First Contact, a short story from Runaway to the Stars. Talita, having grown up in human foster care, was about 5 years old when she first met another centaur.
This is one of many rotating habitats in Nexus Jovia, a space station megacity in high orbit of Jupiter. The spherical structure is something like a looping valley, with centrifugal “gravity” that decreases exponentially the further you walk up the the sides. The Capital Ball district is the center of most governmental functions for the polity of Jovia, but it’s also a bit of a tourist hotspot.
Read this in a pdf format here! Read more stories from Talita’s childhood here and here!

Hate the 4 or so days after peeling a bandaid off where you have to wait for the stupid red mark to go away
That’s what you all said about pomegranates a few days ago. Tumblr doesn’t get to armchair diagnose me with two allergies in the same week, that isn’t fair.
Stop being maybe allergic to things then /j.
I’ve gone through my entire life with basically no allergies and I’m not about to start now
#could also be an adhesive allergy! i am fine with latex but some bandaids man
Given that the persistent red parts and dry skin are always in the ‘shape’ of the adhesive part that’s probably it
“Pomegranate allergy is seen in conjunction with allergies to other foods presenting as Latex Food Syndrome, which is caused by the body confusing the proteins it encounters in food to that of latex proteins to which it is already sensitised.”
“There are 3 allergens thought to cause allergic reactions in pomegranates, these are called Pun g 1, Pun g 7 and Pun g 14. Pun g 14 is a chitinase protein. This is a plant derived enzyme made by plants naturally to act as a defence against fungal attacks. Chitinase is a protein associated with an allergy to latex.”

You’re saying it’s possible that my body throws hissy fits over delicious fruit and medical treatment because it’s freaking out over an antifungal protein?
WAIT. MAIZE IS ON THIS LIST.
IS SWEETCORN NOT SUPPOSED TO SOFTEN THE ROOF OF YOUR MOUTH UP AND HURT LIKE HELL FOR HOURS?? IS THAT AN ALLERGY THING??
May I offer moral support?
I spent my entire life thinking tomatoes were spicy. Turns out, they’re not. I was 36 when I learned that I’m allergic to some kind of pollen that also triggers on raw tomatoes. :S
At least you get an entirely different depth of flavour from the average burger! XD
If Lynati is right I might have one single allergy that wants to fuck my life up in multiple distinct ways.
The irony here is that I only mentioned bandaids because I was using them to secure samples to my skin for a pomegranate test last week.
I don't animate so don't look too hard
It’s time to start the clock on Sherlock Holmes, folks.
First, a brief primer on copyright.
Contrary to what you may have heard, copyright doesn’t directly cover characters, or ideas, or anything of the sort: it covers specific works, as well as any derivatives of those works.
“Specific works” is the easy part: a book, a movie, a drawing, those are all specific works.
“Derivative works” is trickier. The basic idea is that you can’t trace over a drawing or take a story and search-and-replace the names of all the characters and call it your own original work. In practice, most jurisdictions, including the United States, have tended to interpret the notion of derivative works much more broadly than that – and that’s where the Doyle estate comes in.
See, though most stories about Sherlock Holmes are old enough that they fall into the public domain, and can therefore be used by anyone, a tiny handful of them, published near the end of Arthur Conan Doyle’s life, are recent enough that they still have valid copyrights – which are now owned by Arthur Conan Doyle’s estate, which is to say, the people who inherited all his shit when he died, and their descendants, and so on.
Though the Doyle estate only owns a small number of stories, for many years they’ve been cheerfully exploiting the American legal system’s extraordinarily broad notion of derivative work to stick their oar in every time somebody wants to publish Sherlock Holmes media without giving them a cut.
Basically, they go over it with a fine-toothed comb, looking for any microscopic piece of Sherlock Holmes lore that they can claim is present only in the few remaining stories that they own, and not in any of the stories that fall into the public domain.
This is where those articles you might have run into about Sherlock Holmes not being allowed to show emotions or respect women or whatnot come from: the Doyle estate pointing to some specific attitude or mannerism or turn of phrase which, they claim, is only present in the handful of stories they still own, and not in any of the others, and therefore you owe them all your money.
(Would those claims stand up in court? Almost certainly not, but the Doyle estate has a fuckoff huge legal budget and very few people have the time, inclination, or resources to fight them, so they’ve mostly been getting away with it.)
There’s an end in sight, though. In the United States, for all works published before 1978 – except audio recordings, for deeply stupid reasons – there’s an easy-to-determine limit on the duration of copyright: the date of publication plus 95 years. The copyright on pre-1978 works can expire in less than 95 years in certain circumstances, but it can’t be extended beyond that: publication plus 95 years is a hard cutoff.
Consequently, the number of remaining stories that the Doyle estate owns has been steadily shrinking.
First it was ten stories.
Then six.
Then just two, which were both published in the same year: 1927.
1927 + 95 = 2022.
In other words, this is the last year that the Doyle estate can claim to own any works at all in which Sherlock Holmes appears. After this, they’ll have nothing left to exploit.
364 days until the Doyle estate can get fucked.

