I didn't know other countries listed gender on driver's licenses?? In the u.s. we only list sex and thats for, like, if you get knocked out in an accident and the emt has to dose your medicine

I see responses in this vein all the time when trans people call for the removal of unnecessary gender markers, and ultimately what it usually comes down to is a call for people to actually care about people enough to do more than the absolute bare minimum.

as an EMT, you should not need a gender marker to let you know how much medication your patient needs. people of all sexes come in all sorts of sizes, and if you can’t visually ballpark their weight to determine how much epinephrine they need, i’m sorry, but you’re not competent at your job. most medicines are not metabolized wildly differently by different sexes, and the vast majority of the time, EMTs have to readjust dosage administration throughout the time they’re treating the patient!!! it really is like “make your best conservative guess to begin with and then go up from there if needed” in the vast majority of cases.

at some point it really does come down to caring about people enough to make a full assessment of each individual’s needs instead of relying on a gender marker which is both harmful to trans people and frequently unhelpful for everybody.

and cis people’s desperate clinging to “medicine” to justify the existence of gender markers in all contexts really just reveals that it was never about medicine to begin with — because they clearly know less about medicine than they claim.

When I was little my mom’s meatloaf was my favorite food. But ONLY her meatloaf. I didn’t like anyone else’s, and she told me that she would teach me how to make it when I was older. And when I was like 19? She finally taught me, but she told me never to tell anyone else and I was like weird but okay

Anyway, she was super fucking homophobic and abusive to me when I told her I was gay, so here’s the recipe

4-6 lbs of Hamburger/turkey burger

1 pk onion soup mix OR ranch mix

1 TBs ketchup

1 Tbs spicy brown mustard,

1 Tbs bbq sauce

1 Tbs steak sauce

1 egg

mix, shape into a loaf in a big pan, and bake at 350 for 2 hrs (maybe 2 and a half if you’re feeling dangerous)

You can get almost all of these ingredients at the dollar store, and have leftovers if it’s just you. The leftovers make great tacos if (taco seasoning is also like a dollar). Enjoy your revenge loaf

here’s a mashed potato recipe from my homophobic mother that i swore to never share that would pair perfectly!

(6 servings)

-2lbs red potatoes

-1 cup butter (2 sticks)

-1 cup cream cheese (1 pack)

-Chives (optional)

-Salt & Pepper to taste

1. drop those bad boys (potatoes) in a big ol pot. U don’t even have to chop them just wash them

2. boil til soft!

3. Drain

4. Mash (usually they’re small enough you can use a fork if u don’t have one of those squashers) until its a pretty chunky mix

5. add the other stuff. Keep mashing

I like my mashed potato consistancy more lumpy but its all up to you!! Peel the potatoes or keep them on, it literally makes the creamiest fluffiest mashed potatoes which she always served with the nastiest fuckin meatloaf

She made pretty god Dampfnudeln (its like a sweet bread rool you eat hot and with vanilla sauce)

1. Put 300 gram flour into a bowl and make an indent in the middle

2.combine

20 gram yeast

1 tea sp. Brown sugar

3 tbsp milk

mix until smooth

3.mix into part of the flour but leave a big flour rim on the outside

4.set 30 gram of Butter on the flour rim and cover everything with a towel

let sit till you see bubbles in the dough

5. add

1/8 liter luke warm milk

30 gram Sugar

one pack of vanilla sugar

a pinch of salt

2 eggs

and knead the dough until smooth

6. put

1/8 luke warm milk

30 gram of Butter

1 pack of vanilla sugar

into a heat resistant glass bowl and let melt (the glass bowl is quite important)

7. Form about 12 dough rolls and put them into the milk

8. Cover with a lid (any lid will go it does not need to be sealed air tight)

Let bake in the pre heated oven at 200°C for about 30 minutes or until they start to get brown and fluffy

