How would canon go if Edward never existed

Canon wouldn't go, the canon storyline is completely dependent on Edward.

Alright, to be a little more serious, let's break this down.

In 1918, Chicago, Elizabeth Masen has no son whose life she can plead for, as a result, Carlisle does not turn Edward. As he never turns Edward, he likely never truly considers creating his own coven and turning others (though coming across Rosalie in the aftermath of his assault might convince him to do it, in which case we get a timeline similar to this.)

More likely, Carlisle remains a single doctor by at least 2005. His cover is of a much younger man, there's no convoluted cover story involving adoption of eerily similar looking children who also look nothing like him or each other.

In time, he will likely return to Volterra. Given the rise of facial recognition/the internet, he'll likely hit this point by 2010-2020 when he can no longer practice as a doctor in human society.

Bella is hit by a van in the parking lot and tragically dies very young.

Personally, I think Esme would have been his first creation. Followed by Rosalie - he wouldn’t have created her for Edward, but maybe for Esme - hoping to give her the daughter she never had. Rosalie being who she is, can understand Carlisle’s thinking and agrees with it - her bond with Esme being quite strong as a result. She empathises with Esme.

Rosalie would still have rescued Emmett. Alice and Jasper would have found them.

And Alice would have still had visions of Bella - her friendship and love for Bella was created before Edward ever loved her. I believe Alice would have saved her from the truck.

Even if Esme, Rosalie, and Emmett were never made, Alice would still have had the vision of a different life and sought Jasper and then Carlisle. Even if it were just these three, I believe the general idea would be the same. Bella’s blood wouldn’t sing for Alice, but Alice would have tried to save her from the van.

However. There’s three ways this would have gone differently.

1. Alice would never have waited for the accident. She would have seen the crash and stopped Bella from going there. Perhaps by introducing herself or having a conversation with her - thus beginning their friendship. “The strange, beautiful Cullen girl talked to me! They never do that!” And intrigue ensues for Bella. She may also have never waited to befriend her.

2. Accident happens because Alice isn’t looking for Bella’s future and Alice saves Bella as Edward did. Bella asks questions. But Alice isn’t Edward. She doesn’t hate herself or her life. Alice either tries to keep up the charade or she doesn’t, and Bella finds out about their world. Alice - wanting her as a friend, includes her. She doesn’t resist it because she trusts her visions, and no one else really challenges it either. The baseball event happens, or something similar. Alice would turn her at the end, or ask Carlisle to. Future books would revolve around the broken treaty - with a similar result to Life and Death.

3. Accident happens and it injures Bella. She’s taken to the hospital in ICU. She’s dying. Alice argues with Carlisle that she’s seen Bella change, Carlisle changes her and issues arise with the wolf pack. The treaty is broken, and the Cullens with Bella must flee, or the ending would be similar to Life and Death.

Do you think that old people would survive a vampire transformation? Since it's so extreme, do you think that it has a certain age threshold before it just kills the infected person? If it does, what is the maximum age you'd say? Would a 90 year old survive? Would a 100 year old?

Bella gets brought back from emaciation, broken spine, exsanguination and cardiac arrest, Esme is brought back from being so dead they put her in the morgue, Rosalie sounds to me like she was hypothermic in addition to bleeding to death, Jane and Alec were burned alive, and Alice was so malnourished it stunted her growth, which isn’t good for the heart. Maggie was starving to death, also not good for the heart. Venom brought them all back.

You have to stay alive during the transformation, yes. But we see venom get Bella’s heart to beat on its own within minutes of Edward injecting her. It seems it only needs to get in your system, and from there it will forcibly keep you alive.

They even say in the book that transformation works better when the heart is weak. I don’t know why that would be true because it needs the heart to pump to spread the venom, which Jacob and then Edward do for Bella.

I believe it doesn’t matter what age a person is transformed - it will fix them.

But I also believe it will fix damage done by ageing - so that a 100 year old would become youthful looking when they were changed. It isn’t entirely canon, but if it fixed other damage why not also ageing?

Okay I'm not trying to be rude about this, but I genuinely do not understand people who want Jacob to be with Bella. I can see the appeal for Bella, because this poor guy was written to be exactly what she needed when she needed it. But honestly what does Jacob get from Bella? Good relationships are give and take, and Bella only takes from Jacob, she never gives.

