āWill gymnastics and other sports cancel 2021 world championship events to accommodate the Olympics being moved? https://t.co/im6Wt1KBf3ā
Scott Russell from CBC sports says 2021 world champs of major sports will most likely be cancelled but i have no idea if it's 100% legit info. I hope not š
Part of me hopes they don't cancel but I can see why they might. Anyone who went to the Olympics would be exhausted and just want the competition season to be over, it's too soon to go to Worlds. The whole competition field would just be new seniors and gymnasts who missed qualifying to the Olympics.
So basically what every post Olympic worlds is like anyway...? If skating can do it so can gym; it's ridiculous to deny first year seniors a major championship that was already scheduled just because of something entirely out of their control; and it's not like the Olympics has been the end of every gymnast's season in the past (several still go to eg. World Cup final, Gander memorial, Swiss Cup, etc.). Yeah Olympians who choose to also attend Worlds might water down but like... so what? so the fuck what? It's still gymnastics and I'll still enjoy watching it. Plus teams like US, Russia, China, UK, I could go on who have more great gymnasts than they know what to do with by this point and will be leaving some really excellent competitors home from the Olympics would at least have a decent consolation prize to offer their next four.
Like, don't get me wrong, the gymnasts who will eventually win the Olympic medals are GREAT, I LOVE watching them, and I'm more excited about the variety of talent that will likely be on display at this Games than I've been for a gymnastics competition in literal decades. But the Olympic medalists aren't the be-all-end-all of the sport. I'm very much looking forward to seeing next year's big senior debuts and I'd love to see the gymnasts who would be alternates still get a chance to perform and shine that year. And on another note - teams and individuals now have to qualify to mid-quad and year-before Worlds from the continental championships, so for many teams 2021 Worlds would be their athletes' only actual opportunity to compete in a major FIG competition for the entire 2024 quad. For the FIG to look at the opportunities keeping 2021 Worlds poses and just go "nah, cancel it" would feel like highway robbery.
This low-key summarizes as "Simone isn't the only athlete in the sport and people shouldn't act like she is" but yk... whatever lol
Ummmmmm is Chellsie gonna make a Tokyo run like FOR REAL???????

Livvy Dunneās original skill on beam!
Wouldn't this count as a switch half to scale? Like with Nastia's skill?
It would in elite, but she dropped back to level 10, so she was submitting this into the JO code, which counts it as one skill.
Can't she get this named after her in NCAA instead? Or is she not doing NCAA?
the problem is that now the new seniors are going to be training to peak three years earlier than planned. like iām very afraid kzb is going to break sydney barros
Honestly. I totally understand why people want new seniors to be allowed to compete but it's surprising so few people are considering the unintended consequences. Like if you can recognize how hard it's going to be on the current seniors to maintain all their skills for one more year I'm not sure how hardly anyone is considering how terrible it's gonna be to try to hyper accelerate the training of new seniors. It's also going to make the next quad that much shorter and harder for anyone to make it to a second olympics.
But wouldnāt they have been training to peak for worlds which wouldnāt have been that far away from when the Olympics will be? Also if they are letting 2005ās compete, I think they need to let more than 98 compete. If they want the playing field to be level, there needs to be some actual legitimate possibilities for the 2004ās and 2005 to qualify spots, especially for teams who didnāt place top 12 at 2019 worlds. If they were pretending it was the 2020 Olympics then Iād think otherwise, but if they are making this the 2021 olympics then itās totally unfair to them.
They should up it from 98 to 150, have 12 spots up for grabs for the 12 teams already qualified, then have 40 individual spots that anyone from a non top 12 team can attempt to earn at a qualification meet (8 VT spots, 8 UB spots, 8 BB spots, 8 FX spots, 8 AA spots), max. 3pc. The original system was always ridiculously unfair to the 2004 babies anyway because with qualification for individual spots starting in 2018, the effectively gave anyone born in 2002 or earlier a massive head start on spots that would be ridiculously competitive anyway.
They're not going to up the number of competitors. That's not even an FIG decision I believe, the IOC sets the number of spots allotted for each sport Plus more athletes would mean Tokyo would need to build more living facilities.
There is a difference between peaking for an individual worlds post olympics which is usually a lot less competitive with a lot of people retiring taking post olympics break and peaking for an olympic games imo. Hopefully coaches will be smart but I'm still slightly concerned knowing how bat shit some of these people are.
There's a ton of injuries leading up to a regular games as is I don't want this next year to become a bloodbath because of the weird circumstances.
I'm already worried enough about gymnasts getting injured because they rush back into things after they had to take an unplanned month or two off due to quarantine, without the added factor of trying to upgrade to skills they aren't ready for.