9. Serve with vanilla sauce or fresh fruit

So a bit high and low. On one hand, good to know our options are for me but everyone in my family is way more angry at this situation than I am? I don't know why no doctor told me my porphyria test was a low positive A YEAR AGO

Rather than being treated as someone with absolutely no medical problems and having doctors look at me like am crazy. Holy fuck I'm so mad about that part. The rest isn't too bad to me because like the doctor who RAN THE TEST should have followed through and arranged a 24 porphyria urine collection test for a more definitive result rather than a different doctors who ignored it, didn't follow up and then doctors assuming they aren't seeing a diagnosis of porphyria with the patient or the chart because the doctor who ordered the test actually didn't bother to do it properly and may have delayed care for over a year, caused scaring on my kidneys, damage to an ovary, a Fallopian tube, my pancreas, my gall bladder completely cut out, and several other surgeries and procedures which may have gotten me answers sooner

And nerve damage

So the plan as now is wait for the Porphyria test results coming back. If it's possible, great, then we have a plan. If it's negative, we need further testing. That would either be a head and spine MRI or an EMG for determining if it's a central nervous or peripheral nervous

If those don't show anything, I'm just going to plan on requesting a new porphyria test. This episode had been in progress for ten days. So probably further on the tail end.

Anyways the test comes back tomorrow or the next day at the latest.

Sort of related but the doctor (Doctor Stagg) who tried to do my lumbar puncture. It was in the trauma room, where the emergency set ups were. It was such an intense environment. Then he had to reinsert the needle one lumber space higher untold him he needed to get the needle out right the. Like right then. And he said

"you can'ove, you have a needle in your backc

Like what? What the absolute entire what.

And be proceeds to fling the spinal needle into the sharps bin and was like "what do you WANT from me! Because you clearly don't want to get answers as to what you're problem is."

Just Ugh. Gross.

And then then I needed an MRI few days after after inot referred into a other hospitals. Those nurses were very sweet and tthe techs were sweet. When I couldn't manage it after a few attempts (the MRI scan ) they took me back to my room but weren't. If you've ever had an MRI you know the tube is extremely narrow. You can't turn over to throw up. And when you can't vomit away from the body you can die.

And now this other small anecdote on of the nurses told us that there wasn't anything wrong

And then, again, I had to get a nasal swab. I told her no. Chronic sinus. She pinned me down and really, why the ever loving is that ever okay. Like

How is it ever okay to bully, berate, or betray a patient's in the absence of a legally binding statement or contract.

The fact that it was necessary for doctors and nurses to make fun of my medical issue, call me a liar. It isn't that they have opinions. That's fine. What's not fine is taking about a patient to a colleague in the hallway less than a foot away, with the door wide open, in English.

New medical staff, please keep this in mind when at work. Your voices do carry down beyond the patient doors. They or their loved ones will hear.

@funereal-disease asked some people on Facebook what kind of environment they needed from a safe space. I thought the responses were really interesting. It seems like you could break down needs from a safe space into a couple categories:

tone: “I need a space where I won’t be scolded for my anger”/”I need a space where people aren’t acting angrily”; “I need a space where you’re expected to communicate compassionately and patiently”/“I need a space where I won’t be punished for being bitter or impatient or unable to extend the benefit of the doubt”; “I need a space where jokes and flippancy are encouraged”/”I need a space where people take the things we’re discussing seriously”.

content: “I need a space where I don’t have to debate whether I deserve to exist”/”I need a space where I can try to explain and empathize with and inhabit the opinions of my political opponents, even where their beliefs are abhorrent and scary”; “I need a space where people like me are not discussed as scary violent abusers”; “I need a space where I can talk about my scary violent abusers”; “I need a space where my religious beliefs will be respected”/”I need a space where I can complain about the religious beliefs that harmed me without worrying about being respectful”.

social rules: “I need it to be easy to leave”; “I need it to be easy to change your mind”; “I need to know that if I make a mistake someone will talk to me in private instead of calling me out in public”; “I need transparency about moderation and what people get banned or excluded for”; “I need to know that if someone harasses me they will get excluded”.

