In South Korea, Top Teachers Become Multimillionaires

A nation devoted to its studies means that top tutors have large followings — and the pay to match.

But, apparently teachers in the United States are overpaid.

“This devotion to studying is credited with helping South Korea consistently rank at the top of the developed world in reading, math and science, although the latest rankings from the Organization for Economic Cooperation and Development also show that Korean students come last when asked whether they are happy at school. South Korea also has the highest suicide rate in the developed world, which many suggest is related to a high-stress focus on education.”

The requirements of a teacher’s job have become an ever-accumulating list of tasks that they are expected to complete to an ‘outstanding’ level. While the list of tasks and the expectations on them has increased, they still teach for the same amount of hours and are expected to use all their other time to complete these tasks. An average teacher is working a 60-hour week by the Department for Education’s own admission. Even if this was term-time only, it means that when averaged out, they are working 45 hours a week over 52 weeks - with no holidays. This is in the face of impossible targets where the teacher is held wholly accountable for whatever level or grade a child achieves, ignoring other factors over which they have no control.

People talk about October being their hardest month of the school year, but I taught for nine years and there wasn’t a February that I didn’t polish up my resume and send it out to see what other options there were. (Spoiler: I apparently don’t have any other marketable skills than teaching, and that was ok in the end, but that tough month was tough…).

These five lines are called a staff, and a staff operates on two axes: up and down and left to right. The up-and-down axis tells the performer the pitch of the note or what note to play, and the left-to-right axis tells the performer the rhythm of the note or when to play it.
