My Biggest Pet-Peeve Surrounding The Hunger Games Online Fandom at Large: The Mischaracterization of Post-War Peeta Mellark.
I already know the majority of my mutuals will likely agree with everything I am about to say, but there is a serious amount of casual fans that hold true to their claims that the “old Peeta” is dead. Edits upon edits are made about this, and the amount of traction they get aggravates me greatly. Because this is NOT the case at all, and it genuinely has warped the resilient arc that Suzanne crafted for Peeta in Mockingjay.
Going from latest events in the book to earliest, these readers read about Peeta planting the primroses, saving Katniss from unaliving herself and refusing to “let her go” (not just in the physical sense in that moment, by the way), voting most passionately against a Capitol games, very plausibly having been the one to put out the fire on Katniss from the two-tiered explosion and obtaining his burns while doing so (there is a deleted scene of Josh Hutcherson doing this), hyping up Tigris for her fashion skills with his trademark, sunny disposition, clearly already indicating his capacity to long for Katniss to choose him again during the conversation with Gale while still battling his mind, knowing the exact right words to alleviate Katniss of the guilt she was feeling over every 451 squad member they had lost (which everybody else was trying and failing at), reiterating his promise that he would always stay with her, saving Katniss from the lizard mutts and having the most level head amongst the group in the most high-stress situation their squad experienced, knowing the exact right words to commend and cheer up Pollux for the asset he could be for their squad, giving Katniss the can of lamb stew on a whim WITHOUT needing to confirm with anybody that it was her favorite, begging to be unalived because he couldn’t bear another person dying by his hands, of course remembering Katniss’s favorite color before he could remember his own, scolding/arguing with HIMSELF about how he had just treated Katniss at that awkward group meal, decorating Finnick and Annie’s wedding cake with such intricacy, having an audio of Katniss singing be the first thing that didn’t make him enraged and receiving his first, true onslaught of memories through that, and SOMEHOW many readers come to the aforementioned conclusion. Peeta, who if they didn’t have a photo to put in the memory book, would sketch or paint that person from MEMORY. Peeta, who brought bread over out of a long-old habit the morning after his return to District 12, symbolizing the LIFE he will provide for her again. Peeta, who continued being this symbolic life-giver by building the life-sustaining incubator for Haymitch’s geese. Peeta, who is Katniss’s “dandelion in the spring” both at the beginning of the series and the end of it, symbolizing REBIRTH even after the harshest winter (the hijacking). Peeta, whose kind and good nature being especially showcased was always the precursor to the kisses that gave Katniss a hunger for him, and therefore her reporting on that hunger again must mean his very nature she loves so dearly returned as if no lapse had ever occurred. Peeta, who regained his innate instinct to take care of Katniss and love her with every fiber of himself. Peeta, who made Katniss feel safe enough to have children and brought her a brand new kind of joy in them. Peeta, who must make up ninety-percent of the list Katniss makes of any act of goodness she’s ever witnessed, which she uses to cope just as much as his strong arms in the night. This is the man they claim is so drastically different from the boy we first met.
Don’t get me wrong, I am in no way downplaying the canonical, long-term effects of his torture that Peeta will experience for the rest of his life (though Katniss making no mention of it in the epilogue, despite being honest about her own lingering setbacks, leads me to believe it improved drastically with time). I am simply posting this to prove that the CORE of who Peeta is returned in full. Every thing she has always loved about him came back. There is no “old Peeta” or “new Peeta,” there’s just PEETA.

Saw a good convo about Gale saving district 12 citizens from the fire bombs that got me thinking and I gotta yap about him some more. Shout out to Rachel Ramras on tiktok and youtube. I believe in my heart she’s with us here on tumblr but she has not revealed herself.
The difference between Katniss and Gale is how they treat their enemies, not their allies. Gale is a brave and capable ally! He defends HIS people. Leads them to safety, pulls them out of the flames, he goes after Prim during the bombings of 13, he goes to rescue Peeta in the Capitol. But he is very specific about who counts as being on his team and over the course of the story, especially Mockingjay, his idea of who deserves his protection gets more and more narrow.
He has no empathy for anyone from the Capitol, no forgiveness for people who forward the Capitol’s cause regardless of circumstances, and he goes so far as to write off citizens of 2 who are working in the nut. A job that was probably the main income for a whole district of impoverished people much like the coal mines in 12 which is a job GALE HIMSELF USED TO HAVE. Katniss even brings up d13’s own spies who are inside the mountain and Gale is willing to sacrifice them because he’s reached a point where the only thing that matters is destroying the enemy. His list of allies gets really short by the end.
His double bomb design is a symptom of this. Katniss finds it unacceptable. Gale has no limits for what he thinks can be done to their enemies. We know that he didn’t intentionally deploy that design against Prim, but I think it comes down to Gale dealing with the inevitable consequences of becoming so war crazed. He fails to empathize with anyone he sees as against him or find any nuance in this conflict, he pairs down his list of who he is willing to call an ally, and then he sees his own violence pointed at one of the few allies he has left. Prim, someone he has sworn to protect for so long, falls victim to something he thought would only ever be used on enemies, and he’s forced to the opposite side of his own equation and ends up losing Katniss because of it.
Katniss figured out in her first games that the soldiers in war aren’t the real source of the evil. She empathized with the tributes trying to kill her because she was trying to kill them and she knew none of them had a choice. Not even Cato became a true villain in her mind. She watched him realize how meaningless his existence was in the end. She admired Fox Face and mourned Thresh. She was able to see humanity in her enemies and recognize that Capitol citizens were only seeing what they were allowed to see. Katniss remembered who the real enemy is and Gale did not
“book accurate Katniss” and it’s just another recapitulation of the ice queen portrayal from the movies
If she’s not super funny, anxious, or worried about everyone being okay in a lowkey mom-like way, it’s not Katniss.
no “book accurate” portrayal or take I’ve seen from casual fans or the media at large has Katniss nearly as obsessed with Peeta as she absolutely must be
the mockingjay
One of the things that my mind just straight up rejects from THG canon is these supposed magic plants that can bring people out of a catatonic state. There is evidence of certain natural supplements treating mild to moderate depression, but when it comes to psychotic symptoms, there isn't a natural equivalent.
This was put in, I believe, to make it so that it wouldn't appear Katniss was leaving Prim to have to take care of a catatonic mother when she risked killing herself at various points in all three books (which is a cop-out for making Katniss decide between priorities in high-risk situations).
But to me, giving Mrs. Everdeen these magic plants that are meant to cure her catatonia (and without psychotherapy) is erasing the fact that despite all that healers who rely on natural remedies can do, there are still limitations to how much you can do without medical advancements. Limitations that Mrs. Everdeen and others in D12 who need it were not given access to because of the oppression they faced. SC does show the limits in physical medicine, but inventing these magic plants for psychiatric concerns minimizes the symptoms of severe mental illness and the complexity of these cases.
That's interesting - I never interpreted the text as magic healing plants being the reason Asterid was better. I thought it just kind of happened, over time, the plants might have been just a little aid, and her telling Katniss the reason she was so badly back then was that she didn't have her plants was just Asterid saving face/trying to reassure her daughter who was leaving. My understanding was that Asterid at some point managed to gather her pieces enough to not be in a catatonic state anymore, and then started her healing work again, which we know gives her a sense of meaning. Katniss has lots of recent experiences regarding her mother's healing (and Prim helping her). I don't think it was the miracle plants, or that Asterid is ever completely well mentally, but I saw it as a chronically depressed woman who at some point snapped out of the deepest of it and instead of trying to explain the complex factors that led to it and all her thought process to her daughter, she lets her think it was just the plants.

