OCism is also killing good writings. Because writers are creating characters first before having themes and goals. That's why your story sucked.

You have a character sheet and all sorts of details but you can't write a plot to save your life. Your pacing is dogshit.

Not really one for online discourse but I’m startled by how much of the anger on this website is plain defensiveness. People see a broad critique, they realize the subject matches their own behavior, they pick that critique apart or find any excuse to delegitimize it without engaging with the usually very clear point.

All the point was: “OC” culture often builds characters with wide scope but no depth. A collection of details is favored over intentionally woven threads. Thus their stories suffer from shallowness.

I don’t even agree fully with the original critique, I don’t think there’s one facet of a story— character/theme/goal— that needs to “come first,” I think any one of those can be born out of another, but maybe I’m being pedantic too. Still, have any of you been in a language class? Had your work critiqued? Do you take everything personally all the time? Exhausting.

prophet oc named hayah who is purposefully ignoring her “gift of sight” powers…she lives in a tall tower in the middle of the sea with a population of 10 thousand other people, all of which have been lead to believe the sea water is dangerous and deforms you, theres a caste system inside the tower and a lot of religious stuff im working on, the twin rulers of the tower at the very top are imposters and their bloodline has been faking the “gift of sight” for generations and manipulating the religion and their citizens in their favor for racial reasons…..there are also bioengineered bird people surveilling the tower and doing the upper castes bidding, have more plot but these r the only drawings i somewhat like so ill be brief out of respect………
