I’m opening emergency commissions because my mother has cancer and we could use some extra money for bills, gas, and groceries. She’s been out of work for 6 months and despite the best efforts of her managers, if she ever goes back to work she will be demoted from assistant manager to entry level. We are also isolated since we live on a military installation. So I have been her primary caregiver for over 8 months because our friends can’t visit us even if we asked, we are disconnected from our emotionally constipated extended family who lives on the other side of the country, and my mom and dad are legally separated and in the middle of a divorce. We have taken the proper steps to receive whatever government assistance we needed that still exists, and I have applied to hundreds of locations and revised my resume many times with only 1 interview and rejection to show for it.
The lack of support for my family has all our lives at a stand still because of this medical life hurdle. My mother’s condition has her physical and mental health on decline as chemotherapy has been taking a toll on her body.
I would also love the opportunity to quit my job and stop betraying my morals working for the military industrial complex as a lowly glorified janitorial government worker as I have not felt safe at the workplace for over year being a member of the lgbt community. Despite the support from my managers (which is much appreciated) this is a highly political atmosphere and my fear of being beat up or harassed at work has prevented me from medically transitioning which has also taken a toll on my mental health. I took this job with the idea that it would be temporary and a place to “lift myself up by the bootstraps” so to speak, but the current president, job market, and being a full time caretaker at home has me financially held hostage here. Being able to do commissions and give myself a second source of income will help me tremendously.
