See, from a comic book, writing, and real life standpoint, I just donāt see this working out well. They are both mentally un-fit, and one of them is straight out of an abusive relationship. Not only that, but she was the submissive one of that relationship and took tons of crap all the time from someone who was mildly power-hungry. Ivy is all about controlling people. Thatās what she does. And she, being mentally ill, would probably wind up becoming another abuser in the long run. Reading things like this sounds super uncharacteristic for both of them. It seems more like they have been re-written than anything, which kind of stinks. If I was writing it, I probably would make their relationship descend into abuse later on once the honeymoon phase is over, if nothing else to bring awareness to abuse in w.w relationships that is so prominent. It would also be very realistic both statistically and circumstantially.
@awolfnamedfox What is your fucking damage? Let gay characters be gay even if theyre mentally ill. Dont say its more statistically relevant one becomes an abuser you piss stain.
Iām sorry to have upset you, but I did state that this comes from my standpoint as a writer, comic fan, and realist. I donāt appreciate the hypocritical comments of asking why I would say something like this when you called me an incredibly degrading name in the same response to my post. If I were to tell you ālet straight characters be straightā about the variety of comic characters who have been rewritten to change their sexuality to appease a demand from the lgbt community, you would likely get upset with me. It isnāt about them being homosexual or not. Itās about realism. It isnāt believable. I, personally, donāt appreciate the mediaās statistical over-representation of the lgbt community in media and the rewriting of long standing backstories because of this, as the issue could simply be solved by rewriting a character without a long standing backstory or making an entirely new, non-stereotypical, original character, which I, and many others, would have much preferred as opposed to changing an established character. This statement will likely also upset you, but I challenge you to turn that anger into something constructive rather than lashing out at a stranger on the internet because, as you stated, you know nothing about me. I happen to be a rather stoic person and do not tend to use emotions as my first response, but rather logic and realism. This is my personality, which I can not change. I can empathize with wanting to have positive representation of a collective group yourself or a loved one is a part of, and often wish that for myself, but I would be happier with an accurate representation than a forced positive that isnāt believable. I realize that this is a trait unique to those who share my priorities and personality traits, and I realize that more often, other human beings would rather have the forced positive representation than accuracy if it means shedding light on something bad about a group, because the majority of human beings, at least in countries with access to comics and other forms of media, are emotively driven rather than driven by reasoning, and there is absolutely nothing wrong with being that way. DC Comics has often dealt with deep and heavy subject matter, and this would be no different, and in fact, could be quite helpful and sympathetic to women or men who had gotten out of a bad relationship only to find themselves in another abusive one. Actually, Iām not totally understanding why there is such a big fuss about this in the first place, because there is already a closely related character, who is a hero not a villain, who falls into the category of lesbian. That would be Batwoman. Itās actually a very well written comic book series with a very unique art style. I wish I had gotten to read more of it, but I wasnāt able to afford it at the time. Maybe someday though. Anyway, I would much rather see women looking up to the positive relationship of a positive character than that of villains. It seems to be a healthier option. I have thought this for quite some time, as so many women praise Harley and have even stated that they āneed to find their Jokerā when in fact that would be a terrible fate to befall anyone. Simply put, I am a fan of comics, and I was stating my opinion on the writing of this story line and what I would like to see from my standpoint as a writer myself. I hope this clears up any grievances you had with my statement, as you have hopefully come to the conclusion that I am entitled to an opinion as a fan of DC Comics and as a writer and your fellow human being. I wish you great understanding and patience with those who differ from you in the future. Thank you for your feedback. It is always refreshing to hear a different perspective, even if I still do not hold it as my own. Godspeed, fellow human.
Found the homophobe lmao
You are beyond help my ārealistā fellow garbage can
By the way howās the all lives matter movement working ?
Hello @awolfnamedfox. My nameās Leahāa name that comes from the Bible, a book that you homophobes like to pretend says Iām going to Hellāand as a fellow writer, comic book fan, andĀ ārealistā I would like to take a moment and try to enlighten your pea-sized brain so that @gigacross andĀ @atomic-poison-ivy donāt lose all hope in the world.
Ahem. *pulls up PowerPoint*
To understand why youāre wrong, we must start at the very beginning.
