As writers, we all have a sadist sharpening its knives within us. Here are some ways to make your characters' lives miserable, sympathetic, and *storyworthy*.

A character grew up in a sinister orphanage and narrowly escaped its dark, dark secrets.

A soldier witnessed unspeakable horrors on the battlehied, leaving deep emotional scars.

A reformed criminal who once led a life of violence, but is now trying to make amends.

A character was abducted at a young age and endured years of captivity before escaping

A character was betraye by a close family member, leading to a life filed with distrust and pain.

A character managed to break free from a dangerous cult, but is haunted by their past involvements in cruel rituals.

A person accidentally caused harm to someone in the past and has been losing sleep over guilt ever since.

A character battles a severe addiction that nearly destroyed their life before seeking help.

A friend turned out to be a traitor, leading to significant emotional trauma and a distrust for humanity (which we writers have even without a traitor of a friend?)

How to avoid character inconsistency in your writing

Set your character boundaries:

What's the background?

What's your character's backstory?

What are their traits, and how do they portray them?

Know what keeps your characters motivated. (Are they reaching their goal?)

You can avoid quick shifting of scenes. Let your readers absorb the setting of the scene.

Ensure that their actions and decisions align with their development and growth.

Tip 1: Start your chapter with a scene or dialogue that comes back at the end, which helps maintain consistency.

Tip 2: Throughout the chapter avoid the fast pacing of the story, rather let the characters express themselves so that it's clear for the readers.

Consider how your characters react to situations that are hard to convey. (Do they feel nervous? Scared? Fearless?)

Dialogue writing is crucial in explaining your character's personality while writing a story.

This process requires lots of re-reading and writing, fixing character holes and rewriting character arcs.

A can’t fall asleep without the tv on, but B can only sleep in total darkness, so A makes sure B has a sleep mask any time they stay the night

B makes A a small, discrete item to fidget with when they’re nervous

B keeps an eye out for collectibles that A wants and lets A know where to find them

Knowing A will be in a terribly boring work meeting, B sends A several memes to keep it entertaining

A and C are best friends and B makes sure C is involved in plans too (they don’t want to make C feel left out or like B is taking A away from them)

A reassures B that they don’t have to stay at the party if they don’t want to, the people there will be happy to see them whenever

A brings out a glass of water and a bigger hat for B, who decided the hottest day in the year was the right time to do yard work

B uses their dogs as an excuse to get A out of their house (“Arty is pouting because you’re not here… not for any other reason involving food.”)

B remembers a game that A wanted and buys it for them on their birthday (“I mentioned it once, like four months ago! How on earth did you remember that?”)

A secretly plans a fully customized gift for B with all of B’s friends

A sets a day and time every week to hang out with B, whether it be online or in person

A and B compete to genuinely compliment as many people as they can in a day (including each other)
