A character trait/dynamic that I'm endlessly compelled by is someone dealing with (or, like, failing to) being the child of people who were too busy being good people to have the time and attention to be good parents. This can be anywhere from 'was a public defender who gave a shit working 60 hour weeks with basically no vacations' to 'left their family behind to join the revolution/war effort and is now a universally beloved martyr-hero who saved/remade the world with their final breath' on the groundedness spectrum. The important thing is a viscerally felt but confused and ugly mess of longing, resentment, and guilt about feeling the resentment.

interesting article in Playboy, of all places, on a collection of practices called thermal male contraception that involves elevating the temperature of the testes to lower viable sperm count.

posting this paragraph in particular because it wasn't something I'd thought about before; I've seen a lot of posts and stuff over the years arguing that research on long acting reversible contraception for men is stalled because research participants (and presumably eventual consumers) will not tolerate the range of side effects considered acceptable for female contraception methods, but it hadn't occurred to me that there are ethical regulatory hurdles here too.

Last year, I befriended a Catholic seminarian. We've gotten to be pretty decent friends. Seeing as he was staying in town for the summer and I wasn't, I entrusted him with caring for my plant.

He did a wonderful job, but as he was returning my plant to my custody, he explained "I watered her every other day, I gave her new dirt, moved her into the sunshine, prayed the rosary-"

"What?"

He looked at me, confused. "Isn't she a plant you pray with?"

"No," I said slowly. "She's a prayer plant. That's the... colloquial name of the plant."

Upon seeing his stricken face, I realized something went wrong. Turns out, this entire time, he's been including my plant in on his prayers and leaving her near icons.

Listen, totally cool. My plant becoming Catholic is a great deal for her not dying over the summer. But now I must navigate this interfaith household. Keep me in your thoughts.

There is definitely a phenomena where people try SO hard to avoid anthropomorphism they end up looping around into this quasi-religious stance that humans have some essential non-biological quality that sets us apart from other animals. Like being so cautious about how you describe emotion experienced by a nonhuman animal that you go "that animal is not 'happy' it's just demonstrating a response to positive stimuli and receiving chemical reward signals" as if that's not also what human emotion is at the fundamental level.

My response is USA-centric because that’s is what I have knowledge in. That being said, yes, I believe feral horses cause damage and should be removed, however, more importantly, they’re suffering and that’s why they should be removed. Those are feral, not wild, animals, that demand human resources (like time and money) to keep alive. So not only are they damaging the ecosystem (boooooo) but also we’re helping many of the populations do so because of a fabricated, misguided, and romanticized imagination of the Wild West. I am so sick and tired of “animal rights” activists getting in the way of feral horse management because what’s best for these horses is actually not perpetuating cycles of us having to stock public lands with hay for a mediocre and uncomfortable life.

I am curious to hear more from folks who voted “yes I believe they cause damage but think they should not be removed.” I’m actually not that gung-ho about adhering to the moralized perception of “native” and “non-native” or “invasive” species, however these feral horse populations are by no means naturalized into their environments, so it makes little sense to support their presence.