no, this is definitely absolutely true! & one of the reasons even edward-aside, i don’t completely ship jacob & bella. i prefer their platonic friendship. they’re definitely shippable because when you read new moon, you read from bella’s perspective, and how can you not love jacob? he’s so sweet, so perceptive, so understanding, so consistent & patient. but when you really analyze their relationship, bella offers him absolutely nothing. and i understand she’s in a depression, so this isn’t me saying anything along the lines of if you have depression you have nothing to offer shfkkf that would knock MYSELF out of the equation lmfao. bella uses jacob. she allows him to always be there for her, even expects him to be there, and although she may feel some guilt about how she hurts him, she never actually tries to do anything to stop it. we rarely if ever see bella give jacob anything whether it be a present, an activity/plan made especially for him and not for her, etc. she says jacob’s someone she could easily be friends with but never even seeks him out until she needs him. even when she reflects on their relationship openly, acknowleding the feelings of romance, she says “i used to think of you that way, you know. like the sun. my personal sun. you balanced out the clouds nicely for me,” which is like... not even about him. it’s literally about what he did for her. and don’t get me wrong, i do like bella. but there’s really not much reason for jacob to like her because although i don’t really think of bella as self-centered... when it comes to jacob... she kind of is just a self-centered white girl. and smeyer writes jacob to think of her as this fantastic perfect holy untouchable girl. i said i don’t, but i lowkey still do kind of ship them in that like i feel the feelings there, but ultimately i’m of the opinion that jacob deserves way better.

i’m definitely curious about what fervent team jacob/bella & jacob shippers think about this!! i think the ship is still valid & sweet so i’m not asking why u ship them bc i def see why!! but even while shipping them, do y’all think jacob deserves better than bella?

Realistically if mental illness is consuming your life it -should- knock you out of the equation for beginning a new relationship!

Work on yourself and get yourself better before placing that kind of stress and expectation upon a brand new connection! It’s an awful lot to ask!

Charlie is the unsung hero of the story. He acknowledged that he felt he wasn’t adapting to having Bella there as well as he felt he should. That he lived his own life and was out on weekends a lot.

Bella was obviously fine with it by 17. She’d grown to be independent.

However I can’t help feeling that twilight was an indictment on neglectful or at least marginally absontee parenting, and how a child can cling to the first people that offer some semblance of a stable family.

Do you not think she was drawn to them as foster kids? That she could, in some ways, relate to them, because they too were disenfranchised from their biological family unit?

She was, in my mind, drawn to that found family because it was something she’d never known herself.

Idk if I’m late to the party, but is anyone else upset over the fact that she changed emmetts line on page 30? From “it would look more impressive if you did it, baby.” To “it would look more impressive if you did it, gorgeous.” Like I hate that. WHERES the LOVE. There’s just infatuation with looks & I refuse to believe that’s the bais of their relationship.

I didn't like the change either. Don't get me wrong, I think Emmett is always absolutely *gushing* over Rosalie's beauty, but it just didn't sound as... Fun? Relaxed? Emmett-y?

Then I wondered if maybe SM was trying to give the dialogue a more old-fashioned feel (like how Edward says "the pictures" instead of "movies") but... It just doesn't work with Emmett! And "Baby" paired so well with movie!Emmett's "Babe c'mon it's just a game"

Can we talk about how Bella says her old room was probably turned into a yoga studio and when Edward asked if there was a spare room she was like well yeah but that’s Renee’s sewing room. Twilight made it seem like Bella could go back home whenever she wanted and would be welcome with open arms but Midnight Sun well and truly sounds like Renee has just moved on with her life and left Bella behind and I just :/ (also did anyone get the same vibes as Harry Potter, when Dudley had TWO bedrooms and Harry was forced to sleep in a cupboard under the stairs despite having to cook, clean, and basically earn his keep despite being unwanted) no wonder the girl is so miserable in Forks. also Twilight implied that Bella never dated because no one ever asked / she’s never wanted anyone but in Midnight Sun it sounds more like Bella might have gone out once or twice but “running a house is a lot of work” and she never had time for it and eventually people just stopped asking because Bella was too busy being the adult Renee should have been. It’s so heartbreaking because when Renee left she not only took Bella with her but didn’t even give her the stable childhood she probably would have gotten if she just stayed behind in Forks, thus depriving Charlie of ever learning how to parent either. It sounded much more like Renee needed Bella more than Bella needed her meanwhile Charlie was left in the dust when those two are so so similar and probably would have had an incredibly close relationship if they were just given the chance

I feel like they should’ve reversed their living arrangements, so Bella would’ve lived with Charlie year round and just visited her mom once a year in the summer. I think that would’ve been a much healthier childhood

the part in new moon where bella fucked around and found out about the wolves was like SO wild bc she really ran up to the rez to accuse the other wolf pack boys of a bunch of shit despite being totally misinformed. and THEN, like 2 scenes later, she accused the wolves of killing people while her judgments were based on stereotypes about monsters that she never even applied to the cullens. like new moon is my fave and all but it’s moments like these when you remember bella really is a White Woman and honestly? I see exactly why a good number of y’all projected onto her!!! anyways good morning. make sure to drink water and stan leah clearwater
