if ever you are writing child characters i entreat you to allow them to be 1) intelligent 2) assholes 3) intelligent about being assholes. you might think "theyre too young for calculated menace!" and so, i raise you an anecdote wherein me and a friend i played horses with at recess (normal 7 year old girl behavior) were talking and she told me she lived on a farm with 60 horses. now. i was immediately suspicious. 6 i would have let slide. 60 was a bald-faced lie that i clocked immediately. i was pissed that she lied to me and i was pissed she thought i would believe it. i did not call her out on it. instead i waited for a classmate's birthday and once her parent arrived to pick her up, i ran up to them and put on my best earnest voice and asked, "do you really have 60 horses?!" and they turned around and bit her head off. i didn't have the word for it at the time but the emotion i felt was vindication. it was unequivocally an asshole move though. im not saying children are manipulators i'm saying maybe that 11 year old protagonist has a higher capacity for vengefulness than a toddler. you know? and that's how i approach writing tim drake.
