I am not sure how the english subtitles are translating 姐夫 (jiefu), but I did see @renewedmotionforjudgment mention that it is not being translated well!

"Jiefu" is made up of two parts, "jie"" (姐) meaning "elder sister", and "fu"(夫) which can mean "husband" or "man" depending on context, but in this case (and in most cases), it means "husband". So together, "jiefu" means "sister's husband", as opposed to the western way of denoting this relationship as "brother-in-law", which does not specify if the sibling of the speaker is older or younger, or male or female. Chinese culture is not the only culture with such specific titles attributed to familial relationships on a family tree, but compared to the way it is used in English, it is very specific, and the way it is used is different. "Jiefu" is not a passing description, like "oh X? that's my brother-in-law". It is akin to a name, how a person, as the younger sibling, would call out to the husband of their older sister, every time.

This is why Changning is always calling Xie Zheng "jiefu", just like how she calls Changyu "a-jie". For Changning to call Xie Zheng by his name would be insane and pretty much unthinkable.

It really drives the point home that Chang yu and Xie Zheng are married. If you heard someone call another person "jiefu", that gives you a lot of information - who the speaker is relative to that person, the fact that the speaker has an elder sibling who is female, the fact that such sibling is married to the person they are calling "jiefu" etc - even if it is called out in the most casual, unassuming way.

Important!! Yes absolutely agree!! Changning calling Xie Zheng jiefu also shows her acceptance and approval of Xie Zheng. She accepts and approves that he is a part of her family, as the husband of her beloved sister. We can see it in the way she so confidently and frequently calls out to him like that.

ning niang has just been pampered by her jiefu and her gongsun gege the whole time at this military encampment 🥹 Update: I see the Eng subs have translated this differently, as "it was better when a-jie slept with jiefu" buuuut from the context of this scene, I see it as ning niang sighing and lamenting that she herself was better off sleeping with jiefu. Grammatically, this sentence lacks a subject so it doesn't specify specifically who ,but contextually it seems more natural for ning-niang to be speaking of herself. If she wanted to mean she was better off when her a-jie was sleeping with jiefu, it would make more sense for her to specify as such. people on the iqiyi bullet comments also seem to think ning-niang means that ning-niang herself was better off back when she was sleeping with jiefu:

there was also a comment about jiefu not wrapping the blanket away from ning-niang but I lost it. Hmm.

Overall, contextually I think there is ambiguity but the majority consensus right now is that ning-niang did sleep with xie zheng at some point. People are discussing the fact that Gongsun Yin was her primary carer once they hit the encampment, but people say that before they arrived at camp, ning-niang was with xie zheng while they were on the road.

chinese language learners ! so someone ik works on this language exchange platform tokimonki (for chinese / english language exchange) and word rn is there has been an influx of chinese native speakers who want to learn english, but this means an imbalance and there are not enough english speakers who are trying to learn mandarin chinese - so pspsps apparently now is a good time to join for chinese learners, there is like a free trial or smth, if you are looking for this type of method to practice spoken chinese. the platform has pre-prepped materials to help you avoid awkward convos, but there is sorta a pre-req requirement that you need to have a certain intermediate-ish level of chinese first to do exchange seshs. anyway just putting it out there since ik a lot of language exchange usually has too many english first language speakers and not the other way around , hope this reaches the right people
