There's actually a bit of a story to this one, me and my friends were discussing what would be equivalent to fish in a world full of machines and the conclusion was - UUVs.

chase backstory design!

he was manufactured for a military sponsor, but developed a sense of pacifism early in his training and exercised his right to refuse the contract offered by his sponsor. for a while he still lived with his military jet family as an outcast not on speaking terms with any of them, a very isolating period of time for him, he spent a lot of time hanging out with the planedog k-9s and playing online fighting games. finally, one of the few people on base he was on speaking terms with helped him connect with NASA and get a job with their space research program

ash’s life history! her manufacturing sponsor was a commercial airline, who she contracted with. she had a long + unsatisfying career in passenger service with them until her type was retired, at which point she had to confront a lot of things about herself. more backstory under the cut:

pre-contract: like all aeromorphs in my lore, ash was manufactured as an adult and trained by her sponsor before being offered a contract. she was generally shy and unsure of herself early on, choosing to take the contract because it was the easiest path forward

airline career: ash had a reputation as a responsible, no-nonsense captain with a good safety record, but no close friends. she only felt at home backpacking by herself in the mountains, but couldn’t admit to herself that it was because she felt uncomfortable living as a man in anthro society

air tanker: when her type was retired from passenger service, ash had to finally ask herself what she actually wanted out of her life. she transitioned, got a (plane)dog, and fell into her job as an air tanker through outdoor connections, which she loves, and now gets to live a much more fulfilling life. she’s still a bit shy, and practical and responsible as core traits, but she’s also much more confident in her career and who she is as a person, and less afraid of letting others see her true self. she’s let herself make real friendships (like with chase!) and can actually see herself finding love someday
