We set foot on a celestial body that was not earth for the first time in human history! That’s a big deal! I’ve never thought about it before but now that I have, it’s ridiculous to me that that’s not part of our everyday lives and the public consciousness anymore. Why don’t we have a public holiday and a family barbecue about it. Why have I never seen the original broadcast of the moon landing? It should be all over the news every year!

This has been a common method for a long time in some states

The idea is that a Senator's sibling/spouse/parent/child knows their intentions and policies better than a political rival or a random person would. It's a pretty good way to prevent political assassinations tbh

An unelected individual getting grandfathered into a real political position due to their blood or legal relationship with a deceased elected official is not pretty good actually

It both is and is not democratic. On the one hand, yes, it puts an unelected, often unqualified person into a (temporary) position of authority based on venereal transmission of power. On the other hand, it prevents the state's governor from anointing a permanent successor to the dead politician's position.

An unrelated, qualified officeholder receives the governor's de facto endorsement in the next election in addition to an incumbency advantage in their party's primary, fundraising, and the general election.

Darline Graham Nordone has not apparently ruled out running in the next election, but she hasn't made any overt moves in that direction that I'm aware of.

If I remember correctly, the 114 days she will serve in the senate will not entitle her to congressional retirement benefits.