Pamela Lillian Isley was born and raised in Seattle, Washington as an only child with two rich and emotionally distant parents who ignored and neglected her throughout her childhood. After graduating from high school, Pamela decided to study advanced botanical biochemistryāwith is smart person speak forĀ āplant scienceāāunder Dr. Jason Woodrue. Woodrue, seeing how shy and naĆÆve young Pamela was, seduced her and performed numerous experiments on her body, turning her part plant. She almost died more than once and was driven mentally insane, as most people would from being fucking experimented on by their professor. Woodrue flees, Pamela tracks him down, and murders him, making him her first kill and transforming her into Poison Ivy, manipulative man hater and sexy mother of nature.
Harleyās backstory is somewhat similar, although the outcome is much different. Born Harleen Frances Quinzel, HarleyāsĀ childhood differs from series to series, but is always troubled and itās clear that Harley didnāt grow up in a particularly stable environment. Despite this, she was a promising gymnast and moved from her hometown of Brooklyn, New York (hence the accent) to Gotham to study at Gotham University under a gymnastics scholarship. While there, Harley enrolled in the prestigious psychology department, dreaming of becoming aĀ āpop psychologist,ā especially interested in the minds of criminals. When her grades began to slipĀ she slept with her professor and graduated top of her class, working her way into an internship at Arkham Asylum. While there, she became fascinated with the Joker. He seduced her, she broke him out, took on the persona of Harley Quinn, and the rest is history.
Now that you know as much about Harley and Ivy as you thought you did before, letās get started on their friendship. It starts differently in different stories, but they are always best friends and Harley often runs to Ivy when things are going poorly with the Joker. Ivy provides the love, attention, and sometimes even sex that Harley canāt get out of her abusive relationship.
So even when they were sleeping together, Ivy still respected and took care of Harley, making sure she was being treated well and often threatening to kill the Joker because she hated seeing the only person she cared about constantly being treated like absolute shit.
Sure, sometimes Harley and Ivy would argue or Ivy would get mad at Harley for letting a man control her, but every friendshipāand couple!āhasĀ itās quarrels and situations where Ivy actually abused Harley are not considered canon.
Now, to address possibly the shittiest part of your ignorant argument, LGBTQ+ PEOPLE ARE NOT OVER REPRESENTED IN POP CULTURE. WE ARE HARDLY EVER REPRESENTED AT ALL AND HOMOPHOBIC PEOPLE LIKE YOU ARE THE CAUSE OF THIS. YOU DONāT REALIZE HOW MANY OF US THERE ARE AND HOW WEāRE JUST LIKE YOU AND DESERVE TO ALSO BE TREATED AS HUMAN BEINGS. SO GET OFF YOUR HIGH HORSE AND ZIP IT BECAUSE WHAT MAKES BOMBSHELLS SO UNIQUE IS THAT THERE ARE ENOUGH FEMALE CHARACTERS THATĀ āNO ONE HAS TO BE THE LOVE INTEREST OF THE ROLE MODELā WHICH IS SOMETHING THAT THE WRITER MARGAURITE SAUVAGE IS QUOTING WITH SAYING.
As I said in my secondary response to the backlash at my further explanation of my views as a comic fan and writer, I am sorry you do not understand where I am coming from and I am sorry you see this as a personal attack. It is not. I really am a realist, and I am hardly a āhomophobeā, as would be apparent if you knew anything about my struggles with learning about my sexuality or my family and their history. Since you do not know me, I do not wish to give out details of my personal life or that of my family members. I know you will not trust me when I say that I do not hate of fear the lgbt community, but I would rather address the misunderstanding of my personality. I donāt know if it would help you to understand where I am coming from at all, or if you would bother to look something up to try to understand someone you are this upset with. But I prefer to attempt. I have the INTP personality type, which is why I react the way I do to things. I donāt have much in the way of an emotional filter when viewed by others because my emotional responses are very low and controlled. Itās not something I can do much to help, unfortunately, because I have a very hard time wrapping my brain around the concept of getting as upset as people do about the things they get upset about. Keep in mind, I am not talking down to you. I would much rather be able to understand and have those reactions to be able to understand rather than being outside. I am a DC Comics fan, specifically, and so I do know these backstories already. You did not need to attempt to educate me in this, as a massive love for research is also in my INTP resume. All of this started because I was merely interested in a different way the storyline could go, and I would appreciate respecting the fact that I, as a human being, am allowed to have this opinion, especially because it comes from person experience and observation and rigorous study on the subject matter. Being that this will likely not make any impact on you in any way other than to further excite your emotions, I do not wish to push this further. I can not fully understand the emotional response my opinion on a fictional storyline has gotten, and it seems many can not understand my personality or lack of applause at what I think could be a better and more interesting storyline. Again, as I had stated before, I do appreciate the feedback because it gives me hope that maybe someday I will be able to more fully, if not completely, understand the emotional responses of other people. However, I would prefer them without vulgarity Ā and disrespect, but I understand that this is part of the emotional response and that the way of thinking to treat oneās opponent in a debate with respect and dignity is a rare one, through no fault of the people who do not hold those standards, but because of the society and possibly family they were raised in. As always, I wish you the best, and I hope you all get to learn about these various responses as I would like to! Farewell!