Yeah, the IOC allots spots to sports federations who then decide how to divvy them up between the disciplines they have at the Games. So any spots added to WAG would have to be taken away from MAG, rhythmic, or trampoline, and it doesn't work that way.
Gymnastics has petitioned the IOC for a bigger allotment multiple times in the past and mostly been denied. The few times they did succeed were used to introduce rhythmic and trampoline. It's really kinda stupid because gymnastics is designated by the IOC as a Tier I sport - one of their biggest viewership and revenue draws, the other two are athletics and aquatics - but their allotment of athletes per medal event is comically low, lower than a lot of sports which are in danger of being cut, while athletics is allowed literally over a thousand participants at every Games. If gymnastics' ratio of athletes to medal event were comparable to athletics and aquatics they would be able to invite more athletes to the Olympics than perform at a typical World Championships. IOC could scrape them up an extra hundred spots to split amonst their disciplines and I'm kinda angry they keep refusing.
As for the peaking: under normal circumstances, 2021 Worlds would ideally be the peak of a new senior's season. 2024 Olympics would be the peak of their career. Think about Simone for example - she had a strong outing in 2013 and did a great job, but 2016 Simone blew her out of the water. The ideal picture is a sinusoid curve but with an upward slope - every annual peak is a little higher than the last, but so is every valley - you stay fitter and train harder upgrades during off season. Turning that gradual, layer-by-layer process of building up an athlete into a rush to pack on 3 years' worth of difficulty in, if we're lucky, 13 months, is asking for injury. Especially as many of these athletes will have been out of the gym so long they will probably need to relearn how to kip. So yeah, FIG do one (1) thing right challenge: failed (again).
Hernandez did not tell her mother details about Haneyās conduct until 2016, weeks after she competed in the Rio Olympics, and she did so then only because her mother had overheard her in a FaceTime conversation with a former teammate about Haneyās pulling that gymnastās hair.
The two teenagers were laughing about it, and Wanda Hernandez, a social worker, stopped them to say: āIām sorry, but what are you saying? No one should be touching you or grabbing you.ā
After her daughter, then 16, told her everything, Wanda Hernandez immediately called Haney to terminate her services and sent a complaint to U.S.A. Gymnastics. She said she eventually had to demand that Haney stay away from Laurie because Haney kept making contact.
From there, Wanda Hernandez kept pressing for more oversight in the sport. In 2018, she spoke with Morinari Watanabe, the president of the international gymnastics federation, at a meet in Chicago and discussed the need to teach gymnasts that they should feel safe speaking up about abuse.
Laurie Hernandez won medals at the 2016 Games. But she said her love of the sport was tainted under training with Maggie Haney, who is now s
A real recurring theme in all these awful stories is the sidelining/exclusion of parents. For every parent who turned a blind eye to the horrible stuff going on, thereās a parent like Wanda Hernandez, who seems to be an appropriately concerned parent who acted when she was aware of issues, but was kept away from the gym and prevented from seeing anything ugly. Going forward I think everyone needs to recognizeĀ āno parents allowedā as a real red flag. Gyms, training camps, competitions... none of them can stay the closed off hideaways that so many of them have been thus far.Ā
āThere were so many posts here and throughout the gymternet ridiculing Laurieās comeback. Now we know what was really going on. I hope this will teach people not to be so quick to judge in the future. These gymnasts are people and all you see is their competitions. You have no idea what is going on behind the scenes. So next time someone struggles, please be more compassionate.ā

letās also remembers that whole ass heart attack we all collectively had when we saw 6.3 flash on the panel right before she unveiled her amanar out of nowhere and won a gold medal on vault at the same damn competition lmao
God remember her crossing herself before chucking this? She really trusted god to keep her ACLs intact and it miraculously worked out for her.
you guys are acting like she didnāt have the first ankle surgery for the injury for which she would eventually retire just a month after this lol⦠so like good on her ACLs to stay in one piece but she forgot to check the fine print - re: other body parts - when crossing herself
Like Afan literally has her priority twisted. An amanar at Universiade? Freaking vault at euros 2016 even tho olympics is on the line and Russia is desperate on floor?
ikr? throwing that amanar only to miss worlds in 2013 and 2014 due to her ankle injury, competing 2 vaults in Bern because even though she was too injured to do beam/floor, and then having to get a FIFTH ankle surgery and missing Rio. l LOVE her but sheās literally my problematic fave.
I get the willies just thinking about the pressure the Chinese team was under in TF in 2008ā¦like defending silver medalists with a tangible shot at gold at a home Olympicsā¦.difficult and risky routinesā¦ā¦ā¦ā¦.Iām physically uncomfortableĀ
And that theyād be the first for their country š° even with qualifying first, it seems so hard to do that with all eyes on them.. They must have been so relieved, they basically did the best they could and their only fall was from the veteran š©
