fun fact about character development by the way. you can make them develop worse.
like I mean this very seriously as writing advice. the character should experience events and make decisions that make them different at the end of the story. they should be changed. they do not have to be improved.
they can get worse. they can make decisions of an increasingly terrible nature. they can stop taking risks on kindness. they can discover how much they can get away with. they can find religion, or abandon it, with negative effects on their moral creed. the character has to develop. the character does not have to grow.

imagine randomly stumbling across Palouse Falls State Park in the middle of bugfuck nowhere single-lane highway and fields in every direction. it could happen to you. it happened to me.
I refuse to believe that Fallout is this misanthropic story about how human nature is fundamentally violent and will never escape that when the Master, the series' first antagonist, is literally a cautionary tale about what happens if you take such a belief to heart.
If Fallout is saying anything about human nature it's that even in our worst moments we can always choose love and justice over cruelty and exploitation. Even if human nature is fundamentally violent, we have the power and strength to act in spite of our nature and fight for good things. You could even say that war never changes but people do. Perhaps even through the roads they walk.
I think that part of what irks me about AI being used even for "small" stuff like meme graphics (aside from all the larger problems obviously) is like.... the time spent on it was part of the humor. "this is a silly inconsequential joke but I had to stop everything and spend 5 minutes making it" was, at least for me, part of the joke. Someone really took time out of their day to make me look at something silly they took time out of their day to make. Now it's like someone took time out of my day to make me look at something no one even made. Stop wasting my time if you aren't wasting yours too.
wyll baldursgate ravengard is like. the writers very obviously half-assed it, but it would've taken SO little effort to just go with:
"this guy shed his previous identity in a traumatic burst of violence at the tender age of 17 to save his city, and in the process has welded his entire sense of self to the Heroic Idealsā¢ļø he grew up with. he is charismatic and superficially whimsical, but underneath it, he's in a objectively very bleak situation of having no family or home, 0 prospects aside from dying young in a monster fight and/or getting another offer he can't refuse from mizora, and getting his soul put into a torment nexus forever. he's kind of accepted this bc he places no value on his life outside of Doing Good Deedsā¢ļø . he has built an impenetrable 18 charisma facade around himself to hide any fear or anger or negative feelings. but, he stays silly :)"
and then quite obviously, you can either encourage wyll to remain on his heroic martyrdom complex (similar to how you can encourage gale to literally explode) or you can get wyll to remember that he is also a person that deserves to live and occasionally do things for his own benefit (the opposite of astarion, perhaps). and this would be extremely sweet, and is exactly what the voice actor was trying to infuse into the performance! it just. never got satisfyingly brought together. AASHJDGSHH. gnashing my teeth eternally.
