“Come to me, all you who are weary and burdened, and I will give you rest. Take my yoke upon you and learn from me, for I am gentle and humble in heart, and you will find rest for your souls." - Matthew 11:28-29 (NIV) These words from Jesus in the Gospel of Matthew are always so comforting..... In the literal sense of the word, a yoke is a heavy wooden harness that fits over the shoulders of an ox or oxen. It is attached to a piece of equipment the oxen are to pull. Obviously these were used way back then but we as people, carry our own additional weight in the form of "burdens." Things like sin, or the excessive demands of religious leaders (later in Matthew 23:4, or in Acts 15:10 you can see these references) or oppression, persecution, even weariness in the search of God. Jesus frees us from all these burdens; these are all the things (and the list goes on) that He carried and were nailed to the cross. The rest that He promises is love, healing, and peace with God, not the end of all physical labor. However, having a relationship with God changes meaningless, wearisome work into spiritual productivity and purpose. So he gives us "rest" in the sense that we don't worry about wasting time in our lives doing things that aren't fulfilling or fruitful but instead through Christ we have purpose and plenty of things to do that ultimately bring Glory to His name! In turn giving "rest" to our souls because we know who He is and what He has done to save us and give us this purpose. Peace in knowing the work we do for the kingdom matters so much more than anything else gives our soul rest as well. Thankful for His mercy, grace, and sacrifice especially in this reminder today.