VACCINATE YA KIDS FFS
The other thing about measles is that it resets your body’s memory of other diseases. So all those times you’ve gotten sick? Your body’s memory cells no longer remember those illnesses, so even if you get the same type of illness again your body will react like it’s the first time you’ve been sick.
It’s so much worse than “just a disease”.
Measles does WHAT
Holy fuck
What the fuck what the fuck what the fUCK WHAT THE FUCK WHAT THE FUCK
antivaxxers also, in part, helped sabotaged the human lyme disease vaccine for lyme disease caused by borrelia burgdorferi infection (until 2016 the only known species of lyme disease causing bacteria in the USA). In 1998, the first lyme disease vaccine for the strain of the bacteria prevalent in the USA licensed. It passed clinical trials and was shown to be safe and effective; it was between 76 and 92% effective at preventing lyme disease with 3 injections. Antivaxxers proceeded to abuse the adverse affect reporting system, often complaining of arthritis, and this caused media and general hysteria about the vaccine. if you remember the flu vaccine hysteria around the swine flu epidemic, it was kind of like that. despite double-blind trials conducted both before and after licensing, that was unable to support their claims and instead displaying that the vaccine was safe and effective, the damage was done, and the vaccine was shelved in the USA. you can get a lyme disease vaccine in Europe, but Europe has a different strain of the bacteria that causes lyme disease.
Lyme disease can become very serious, it can infect the nervous system and cause neurological problems especially in young children who are often bitten on the head or the neck, undiagnosed it can cause chronic health issues that mimic other diseases. Without safe prophylactic measures beyond trying to minimize contact w ticks, this has driven people who have had lyme disease, have chronic effects from mass-disseminated lyme disease infection, or people who believe they have chronic lyme disease to go to quack doctors and undergo unsafe, unapproved medical treatment in an attempt to stop suffering.
This would not be happening on the scale that it is if antivaxxers didn’t straight up execute a supervillain plot to sabotage the lyme disease vaccine. the vaccine was licensed in december 1998, which was the year andrew wakefield published his fraudulent research on the MMR vaccine

these people are fucking dangerous beyond compare
edited for clarity
antivaxer are terrorists and should be dealt like one
H.Bomberguy’s video on the anti-vaccine movement is absolutely worth watching in its entirety. Because it lays out just how fucking twisted and wrong the entire thing is, and how this entire movement that is KILLING CHILDREN is based on a lie for money.
wait wait wait wait WAIT!
YOU GUYS HAD A VACCINE AGAINST FUCKING LYME????
AND THOSE ASSHATS HELPED TO SHELF THAT STUFF?????????
Do you people even KNOW just how much trouble lyme disease makes every fucking year? Holy shit think of the possibilities!!!
So when I say I hate anti-vaxxers, yeah. This is why.
Yeah its not a viable belief system, it doesn’t have any nugget of truth or good intentions in it, the lie and the packaged alternatives that come with it are quicker easier money than you could ever make climbing the ranks of “big pharma,” these lies kill people, they become politicized and contaminate government legislation, and believers are not just quaint fringe eccentrics who only harm themselves. They’re abusing their kids, hampering medical progress, robbing other people of medical choice in situations like the Lyme vaccine, and actively making the world around them worse and deadlier. No mercy or tolerance for anti vaccine propaganda. Make it legally terrorism.
Gonna say it on every reblog of this post I see - This began because of ableism against autistic people. Jenny McCarthy insisted that her child’s autism was caused by vaccines, and enough people hated the thought of ever having an autistic child that they wouldn’t use vaccines. They did not care that their child would die of the illnesses prevented by vaccines, they would rather have a dead child than an autistic one.
How about some repeating patterns?
Not me cleaning up and reviving my Tumblr account after 3 years
Hi friends
I'm back
This time with better art
Just a reminder that Vincent van Gogh did not eat yellow paint to make himself feel happy, he ate paint, and drank different chemicals because he was suicidal and this is why he was not allowed in his studio while having breakdowns. He also did not paint starry night and his other great works because he was depressed, he painted most of them while he was in recovery and demonstrated his hopefulness and love of the world through this. Most of his great works were painted from his room at a hospital. Van Gogh’s depression should not be glorified. His hope and effort toward a better life, as well as his recovery from depression should be glorified.
