Ok some of my absolute faves include:
Little Kitty in the Big City: Like goose game but you're a cat trying to get home
Donut County: Like hole.io but with plot & an adorable soundtrack
Airborne Kingdom: You build a floating city & travel to different places
Terra Nil: Using strategy, you have to revitalize four different bioregions
Dave the Diver: You own a sushi restaurant & have to dive into the ocean to get ingredients
Dredge: You are a fisherman in haunted waters
Let's Build a Zoo: You have to build a zoo - I prefer this on PC or at least with a monitor
Hollowknight: One of my favorite platformers, You are a bug exploring ancient ruins.
Honorable Mentions: The Binding of Isaac & 20 minutes till dawn (both twin-stick shooters), Graveyard Keeper & Spirittea (both farming/management sims), Slay the Spire & Cultist Simulator (both "card" based games), Minami Lane, Cult of the Lamb, and of course, Spiritfarer

It's a rough world out there for people who were teenagers during the exact slice of gaming history where indie video games had become feasible to develop and distribute globally, but the definition of "indie" didn't yet encompass corporate studios and million-dollar budgets. They'll tell you their favourite game when they were a kid was, like, a point-and-click visual novel whose protagonist dreams they're a vast formless sea monster that learns about the concept of colours after finding a discarded helium balloon, or a hypertext fiction/precision platformer hybrid exploring gender as a mechanism of social control, and you think they're either being pretentious or deliberately fucking with you, but no, that's just what the indie gaming scene was like for a couple of years there. The sea monster thing got a front-page feature on the same site that made Bloons Tower Defense a household name – it was literally played by millions of people.

Favorite Game This Week: Terra Nil
If you haven't played this game yet, please try out Terra Nil! It is a gorgeous game about rehabilitating the earth after a catastrophic event. You places machines to heal the environment, clean waterways, reintroduce wildlife, and at the end recycle all your materials and fly on to the next (procedurally generated) map. I played this game over the course of about three days, but there are different difficulties and you unlock alternative challenges for different areas. This game was so healing and cute, while also being a fun challenge. It's almost like a city-builder in reverse. 10/10 would recommend
