nobody “writes like ai” as long as they write, then they write. period. there’s no “writing like ai”. because by saying someone “writes like ai”, you’re implying that ai actually writes and that ai is the blueprint. but what ai does is mimic human-made works.

ai writes (aka they’re mimicking) like humans. not the other way around.

saying “this writer writes like ai” is the equivalent of saying “your work looks like those other works that copied yours”

There are tells. Repeated looping sentence structure, uncommon use of punctuation that keeps repeating. Thesaurus vocabulary 4x on the same page. Characters who are obviously mashes of keywords. Outlines that fit the three act structure with no side arcs or ones that go nowhere and dont serve the spine plot. There are little tells that a plagiarism clanker did a dishonest amount of legwork. And as a writer it doesnt threaten me, I just think the honorable thing is to labe AI generated content as such.

Pay for play visibility, "advertising companies", booktok fraud and purchasing false product reviews are much larger threats to the integrity of the industry.

if you can't write like a trained author and have a story in you that you want told, theres nothing wrong with AI like i said as long as you are honest in advertising it as such.

Whats more destructive and dishonest are things like the Amazon monopoly, push for literary censorship, and visibility for sale instead of traction being allotted based on objective merit along with the extinction of honest reviews by interested enthusiasts in favor of praise mills that sell positive reviews on blogs and websites nobody trusts, not to mention "influencers" with bot and train follower counts acting interested in a review preview copy and then lastminute asking for a $5-20 fee to mention your work on their scam bloated platform.

Also though if your skill level can be mistaken for bot generated content, you might want to polish and sharpen your craft before putting anything out into the market commercially. You throw the first few novels on the backburner for future rewrites like you toss out the first waffle you make in a batch. Writing 50k words in a 3 act structure is only an accomplishment because we live in an era of illiteracy. Too many modern authors think the first draft of the first attempt is a completed work and unfortunatly get mocked for their efforts instead of taken in by the community on a sense of fellowship and offered kind constructive feedback for imrpovements.

The over-educated and over-trained also in a horse shoe situation churn out work that sounds bot-generated and studying creative writing in school without simultaneously learning the subversions to the "rules" and how to use them produces a dreadful samevoice that it took almost a full decade after my degree to train back out of me. People will read volumes of theory on constructing plot and character and then never take the time to develop their own sense of voice.

Although it is lumped with the arts, writing is more of a trade like carpentry. Its about construction and decorating with detail work. You need protractors and rulers and one of those balance bubbles to make a nice table in the most basic form but because we lump it as an art we have people carving ornate loving detail work into tables that themselves are lopsided, won't hold any weight, and no amount of ornamentation or passion will change the fact that the table itself is shoddily built.

Visual art is fluid, only requires skill eye or steady hand if you are going for realism, and is nakedly expressive and in many ways too slippery to criticize or quantify in as absolut a way as writing is. I personally believe it should be a trade you go to trade school for, not something you get at a school full of painters, actors, and people earning a masters degree in basket weaving, who need to know more symbolism, theory, composition, and style variety and practice with their hands where fiction longer than a short story usually requires you to be able to construct an outline (blueprint), assemble the structure, and then make it pretty in intense revisions/rewrites (like how you would construct, assemble, and then add decorative elements if you were trying to make a public park bench). I feel similarly about "metal sculpting" being better learned as a creative trick once you've mastered commercially competent welding.

You cannot learn or teach art or artistic skill, you are born blessed or you arent (i was not). Acting is a mutation of benign psychopathy used for creative expression instead of personal manipulation, painting is about having good motor coordination and a strong brain-body connection like an athlete, you can learn to do them mediocre but no amount of education will get you past your natural ability's cap. You could teach anybody ust barely able enough to use a talk to text and connect one lucid thought to the next to learn technique and communicate a piece into their accessibility device and have them train for 3-5 years to construct an technically impeccable piece of writing.

if somebody says you "write like AI" and you genuinely didn't use plagiarism clankers, the actual critique is to vary the rhythm of your sentence structure, expand your vocabulary, understand structural subversion as a literary device, and train your voice to its true potential. On the opposite end it could mean you are writing over the reader's head, dropping plot threads (likely because you are drafting without outline and didnt revise), using cold thesaurus-speak/repeating very specific words too often, or the piece has a sense of shallow underdevelopment. it mean you weren't ready for market as is. It means your peace has a coldness to it blocking the reader from emersion or connection. Those can all be corrected by reading up on theory.

Literally none of those things you mentioned are tells for AI some people just write like that. That’s where AI learned it. And sure it’s a threat to paid authors 100% but fic writers? It’s not even against Ao3’s terms of service. AND THERE IS GENUINELY NO WAY TO 100% TELL. Just click off the fic. Fic writers don’t need to be professional they can just write. It’s a free hobby.

Like they tried to change Reblogs and people rightfully got up in arms, this is a LOT worse. In order to have access to any sort of thing dubbed mature, and We haveALL seen what they think is mature, Everything from a black and white photo of a black woman's arm, to posts about IUD recalls, to a nude painted by a 17th century artist, to anything involving the word Trans; you have to send your personal information to a third party site that WILL get hacked, and you will be doxxed. And they can say "Oh shit, well it wasn't us who sent your name address and gender identity to Moldovan teenagers, here's a couple extra minutes in the ball pit.

That's bad enough!!!!!!!! But the entire idea of needing permission from state authorities to access anything labeled mature by our friendly AI overlords is some fucking Boll shit. Die Gedenken Sind Frie baby. This is all a reaction to people getting uppity about their lowly lowly rights and is being propped up by the same bad actors tht have made life unlivable. Fuck that shit.

Tumblr has to follow the laws of the UK and Brazil in order to continue to operate in those countries but we can do is tell them to get better at deciding what is mature content. A woman in a skirt just standing there should not be marked. A trans person existing shouldn’t be marked. And then in the UK and Brazil they need to take this up with their governments see if it’s possible to pressure their lawmakers into overturning this