LOL. Well, everyone would be miserable. Listen, I am less allergic to exploring this terrible relationship dynamic in writing than a lot of people (on the way to something better, of course), but like let’s talk about WHY. A really compelling part of Everlark to me is that they both have some really warped core beliefs about their own worth and value to other people in relationships, and they ultimately heal this by choosing each other.
But where do these core beliefs come from? We talk a lot about their mothers, but Katniss’ fear of Asterid’s depression doesn’t really explain a lot of things about her senses of guilt and obligation and relationships being tit-for-tat and suspicion. You know what does? The older kid she desperately glommed onto for survival at 12 years old and looked up to because she was a literal baby and he seemed so much more mature and wise, who thinks all that shit himself and feels entitled to her simply because he’s put in the time. She’s always so anxious about his reactions because deep down she knows his reactions are not nice. He is the one who taught her that relationships are transactional.
Anyway I’m old enough to know that, for better or worse, sometimes the only way out of a bad core belief like that is through it, so sometimes I’m up for therapeutically writing about that as a stop on a journey to a happy ending where she unlearns the bad things he taught her about other people and her own worth. But Gale and Katniss will fall apart in any universe, because they don’t have similar values at all and he is absolutely responsible for many of her self-esteem issues.
I love this analysis that Gale is the person who made Katniss view relationships transactionally. It’s not much of a stretch, he’s a great option for the source of that world view.
I think often about this moment in the first arena when Katniss needs to ditch Peeta to hunt successfully. She works hard to phrase it in a way that won’t bruise his ego and she’s surprised when he’s not angry with her. WHO do we think taught her that a boys pride needs to be protected or else he’ll get upset? This is after she took off her shoes along with him so he wouldn’t think he’s the only problem when definitely he is. She never coddles him like this again, once she knows him better. She did this because she always had to do it with Gale.

KICK THE CAN!
Let’s play the biggest game of kick the can on the internet.
To kick the can, reblog it. I wanna see how long this can go on for.
the oldest reblogs for this post that i can find are from january 2nd of 2013. this can has been getting kicked around tumblr for almost 13½ years now
And yet somehow this is my first time kicking it!
Younger people, one thing I want you to understand about Millenials is that, overall, our parents taught their daughters to aim for careers and employment, but they didn't teach their sons to keep house. This causes a whole lot of Situations.
i’m bored so i’m gonna speculate about this. katniss says almost all the boys are bigger than her.
so of twenty-four tributes, that means twelve are boys. so we know for a fact that cato, marvel, unnamed district four boy, thresh and peeta are all a lot bigger than her (although i’m not sure if she’s counting peeta in this survey she’s taking here because she switches between we and me a lot in this section… he’s her selective plus one here in this scene). but that’s only five boys. there’s seven left and she said almost all the boys so i’m wondering, first off, if the boys from districts like ten or six or three are like skinny but still tall? or is katniss really like two inches tall? because she says she’s strong but small and she’s better fed than most of the tributes here but she claims they’re bigger than her. which to me doesn’t mean just taller. and then the girls too. who do you think was bigger and who do you think was smaller than her? idk. share your thoughts, sisters.
OK, two things at play here:
Some of the other kids could easily be skinny/underfed/sickly looking but taller and generally bigger in bone structure than Katniss. Don't forget many of them could have been also doing some sort of manual labor. There are more chances for older teens to be in the arena than younger ones, and he know Katniss is short and thin, and her having a wiry strength can only do so much.
The boys she claims to be bigger than could easily be younger than her. There could be 12 and 13 year old boys in there, who could not have hit puberty yet.
