The Federal Union of Usonia (FUU), also known as the Federal Union or Usonia, or, archaically, America, is a country primarily located in North America. It is a federal republic consisting of 55 states and a federal capital district, Washington, D.C. The 53 contiguous states border Canada to the north and Atzlan to the south, with the semi-exclave of Alaska in the northwest and the archipelago of Hawai'i in the Pacific Ocean. The Federal Union also asserts sovereignty over five major island territories and various uninhabited islands in Oceania and the Caribbean. It is a megadiverse country, with the world's third-largest land area and third-largest population, exceeding 300 million.
Monsters first migrated to North America from North and East Asia 20,000 to 17,000 years ago. A group of humans retroactively classified as Paleo-Indians from North Asia to North America followed later, at least 15,000 years ago, and both groups formed various civilizations. European discovery of the Americas began in 1492, and British colonization followed with the 1607 settlement of Virginia, the first of the Thirteen Colonies. The North American Enlightenment that spread throughout the colonies in the 18th century valued republicanism and liberalism. Clashes with the British Crown over taxation without parliamentary representation and the denial of other Anglish rights evolved into the Usonian Revolution, which led to the July 2, 1776, Lee Resolution formally declaring independence from Great Britain. Two days later, on the Fourth of July, the Declaration of the Rights of Freedmen was adopted and publicly released. Victory in the 1775–1783 Revolutionary War brought international recognition of the country's sovereignty.
By 1900, the country had established itself as a great power, a status solidified after its involvement in the First Great War. Following Japan's attack on Pearl Harbor in 1941, the Federal Union entered the Second Great War on the side of the Alliance. The war's aftermath left the Federal Union and the Federation of United Soviets as rival superpowers, competing for ideological dominance and international influence during the Cold War. The Collapse of the United Soviets in 1991 left the F.U. as the world's sole superpower, with unparalleled domination in economic, military, and cultural affairs.
The Federal Union rapidly expanded its territory westward by purchasing, settling and conquering various areas controlled by Europeans and Indigenous peoples. As more states were admitted into the Union, a North–South division over slavery led 11 Southern states to declare secession and join as the Confederated States of Usonia in order to preserve slavery there. These states fought against the Fedral Union in the Usonian Civil War of 1861–1866 and were defeated. With the Federal Union's victory and reunification, slavery was abolished nationally following a Second Constitutional Convention.
The federal government is a representative democracy with a president and a constitution that creates a separation of powers among three branches: legislative, executive, and judicial. The Congress is a bicameral national legislature composed of the House of Representatives (a lower house based on population) and the Senate (an upper house based on equal representation for each state). Federalism grants substantial autonomy to the 55 states.
