Carole posting because I love her dearly and I’m in the mood for top gun posting again,
I really hope to see less of Carole being portrayed as a one dimensional character, because in a lot of spaces I’ve seen she’s either completely ignored, killed off early in Bradley’s life to support icemav being Bradley’s potential figures, or she’s just gooses bubbly widow that can only ever be either bubbly and fun loving or depressed in the wake of her husband’s death.
I’ve always been a big fan of souther Carole, as someone from the south myself, I like to portray her as such, come to the dark side yall, y’all are missing out on prime southern woman Carole guys.
Like y’all are severely missing out on Carole giving Bradley the “mom in the church face” and the hushed “sit your ass down 😐😀😁” in public when he acts up as a child. Like she’s giving Dolly Parton in the BEST way. Please tell me y’all know that scene

Like let her be angry!!! Let her be a single mother struggling to take care of her child. Let her be a MOTHER to her own son instead of killing her off early in Bradley’s life because you want to have icemav be his parents
There’s nothing wrong with icemav but there is a very big problem with blatantly disregarding Carole and her importance to Bradley’s life because you want icemav to be his parental figures and now Carole is out the window forget her!!! and it doesn’t effect Bradley at all.
For a fandom full of queer people there is so much blatant interrnalized and down low misogyny in this fandom and it genuinely drives me up the wall, and the biggest problem is I don’t think people realize their doing it or they just don’t see it as a problem.
And it’s not even just with Carole, it affects the other women in the movies too.
Charlie gets so much flak for her relationship with Maverick because some people act like she’s this evil manipulative “bitch” and that maverick is totally innocent and she genuinely gets so much hate while Maverick ends up absolved of any wrong doing whatsoever when he is also a grown ass man in their relationship.
Phoenix gets this treatment too, the fandom praises the movies for Phoenix being an independent woman in a male dominated field such as aviation, which is great, but then in fanfics she gets treated like the “mom friend” who is constantly dealing with hangman and roosters bullshit, she’s doing the heavy emotional lifting for two grown ass man and doing damage control for their problems, she ends up babysitting these two grown ass men and reeling rooster in because “she’s the logical one who always has to give advice or relationship advice or constantly look out for rooster because she’s his “best friend” and everyone else is incompetent and can’t make simple decisions on their own without her help or her stepping in. And gets used as a plot piece to move a narrative along because Bradley and hangman can’t do it themselves apparently so she’s needed to do it for them.
And who even is halo am I right? Because she got maybe five minutes of scenes in the movie, she has like maybe a few fanfics that include her or maybe a sparse headcanons post but she is also treated is ultimately replaceable if she even gets acknowledged
Back to Carole though because I’ve already spoken enough about how women in the top gun fandom get treated in posts before and I’m beating a dead horse,
Let Carole be angry!! Let her be resentful!! Let her not be the perfect mother, let her try her hardest and still struggle.
I’m a huuuuge fan of Carole being resentful about gooses death.
I’m gonna say something highly controversial here, because yes gooses death was an accident, neither ice or Mav wanted that or imagined it happening but what lead up to gooses death WAS preventable. If maverick and ice had stopped their peacocking for who was better and if Mav had chilled his rocker for like two seconds to think rationally and logically, if they’d have both put their egos down for one second gooses death could have been prevented.
Two things can be true at once, it was an accident that was not foreseen, and it also was a slow build up of maverick and iceman’s competitive peacocking that lead up to it. And if it wasn’t goose maverick probably would’ve gotten himself killed instead.
Grief is not pretty, it’s not linear, it’s not fair, Carole can absolutely be resentful of ice and mav because of gooses death, even if she forgives maverick. Grief is not as simple as “I know it was an accident I forgive you”, her husband and Bradley’s father is still dead. Carole does not have to instantly forgive maverick, she’s allowed to grieve, she’s allowed to grieve UGLY, she’s allowed that resentment and all the awful heartbreaking emotions that come with grief because it’s not as simple as acknowledging it was an accident and moving on. She doesn’t have to be Buddy Buddy with iceman, she doesnt have to be involved with the flyboys at all following gooses death. If I was mother and all of my dead husbands friends who all do the same thing he died doing started showing up to my house, hanging around my son who by exposure gets exposed to their work and shit I’d be fucking livid, Carole is not at all in the wrong for not wanting Bradley to be a pilot, why are we blaming Carole for MAVERICKS DECISION to mess with Bradley’s career?? Carole didn’t do that, Maverick made that decision on his own for his own anxiety and worries, he can claim all day he was upholding Carole’s promise for her but it is ultimately his decision and HIS worries that influence that action too, so why is Carole the bad guy??
Why does Carole have to be forced into big flyboy family tropes when that’s probably rubbing salt in the wound that her husband is dead from a freak accident and everyone else gets to live??
And if we are going to write them in situations together why don’t we show how being around maverick and the others in the early years after gooses death might effect Carole, because it’s not gonna be sunshine and rainbows, speaking from experience, a bit of tmi and trigger warning, but I have lost a friend in a car accident where my other friend was driving, the driver survived and my other friend didn’t, and I’ve only just recently in the past few years began talking to him, that happened six years ago, I love my friend that was driving and I didn’t at all blame him for it because I understood that it was an accident and things just happened but I still couldn’t stomach being around him for more than an hour because it made me so sick to my stomach, and it brought all of those feelings and anguish right back up to the surface like it had just happened again. Grief is not as simple as, oh it was an accident, I’m now going to spend the rest of my life around you even though it’s a constant reminder of what I and my son lost and not be effected by it at all.
Let her be a grieving, struggling mother, let her have HER FAMILY help with Bradley, Carole probably has family too?? Why is her family ignored for the sake of the bug flyboy family trope? Let her not know what to do, with Bradley and herself, let her make bad decisions, but don’t draw it out to the point where all she is and all she will ever be is a grieving widow. Let her be a mother to her child, let her have hobbies and friends and family outside of the fucking main cast of the first movie, what about gooses family?? His parents, if he has siblings in your story what about them? Carole’s family? Like why do we ignore these things and isolate her to only the flyboys.
And why do we not make her have any impact on Bradley’s life whatsoever, the movie is also the biggest fault of this because she gets killed off screen and mentioned ONCE. And it’s in relation to MAVERICK. Not on her own, Bradley doesn’t mention her, it’s in a scene about MAVERICK and MAVERICKS ISSUES.
Like I love goose as much as anyone else but why do we act like gooses death inherently effects Bradley more than the death of his MOM, Bradley was two fucking years old or however the fuck old he is in the first movie, he barley even knew goose to begin with, why do we as a fandom focus so much on goose and how the loss of goose effected Bradley when he doesn’t even realistically remember him, and not the mother that raised him??
I’m sorry y’all the way Carole gets treated pisses me off so bad y’all.
I don’t hate icemav but I do hate it when people completely disregard bradleys own mother and her important to his life for the sake of that ship,
Most of this is the movies fault because she literally only ever is shown as a bubbly fun loving wife and then a grieving widow and then she never gets talked about again but the fandom also perpetuates this portrayal too.
