An Intact 1,700-Year-Old Roman Sarcophagus Discovered in Hungary
A team of archaeologists has uncovered a remarkably intact Roman sarcophagus in northern Budapest, Hungary, offering new insights into burial practices and social life in what was once a major Roman settlement nearly 1,700 years ago.
The discovery was made during a large-scale excavation in Ăbuda, a district that formed part of ancient Aquincum, a Roman-era town situated along the Danube River.
The stone coffin, sealed for centuries and left untouched by looters, held the skeleton of a young woman along with dozens of preserved grave goods. According to the Budapest History Museum, metal clamps and molten lead had secured the lid in place, keeping the contents protected since antiquity.
Researchers also uncovered a Roman aqueduct and eight simpler graves nearby, but none matched the condition or richness of this particular find.
Inside the coffin, archaeologists found a complete skeleton surrounded by personal and ceremonial objects. These included two glass vessels in perfect condition, bronze figurines, 140 coins, a bone hairpin, amber jewelry and fragments of fabric woven with gold thread.
She noted that the burial appeared to have been carried out with great care, suggesting the woman was dearly loved.
A unique Roman sarcophagus discovery in Hungary
Gergely KostyĂĄl, a Roman-period specialist and co-leader of the excavation, said the sarcophagus and its contents suggest the deceased belonged to a wealthy or high-status family.
He emphasized the rarity of such finds, noting that by the fourth century it was common for Roman sarcophagi to be reused. In this case, the coffin was crafted specifically for the woman and remained sealed until its discovery.
Anthropologists are now studying the remains to determine more about the womanâs age, health and origins. The discovery, one of the most complete Roman sarcophagi ever found in Hungary, offers a rare and personal glimpse into the past.
