I think what really drew me in to twilight when I was a teenager is that, despite the epic vampire whirlwind romance, the teenagers actually do feel like they have REAL lives, and it’s a real shame that that doesn’t translate to the movies (bc a movie with pointless scenes of the main character making enchiladas & doing homework would be crazy boring). I like that Edward enjoys skipping class to sit in his car & listen to Linkin Park CDs, I like that Bella spends her weekends doing laundry and drafting her Macbeth essay, and on sunny days she lays out a blanket to read in her backyard. I like that she drives to her best friend’s house after school to watch him fix cars and do homework together, I like that they have joint family dinners that are just eating spaghetti on fold-out chairs on the deck. I like that her friend group piles in mike’s mom’s van to go hang out at the beach, and when she brings a camera to school they all start a “picture war.” I like that she has a part-time retail job and sits at the kitchen table filling out uni applications with her boyfriend. It definitely loses that quality around eclipse when the focus has to stay on the actual plot, but I like that twilight & new moon feel pretty grounded in what introverted lower-middle class small-town teenagers are actually doing.

i don’t think we talk enough about rosalie canonically being a mechanic & a car geek, she is by far the most feminine character in the saga & is the one who strives the most to fulfill her gender role (dutiful wife, wanting to become a mother, etc) and yet she has such a quote unquote “masculine” hobby, i think that is so cool, it breaks down so so many gender stereotypes and im kinda obsessed with it

I’m back after 2 years for one little post because I’m rereading life and death and I’m at the point where Beau sees Edythe’s skin for the first time in the sun and oh my gosh it reminds me of how much I hate the sentiment of the “stupid sparkly vampire” when Stephenie literally revolutionized the classic predator!!! No longer a creepy crawly thing that hides in the shadows but a flashy, beautiful, alluring animal that lures you into its trap. If Edythe/Edward had truly been evil or a “true vampire” it would have been all too easy to get Beau/Bella and that’s why they were designed that way. A peacock or poison dart frog ready to lure its prey. It’s an entirely new take on such a classic beast and I’m sorry that the world wasn’t ready for it. God these books might just pull me back into its clutches 😭

I've always liked the sparkling too. It's such a cool element of lore considering how their skin is different from when they were human. And I really like how this "asset" actually because a dangerous hindrance for vampires who try to move in the human world.

PLUS you get to have fun in writing fic coming up with different words for it depending on who is talking:

-Emmett watching Rosalie

-Edward hating his own appearance

-Rosalie hating her own appearance

-Edward reconsidering the sparkle when he first sees it on Bella

-an effervescent newborn thinks they are literally on fire

-a werewolf seeing a vampire (want to see this in fan art so much)--it literally looks different to them and hurts their eyes

The only problem is that it was named something that makes it sound campy and silly.

The older I get, the more annoyed I am by Bella going on and on and on and on and on about how getting older seems like absolute fucking hell to her and there's nothing worse than not being 17 forever, and in general the way every single vampire is described to be forever young and baby faced essentially because EWWW wrinkles, EWWW imperfection, EWWW being old, like the whole saga is an ode to ageism

this is why reading the series as an adult is so sad. we're now on the other side looking back at Bella's teenage "getting old is scary" mentality KNOWING how much better life has gotten just because we've grown & changed & overcome. being "frozen forever" means she'll never be able to truly discover the person she wants to be & will always lack the self-awareness to understand what her life is missing.

if Twilight were portrayed as the horror story it truly was, it would be clear that Bella staying childlike forever actually sucks. because getting older is a privilege & a gift. because change is beautiful, & stagnation is heartbreaking. because there is no greater way to love someone than to grow with them.

to be arrested forever at an age where you stamp out signs of growth for the preservation of your youth is a subtle sort of nightmare lurking behind a happily ever after that one rarely understands when they are on the cusp of adulthood.

Surely, if you got a pet as a baby, they’d grow up to be used to vampires. SURELY. Emmett and Rose have a pack of dogs that they absolutely spoil and cherish.

what she means: in the final installment of the twilight saga, the twilight saga: breaking dawn - part 2 (2012), how was alice cullen able to have a vision of renesmee cullen and jacob black in the future? ?? the entire conflict concerning bella, edward, and alice in the second half of the twilight saga: new moon (2009) was that alice saw bella jump off a cliff but didnt see jacob save her because he’s a werewolf, so edward assumed bella was dead. ??? ?and then in the twilight saga: breaking dawn - part 1 (2011) alice didnt see bellas future after bella got pregnant on her honeymoon because renesmee is a vampire-human hybrid. ?????? according to the logic in the book alice shouldnt be able to have visions of species other than vampire and human because shes only been a vampire and a human.? and then all of a sudden in the final chapter of the twilight saga alice can see jacob AND renesmee 10+ years into the future????????i havent slept since november 2012
