My Origin Story
I've wanted to be an artist all my life. It wasn't until high school that I decided that I would be a comic book artist--ever since I read my first manga, Magic Knight Rayearth. I fell in love with not only the art style, but the fact that the quiet person in the class was the one to have the heroic adventure.
I felt seen.
Before manga I only knew about superhero comics. All I saw where harsh lines, muscly, broody men in tights that saved damsels in distress. And even though I still love me some good old animated Batman from the 90s I preferred more intrigue, more magic. I didn't see myself in those heroes when I wanted to be the one who fought for good and showed people a righteous path.
So from ages 13-19 I created page after page of comic starring me and my friends. We had our own powers, magical companions, and story arcs. I made entire worlds around dragons and magicians and wrote tons of lore on each one.
Then depression killed my creative spark.
My time at Shepherd University wasn't a fun romp like the movies show. It was an isolated slogfest. My roomies kept moving out cause they found better rooms or got sick, I was overworked with homework, and trying to navigate adult skills that I wasn't really ready for. All the while I was still clinging to my mind over matter strategy.
You see, I was convinced that I was "too privileged" to get depression. That mentality burned me out so thoroughly I'm still suffering the consequences.
However, all through the emotional void I had my stories. I still felt seen by them. It's funny when your imaginary characters are the ones to get through to you, but it's what happened. (And the battle between creativity and despair is a theme in my comic!)
I feel like that's why we tell stories—it's human nature.Good stories can keep us going, connect us, and show you that someone else is out there. I'm hoping Variant becomes that for you. Even in a small way.
I realized I never posted this on tumblr. the final design of my novel's front cover! I'm so proud of how it turned out. It took forever to get a painterly look on Magnus, but it turned out great. What's your first impressions? If you saw this book on the shelf what would you think it was about?

we actually need woke now more than ever
Fox News hosts called for the murder of homeless people. and they still have their jobs. meanwhile Jimmy Kimmel just got yanked off the air indefinitely for saying this
literally a homeless encampment was shot up in Minneapolis this morning. like people are listening to these conservative fuckheads and doing their bidding, but god forbid we criticize them for their actions.
The shootings come during a particularly violent summer for the Minneapolis area, including the gunning down of a lawmaker and her husband

The latest shooting happened at a homeless camp in a parking lot that has been at the center of a legal conflict between the owner of the property, Hamoudi Sabri, who opened it up to the homeless in July, and city officials who want it shut down. Sabri has refused to shut down the camp, and earlier this month, the city sued him to try to force its closure. Sabri is facing about $15,000 in citations and fines related to the encampment.
Minneapolis Mayor Jacob Frey said in a news conference in the hours after the shooting that the city will be "clearing this encampment immediately after the crime scene has been investigated."
"This is way worse that just a nuisance. This is a danger to the community," Frey said.
The city followed through Tuesday morning on Frey's promise to clear the camp, drawing a crowd of dozens of camp residents and protesters, according to the Minnesota Star Tribune. City workers were seen loading bicycles, tents and other belongings in the back of garbage trucks while several people argued with police at the scene, saying they were told they could collect their few belongings before the encampment site was cleared.
Sabri responded with a statement criticizing city leaders for their response to the recent violence, saying the city should provide grief and trauma counselors and an emergency response that would offer hotels and emergency shelter beds for the homeless and those affected by the violence.
"Instead, the Mayor's answer is the same tired move we've seen for years: displacement," Sabri said. "Bulldoze people's tents, fence off their space, and call it leadership. But it isn't leadership. It's an illusion of control designed to make the problem less visible, not less deadly."
The difference between Bex's coats during the seasons. She doesn't shed for magical reasons, but I'm debating between if she's gotta cut it or it just goes back. I might have to go with the latter cause if she just cuts it, the thickness of the fur still would have to be dealt with for summer.
Either way, her coat doesn't get super long but she develops more of a wolfish ruff.
A while ago my friend and I were thinking what our pets would be if they were in DnD. (it started with their family dog who is now my mom's dog, who would be a bard)
My foxhound mix, Halley, we decided was either a ranger or a druid. Since she doesn't actually hunt, I made her a druid! She loves animals of all kinds--nice to cats and rabbits, and loves to see foxes and deer on our walks--and she's in tune with emotions, but still pretty hardy and active.

Why is it I do my best work when I’m just noodling around?! Literally this was just an experiment! I want to get this kind of stuff on full paper instead of a corner of my sketchbooks. Do you guys think people would buy fantasy stuff like this?
Been doing a lot of traditional sketching lately. Might be because every time I go to draw digitally, I feel overwhelmed. It's like all the stuff I have to do is just laughing at me. Just going back to sketching in my sketchbook is freeing. Gets the imagination going. I can feel like I can draw "crap". What stuff do you guys go to when you feel drained or numb?
