There’s another cough. It’s louder this time, and deeper still, and Geralt turns his head, trying to peer into the rubble. He opens his mouth, but Jaskier’s name sticks in his throat, his tongue still coated with dust. Grit crunches between his molars as he swallows. 

“J’sk’r?” 

He hears the shifting of rocks, and the scratch of silk against craggy stone. It’s quickly followed by a mumbled groan of pain. The noise is weak, but so oddly close that Geralt flinches at the sound. Without thinking, he stretches his hand out, the sleeve of his tunic scraping along the floor until his fingertips brush against warm flesh. 

“Jaskier?” he tries again, more urgently.

He steps back, dragging the man with him as he heads for the door. The thief trips, caught off-guard by the quick pivot, and Flint’s forearm snakes around his throat, cutting off his ability to speak as he hauls the other man out of the cabin. Their trek down the corridor goes no smoother, however, as Flint soon finds himself bodily dragging the thief when the shorter man stumbles, unable to keep up with Flint’s hurried pace.

By the time they reach the deck, Flint’s headache has only worsened. Though the sun sits low on the horizon, fading but persistently bright, the sudden flare of light causes him to close his eyes a moment as he steps outside. When he opens them again, he blinks rapidly, trying to banish the dark spots in his vision as he drags the man toward the helm. The man staggers again, and it takes all of Flint’s strength just to keep them both upright.

At the edge of the deck, a group of men stand working, their conversation slowly fading as they turn to stare.

“S-sir?”

A young blond man steps forward, his eyes flitting between Flint and his captive.

Flint doesn’t recognize the man, but he can’t be more than sixteen. A boy, really. He knows he’s been preoccupied of late, of course, and investing the time to learn every new recruit’s name had never been a priority, at least until they’d proven their worth to him. It doesn’t bother Flint, not knowing the boy before him. What does bother him, however, are the four other men standing behind the boy.

Each one just as unfamiliar as the next.

Super excited to share my part of this year’s SFBB! I had a blast making this and I hope y’all enjoy Bee’s great fic!

Flint stands and slips quietly toward the bureau, freeing a dagger from his belt. The wide bottom cupboard holds a stack of ledgers belonging to the Man O’ War’s previous captain. He’s been meaning to go through them, once he’s had a free hour to spare, but it appears the rats have gotten there first, eager for new nesting material. He bends, the well-worn leather of his boots creaking as he raises the dagger. He pulls open the door quickly, hoping to catch the creature off-guard.

Not a rat, Flint realizes in genuine surprise as a tiny pair of bare feet skitter away from the opening. There’s a loud thump as the youngster inside the bureau strikes against the wooden backing, nowhere left to go.

“Hell-ooo,” Flint drawls, his head tilting as he stares into the cupboard.

He watches the boy, and the boy watches him. Neither move.

I still feel like I haven’t thanked enough for this fic, I haven’t said enough how much I love it, how much I admire it. 

It’s definitely one of the best fics I’ve ever read, so beautiful, most touching, heartbreaking, the gentlest, the sweetes fic ever.

The rope has some give, his forearms sliding against the smooth timber, but it’s not enough to slip his bindings. That doesn’t stop him from trying, of course.

After all, the man watching him seems to be enjoying Flint’s struggle.
