The confessional bars on Barth's side (now confessing not his sin but his love, after so many years without confessing); the door as a separation but most importantly as a way to the other side; Tanrak as the priest who listens but also as the sinner who's being guided by the shepherd all at the same time… Barth in the dark but in the wide room, Tanrak in the light but in the narrow hallway… Tanrak opening the door out of his own will, not because Barth forced it open... Barth being the one to cross the line again... Them both standing in the light as they finally kiss, instead of on the dark side, glowing...

That last scene is so fucking good and could be analysed in so many ways for so many different things, I'm almost crying at how marvelous it is.

I need someone to write a tumblr thesis about TTH’s visual treatment of the bodies at the end of episode 3, cuz it never feels like we’re invited to ogle them despite how naked they are (and these being two of the biggest actors in the BL industry). The lighting’s not used to give them dehydrated abs. We don’t scan them. They’re not posed for optimal body-built angles. We’re inside the moment with them, feeling the vulnerability and sexual tension that exists on an emotional rather than entirely visual level. It’s a deeply erotic scene but using such different tools (the droplets on the skin, the silence, the flickering lights, the risk of exposure) than we’re used to seeing to get us hot and bothered.

The thing that drives me crazy this ep is that Barth knows. He knows. But he can't trust what he knows. Is he seeing something that isn't there, just because he wants it to be? If it is there, is Tanrak aware of it? Would he admit it? Would he act on it? How would he respond to Barth acting on it? Is Tanrak a safe person to know his secret? Is he keeping a secret of his own? He's testing Tanrak the entire ep, trying to confirm what he already knows, and more besides. He's touching him every chance he gets. He's constantly seeking him out. He's looking for reassurance every time he talks to him. Tanrak are you mad at me? Tanrak are we friends? Tanrak please talk to me. Tanrak you can tell me anything. Until he finally says the words: Tanrak I like you. Tanrak's quiet gay panic and his seething, miserable jealousy might be the headline of this ep, but Barth's persistence is the consistent background hum.

the thing is, stephen king is generally pretty good at creating complex, well-rounded characters, which makes it all the more jarring when one of those characters abruptly comes out with what i'll term a "kingism". i don't know how best to define a kingism other than "you'll know it when you see it". it's the voice of the author intruding on the voice of the character, and in this case the voice of the author has a bad sense of humour and is ravenously, inexplicably horny