@awolfnamedfox
Iāve given myself a good few hours to fully read this text wall and Iām making this a new post for various reasons; including the fact the original post is not mine, I donāt want to create a giant thread on the OPās post who has been very sweet to me and doesnāt deserve to have this in their notifications, and the fact your text wall is just horrible to read for anyone with attention problems. Ā Iām going to combat various points that you made from the eyes of a real andĀ ārealistā gay person.
First, itās very obvious youāre not sorry. Ā This is a whole text wall explaining your harmful position of speaking down on a canon relationship between two mentally ill women in a comic (where villians include the literal symbol for chaos and a man mutated with crocodile DNA so I donāt think thereās much reason to dabble in realism here). Ā You think that rewriting characters to be gay or bi is the same as making a character straight. Ā Itās not because social acceptance of gay characters is rising and so many writers want to write gay characters into stories. Ā Also, established characters arenāt really āestablishedā as new canons are written and introduced. Ā Harley Quinn wasnāt an established character until Ā Batman: The Animated Series. Ā Are you going to say, by this logic, that writing Harley into Jokerās story ruins his (loosely) established story?
My point is, each canon has itās own story line and doesnāt HAVE to adhere to a specific set of events.
Onto this quote:
This statement will likely also upset you, but I challenge you to turn that anger into something constructive rather than lashing out at a stranger on the internet because, as you stated, you know nothing about me.
This statement will likely also upset you, but learn when to shut up. Ā Iām a dysphoric, gay kid who has to deal with constant invalidation of my sexuality, relationship, gender identity, and association with others in the lgbt community by my family and strangers constantly. Ā Many people like me have to deal with this on a daily basis. Ā Many non white members of the lgbt deal with worse beradment and harassment and youāre going to have the audacity to say representation of lgbt characters is over saturated and too positive. Ā I can call you a piss stain for shitting on mentally ill women for pursuing a relationship because comments like that make me angry and theyāre constantly used against people who experience same gender attraction to beat them down.
Calling happy gay couples aĀ āfalse positive representationā for gay people is fucking insulting. Ā Itās the equivalent of telling people they canāt read a character as autistic because itĀ āgives autistic people too much hope.ā Ā Gay and trans characters arenāt your sob story. Ā Our lives statistically deal with a lot of shit but representing us as nothing but these sob stories does nothing to help lgbt youth or anyone understand the life that people live outside of the fear we have to deal with. Ā You, as someone obviously not lgbt, know nothing about the lives myself and others live. Ā If you were truly empathetic toward this ordeal you wouldnāt be hiding your homophobia behind veiledĀ ārealism.ā
Good job, Batwoman, Ivy, and Harley are all some form of gay (regardless of it theyāre a lesbian, bi, or pan). Ā Give yourself a fucking medal for seeing one character as gay. Ā Too bad now theyāre all gay and Ivy and Harley are being written as in a relationship regardless of how youĀ āas a writerā feel.
