the comics could still be sold to kids.

Instead of having Jughead come out, they just dropped Kevin in when it was convenient.

It was easier for them to have a part of the main cast be aro/ace, because they’ve always desexualized Jughead as a joke and this way they wouldn’t have to change that.

This way they could have a gay man on the sidelines, someone that is barely written about anyway, to make everyone happy and not effect their brand.

Jughead being aro/ace is not representation, it’s a way for the writers to cover their asses.

Exactly, and like? Tbh I wouldn’t mind ace people being into it as long as they addressed the history of the character.

Like using the reboot panels from the reboot comic that made him ace? Cool go for it. Using the ones made at a time when he was being used as a homophobic joke? No don’t try and sanitise that for your ace needs and don’t you dare try and erase the homophobic history because it just shows how… Homophobic you are.

Also: The reason why Pride/Bars/etc seem hyper-sexualised to younger members of the LGBT+ community was a direct response to the fact that the only mainstream portrayal of gay men was desexualised, un masculine and only seen as unappealing to anyone up until activists broke into the mainstream in the 60s and tried showing different aspects our identities. Jughead Jones being canonically ace/aro in the reboot is important and a big step in recognising ace/aro people, but I feel really uncomfortable people rewriting history to say that the jokes about his sexuality were only to confirm ace/aro identities rather than saying there was no homophobic undertones to his earlier incarnations at all :/