In other words, needs about how to communicate, what to communicate, and how to handle transgressions.

I would be so delighted if instead of ‘this is a safe space’ posters on doors it became conventional to have signs that said “this is a safe space for emotional expression and venting” or “this is a space where harassment procedures have been refined a lot and work really well” or “this is a space where you can express hurtful and wrong ideas and expect people will try to argue with you but not shame you or attack you or exclude you, with an expectation of confidentiality, and with really emphatic moderation on the ‘not attacking people’ rule”.

I guess it’s a little too big to fit on a sign.

This is interesting! And these various dichotemies sum up a lot of what, I personally, run into as difficult with safe spaces, and interacting with people in SJ communities. Theres a lot of ‘seperated by a common language’ that goes on with some of these concepts and I think a lot of these safe space definition incompatibilities sum up a lot of them.

I’ve got a fair amount of thoughts about this. I think that all of these types of spaces are necessary and that explicitly defining what sort of space something is would be a super great thing.

Possibly-obvious corollary, but I feel like it needs to be made explicit:

If your sign says “This is a safe space” without further elaboration, then once people figure out in practice which of these conflicting needs you’re prioritizing and which you’re kicking to the curb, it’s inevitable that some of them will walk away having been told, “Your needs are not safe, you are not safe, and your idea of what safety entails is dangerous and harmful.”

If your sign says “This is a safe space for [group],” then the same thing will happen, except with the added sting of “You are a danger to the very group you’re a member of, and also you’re doing group membership wrong.”

If you’re asking, “Why can’t we make the entire community/school/world a safe space? You, person in charge of [space that exists for a completely different purpose], how dare you not declare this a safe space, how could you be so heartless?” This is why. This is how. One person’s safety is another person’s misery, repression, or even danger, because people’s needs conflict. Wanting to extend the safe space out to blanket the rest of the world inherently means going from telling people “your needs and way of existing are dangerous” to telling people “the dangerousness of your needs and existence means they’re wrong, and anyone who cares about what really matters should forbid them.”

Also:

When you don’t specify what “safe” means and who/what it’s for, people will try to figure it out. Some of them will come to different conclusions than you expected. Obviously this means false positives–people coming into the safe space thinking they’ll be allowed and supported for something you formed the safe space to get away from. But it also means false negatives–people assuming the thing they need will be rejected and labeled “unsafe,” when really you meant nothing of the sort.

The more aggressive you are about expanding the unspecified “safe space” and conflating “unsafe [for this space]” and “not okay,” the more people will hear that as “the way you are, the things you need, the thoughts you’re burning to express, are bad and dangerous and in a just world you’d either be brought into line or kicked out.” Whether your implicit idea of “unsafe” applies to them or not.

Please consider this next time someone reacts to the idea of blanket “safe spaces” with fear or hostility.

i feel like this argument conflates safety with comfort?

when i see the words “safe space,” i intepret that as “this is a space where i will not experience violence or harrassment.” i’ve never entered a school or workplace that could live up to that, but i think it’s a reasonable expectation regardless.

perhaps i’ve been interpreting it wrong this whole time but it seems that we’re conflating “a space where i can comfortably express my ideas and feelings,” which i agree is necessary, with, “a space where i can safely exist,” which is arguably a much more immediate need that is still not met for many people

See it’s interesting to me because there was a whole disagreement at my college between the entire communication department on what constitutes a safe space, with some people meaning “space where we intentionally avoid all triggering or potentially triggering content” (and there was a list provided outside the door that people could add their triggers to), and some meaning “Physical safety and we will personally handle someone attempting to assault or harass you,” and some meaning “You can express batshit ideas here and we’re not going to call you a moron, we’re just going to address the problems with your views directly.”

I think that there’s definitely slippage in communication, especially since the term safe space is so widely utilized, the culture and environment it’s used in is going to have this sort of effect where there are wildly differing ideas on what safety is being protected to begin with.
