caretaker prompts because I am so lonely

"Sweetheart? Come here, you look sick."

"Hey, it's alright. You're just dreaming, everything's fine."

"It's okay baby, let's get you cleaned up."

"I know, come here. That was scary, huh?"

"Poor thing, I've got you, don't worry."

"I'm gonna take care of you, it's okay."

"Just breathe for me, love."

" Shh, shh, It's alright."

"Do you feel well enough to eat/ drink something?"

"Baby, your fever's going down."

"How do you feel?"

"What hurts?"

"Do you want me to hold your hand/ rub your stomach/ play with your hair?"

someone coming down with a fever because their body has finally decided it’s had enough. they feel completely drained and exhausted. their eyelids are heavy and their head is pounding. they can feel heat radiating from their own body beneath the blankets, yet they’re shivering at the same time. they press a pillow against their chest, searching for some kind of comfort, wishing someone was there to hold them. with trembling fingers, they grab their phone and open the first conversation they see. the bright screen makes their eyes hurt. "hey, can you come over, please..? i don’t feel well". they type the message and hit send.

A vague idea that has always been with me is a character who is a food snob or extremely healthy traveling with friends/colleagues and ending up in a situation where fast food is the only option for the reasonable future. At first they decline to eat, but their friends pressure them into it (we're not stopping anywhere else; you can't go to bed without dinner; we don't have time to get real food right now; stop being such a brat; etc etc). They try to get the healthiest thing they can, but it still upsets their stomach. At first, their friends think they're being dramatic (we get it, you don't like fast food; sorry princess, we'll try to accommodate your royal standards you next time; you don't have to rub it in) until they actually start vomiting

(Bonus points if it's food poisoning, not just a bad reaction to hyperprocessed food 🥰)

Two emotionally constipated pining morons on the couch together sharing a cold and the One Box, both distractedly reaching for it as both their breathing starts to hitch, WHOOPS their hands brush over it and their shocked eyes meet for THE MOST INTENSE SPLIT-SECOND before -

I just wanna add the idea that they both suddenly need to sneeze at the same time, reach for the same tissue, and neither are prepared to give it to the other so they hitch simultaneously then all but crash their heads into each other as they sneeze into the same tissue.

i have been quite fond lately of the classic mental image of Caretaker finding Whumpee, emaciated and beaten, huddled behind a dumpster or in some nook or cranny, just desperately trying to hide from the elements and from anyone who might find them. anyway,

"god, you’re burning up… have you been feeling sick all day?"

"i.. think so.."

Thought for the day

A is annoyed at B for being in the shower for ages and using all the hot water. Unbeknownst to them, B has come down with something, and the shower was the only thing relieving their congestion. Not to mention comforting and warm against their achy body.

A goes to confront them, but their whole demeanor softens when they find B perched on the edge of the bed, towel pulled tightly around them. Still naked and damp, shivering, and sneezing pathetically.

Any variation of ‘you really don’t feel well, do you?’

“You are sick, aren’t you?”

“Poor thing, you have got it bad haven’t you?”

It gives me butterflies, every time.

Just read a bunch of intriguing anecdotes from women whose husbands got so so so nervous before proposing that said wives thought said husbands were sick (sweaty, shaking, upset stomach)

Imagining a sick character coming up to their friend/partner and, rather than announcing that they're sick, simply leaning against them like a cat. Cue the other's exclamation of "wow, you feel warm," and the sickie mumbling "I know" into their shoulder. Bonus points if they're not usually this touchy feely.

A stubborn sickie is always nice, but what about sickies that don't hide that they dont feel good?

• "Can you check if I have a fever?"

• "Hey, you okay? You got really pale all of a sudden." "N-no, I'm about to---mmph!---throw up..."

• "Do you know where the ibuprofen is? My head is killing me."

• "I think I'm coming down with something..."

• "What's wrong, sickie? You seem off today." "I don't feel well..."

• "My stomach hurts..."

• Sickie waking up Caretaker because they need something and feel too bad to get it themself

• Sickie starting to feel ill while out with Caretaker and asking them if they can go home

• "My body's so achy right now..."

• "Caretaker? Can you come home/pick me up? I feel like crap."

• "Can you make me some tea please?"

• "I-I---woah---I need to s-sit down..."

• "God, I feel nauseous..."

• Caretaker finding Sickie taking their temperature

• "You don't look so good." "I don't feel so good."

• "Oh no! Are you sick?" "I think so..."

• Sickie pressing their blazing forehead to Caretaker's colder forehead/neck/shoulder/etc for relief

• "You got me sick."

• "My bones feel like lead..."

• "I don't think I can even sit up without getting dizzy..."

• Sickie leaning on Caretaker because they're too weak to walk on their own

• "I just threw up..."

• "As much as I'd love a good morning kiss, I don't think you want my cold."

• "I'm so tired..."

just wrote a 6.5k appendicitis fic (project hail mary) on my main so here are some highlights:

-writing off pain as stress and anxiety, progressively thinking "damn i must be more stressed than i thought" as it gets worse

-not even questioning chills. just assuming it's cold in the room. not even bothering to be like "is it just me?"

-caretaker accusing whumpee of being sick all day and whumpee insisting it's stress not because they're hiding it, but because they're a chronic overachiever and have more or less divorced their body from their mind as a defense mechanism (or alternatively because they have a chronic condition or chronic pain that requires them to tune a lot out, that's not the case in the fic but it's a fav of mine)

-caretaker becoming frustrated with whumpee for pushing themself and for making excuses every time they have a pain spike or get dizzy or whatever

-whumpee just genuinely not realizing that they're in trouble until it's so bad that they can barely move and caretaker has to get them medical attention while panicking

-CARETAKER WHO FOR SOME REASON OR ANOTHER CANNOT GET TO WHUMPEE. frustrated and scared and helpless caretaker my beloved

-caretaker who is torn between wanting whumpee to rest and heal and wanting them to wake up

-the conversation afterward omg. that's the magic. where it's beautiful. the "why would you do that and scare me when i told you all day that you were being stupid?" and being torn between relief that whumpee is okay and anger that they let it get so bad

-and whumpee apologizing for scaring them, saying they didn't want them to worry over nothing, saying that they didn't know something was THAT wrong but they should have listened to caretaker anyway because they were right. caretaker forgiving whumpee when they promise never to do it again <3

Out of all the phrases to dub someone as “sick”, there is something particularly delicious about the term “unwell” or any variation of.

I’m imagining a person gently cupping the side of a sickie’s face, taking in their sweat-dappled brow, their loss of color aside from flushed cheeks and a red nose, the sheen across their eyes that tells of a mild fever potentially getting worse.

They frown as the sickie melts into their palm, and they coo out:

“You don’t look well at all…”

Gets me every time.