Also, digging the passive aggressive jabs at then end because I gave you 3 sentences telling you that your opinion was shitty and harmful. Ā Anyway, your input is shitty and harmful and packed with a shit ton of homophobic and ableist logic and i donāt have to tolerate it as aĀ āfellow human being.ā
Iām terribly sorry you canāt understand my tone, but I will respectfully decline to further explain myself as, with this website, I sort of uphold aĀ āone and doneā policy when it comes to explaining my point of view as to avoid unnecessary arguments. I do wish you to know I was not being passive-aggressive, and that my tone over text is often misunderstood and taken that way, or as plain sarcasm, and i was worried my original response would come across that way. As I said previously, however, I can do nothing to change your perception of myself. I would like to think that I could, but I canāt. I am not homophobic, I am not a hateful person, and Iām sorry that this is difficult for me to communicate through writing. I have struggled with my sexuality in the past in various forms, so I can understand your difficulty and emotional response, but I do not think we can make progress from here, so I bid you good day and a lovely holiday season. what she says: avatar is one of my favorite shows.
what she means: avatar: the last airbender is one of the best shows i have ever seen. words cannot describe how much this show means to me. every single one of the characters were diverse, three-dimensional, and well-written, with arcs and character development that were all beautifully orchestrated. the characters were all so human, with flaws, and ambitions, and compelling back stories and motivations. it even shows how the antagonists weren't evil and heartless monsters, but how they were just as human as the heroes. the stories the show itself followed were just as beautiful, mixing humor and playfulness with important, hard-hitting life lessons that have shaped me as a person. the show stressed the importance of friendships and familial bonds, and how everyone is not only deserving of redemption, but can achieve it. it showed the strength in kindness and humility and forgiveness, and how you aren't defined by your past. it showed that just because you're related by blood to someone doesn't mean they're your family, and how friends can be your family too. the show even depicted how animals can be like family. it showed how unhealthy relationships and abuse work, and it showed how you can move and work past those things. it taught how to deal with grief and pain, and how those things can help you grow as a person. it showed that even if everyone is telling you something is right, it doesn't mean it is, and that you should stand up for what's truly right. the visuals were absolutely stunning, and the soundtrack is the best soundtrack of any show or movie i've ever heard. the stories and the characters of this show have resonated with me deeply, and are still affecting me today. to me, nothing will ever compare to avatar: the last airbender.

Can we talk about how the Deadpool movie, which the media has largely referred to (in so many words) as a fuckboyās wetdream, not only gives a female sex worker an empathetic role, but treats her and her work more respectfully than about 99% of so called feminist media?
.
At no point does the movie imply that Vanessa is tainted because she is a sex worker. At no point does the movie imply that Vanessa is unworthy of love because she is a sex worker.
At no point is Vanessa portrayed asĀ ābroken.ā
At no point does the movie imply that being a sex worker makes Vanessa a bad girlfriend. At no point does Deadpool ask or expect Vanessa to sacrifice her job for their relationship.
At no point is Vanessa slut-shamed for her job, by either protagonists or villains.Ā
Think about that.
Denigrating sex workers is so taboo within the Deadpool movieverse that even the villains wonāt do it.
We know that Vanessa experienced sexual abuse, and that itās shaped the person sheās become and influenced the choices sheās made. The movie clearly acknowledges that sexual abuse is real, and that it is damaging, and that people who experience sexual abuse struggle to lead ānormalā lives and get ānormalā jobs.
But the movie never hands sexual abusers the mic.
There is no sexual abuse porn in this movie. There are no voyeuristic rape flashbacks. There are no misogynist monologues. The audience learns about Vanessaās abusive past from Vanessa, on Vanessaās terms, through Vanessaās own words.
This seems like the bare minimum of dignity any female character should be granted, yet so much media fails to meet this extremely low bar.
The movie makes it very clear that Vanessa has a life outside of sex work. She does not live on a stripper pole.Ā Sex work is something Vanessa does. Sex work is not who Vanessa is. She has an apartment. She wears pajamas. What other fictional universe can say the same? I can think of one tv show, but thatās about it, and that showās viewership is nothing compared to Deadpoolās.
Now on the one hand, Iām not necessarily happy that Vanessaās character arc revolves almost entirely around her romantic relationship with the lead male protagonist. But on the other hand, I find it very refreshing to see a sex worker in the media whose character arc does not revolve entirely around the fact that she is a sex worker. Hate to say it, but for sex workers in the media, being relegated to the role of love interest is actually a step up.
Most feminist media would rather pretend sex workers donāt exist than write storylines of any kind for them.Ā
This.
And the people who call Deadpool a fuckboyās wet dream sure as heck didnāt watch the same movie I did.
The movie has:
A very funny moment in which the joke is on those who assume that sex workers have abusive pasts, not on the sex worker. (The comparing abuse thing gets ridiculous enough that theyāre both clearly lying).
The male lead repeatedly posed in female come-on positions. This one is my favorite:
Heās even on a bearskin rug in front of a fire. The humor in this pose isĀ āHaha, isnāt it silly to pose a character like that.ā Itās designed explicitly to make people think about how commonly female characters are shown in these kinds of ridiculous poses. Going to tell me thatās not a feminist visual joke?
An under-age female character who is never sexualized. Yeah, this girl
Look at that. A practical costume, her breasts are minimized rather than emphasized. We only see Negasonic Teenage Warhead as badass, notĀ ācute.ā And sheās treated like a teenager, not a child or an adult.
Oh, and Deadpool doesnāt rescue Vanessa in the end. He throws her a weapon so she can rescue herself. Which she does, because sheās badass.
Iād actually call Deadpool a feminist movie, and an important one. Why?
Because they probably tricked an entire bunch of fuckboys into watching a feminist movie ;).
So, why was it so feminist?
Two words: Ryan and Reynolds.
Ryan Reynolds wanted to do this movie. He wanted to do this movie for years. Reynolds is basically a Deadpool cosplayer who managed to convince a movie studio to pay him a lot of money to be a Deadpool cosplayer.
Guess what Ryan Reynolds also is?
A feminist. He says heās going to push for even more badass ladies in the sequel. (I think weāre going to see Vanessa with superpowers. They had her long enough to expose her to the agent, if not to activate it).
Iād love to see Vanessa with superpowers, and I enjoyed the hell out of Deadpool.
I forgot one, and an important one.
When we are shown the strip club Vanessa works at, it is not filmed the way movies always film strip clubs.
Itās filmed as if we were going to an office. Itās justĀ āthis is where Vanessa happens to work.ā No low shot angles to show off womenās bodies, no soft porn music.
Just veryā¦matter of fact.
Can we also bring up that Deadpool does NOT shame Negasonicās name choice? It screams OC but heās still supportive of it.
Of course heās not gonna shame it, itās the best fucking thing heās ever heard in his life and heās pissed at himself that he didnāt think of it first.
... wow. I'm just.... I think this speaks for itself. I don't really need to provide any narrative other than possibly that I would not consider their relationship romantic, but purely physical and sexual. Actually that was pretty much the plot. He got ugly, and had to run all over to try to get his face fixed so he could go back to having sex all the time with her because he thought she wouldn't like him because of his face. Which is probably due to the entirely physical nature of their relationship. That and she brags about being abused. Which is all but healthy. So. Sure. Encourage all this in women. That will end well.

The next time one of the homeless asks you for a dollar and you have that internal thought that, āOf course I canāt give them money; theyāll use it towards alcohol or drugs.ā Give them the money. Give them the money to show yourself Jesus rather than to show them. While itās true that they might take the money youāve given them towards destructive ends, the beauty of that exchange is that it shows us ourselves. God loves giving you gifts. He loves when you are pleased with them, and it hurts Him when you donāt use them well. But even when you take His gifts and you make of them golden idols to worship, He continues to give them to you because He believes in you and He believes you have the capacity to accept them well. He believes it strongly enough to trust you with His possessions, and so to should we believe in each other to trust people with what is ours even if they might use it towards harm. So the next time someone asks if you can spare a dollar, realize that God is inviting you to see Him more clearly by seeing yourself in that person.

You guys giving gift cards is a great way to ensure they use it for food or something they can benefit from. Even gift cards you may win or something.
(via because-helives)
I would always do gift cards, buy them a meal or somethi ng to drink, of give care packs (socks, sandwiches, soap, toothpaste, toothbrush, comb, water bottles, poncho, those heating things for your hands, gloves, etc.) I am actually planning on making care packs this holiday season (when I have the money, unfortunately... I wish we had more to give) and giving them out to people who I see struggling. I want to include gift cards for food if I can, but if not I will just do what I can. I'm gonna keep them in my car. I see a lot of panhandling where I live. It saddens me, and I want to do my part to help. I want to do whatever I can.
