I saw on your other blog you finished hazbin!!! Tell me what you thought of it. Did you like it what didn't you like I'm curious
So overall I had a good time, I won't say it's a masterpiece or anything but genuinely some of the issues Ive seen people being upset about online really are either
A) nowhere near as big as they make it out to be
B) at least on my viewing arnt actually there?
It does have flaws mind you and some glaring ones but nothing is perfect and I mean shit I had fun. I would honestly recommend it if You've always been curious, it's only 2 seasons atm so not a ton to get through so if you just want to spend a few nights binging it id say go for it. I wouldn't recommend getting amazon prime JUST for it but if you already had it or were planning to get it anyway give the show a try.
But if you wanted a more in depth list of what I liked and didn't like I can do that too
- There are some tonal issues which is my biggest critique. For example angels sexual assault is played as the serious dark moment that it is. And then pentious being pulled into the room and it's implied that happens its played for laughs. Which I will say both are ok on there own (I do think dark edgy humor is fine especially in a show like this). But the inconsistency of tone towards them is a bit jarring.
- some of the writing and worldbuilding in the show confuses me on some aspects. Like the exterminations are implied to have been going on for awhile now but they apparently only started 7 years ago? The reasoning being that it's to curb the population of hell but like....only 7 years ago? That feels like such a short time for something to be an issue compared to all of human history? If it had been past few hundred years sure but 7??
- some of the Characters and where they stand on the power scale that supposedly exists is confusing. Alastor is a legend of the demons and feared by so many yet he loses most fights he is in? It would have been interesting if the entire point of him was that all the fear was manufactured and it's a lie (which may happen in the coming seasons I'm not sure). But to my knowledge its played straight that he is terrifyingly powerful...only to loose most of the time. Same with Lucifer, we see him best Adam in a fight and thoroughly as well and yet next season are helplessly trapped. Idk it just feels off to me though this may be focused on in future seasons.
- Some Characterization feels really different between seasons. Charlie is the biggest example where I do genuinely adore her. However in the first season Charlie feels naive to how bad hell really is and how things work, it also shows how her actions with her friends though noble hearted can cause issues which she needs to understand. Where as season two feels....more like she is ignorant and refusing to see how things are as well as how her actions affect people and make a choice to ignore the issues. Idk it's hard to put into words what I mean and this is my least concern and likely just a symptom of it only being the second season so I'll wait till I see more for further judgement there.
- The animation was absolutely great and there some genuinely beautiful scenes in the show and the animation for fights was really good. Hats off to the spindle horse crew they absolutely can make some beautiful animations and art. Some beautiful art direction and choreography.
- The soundtrack, I mean it's a musical so yeah the soundtrack is going to be really important and they absolutely knock it out of the ball park. Some of those songs are absolute ear worms in the best of ways and I do really like a lot of them. So A+ on that front. Anything with Keith David is great
- The humor is actually surprisingly funny in alot of places and there are plenty of moments I think about a joke or repeat it in my head and I laugh every time. Say what you will about the cursing (which really does seem way more overblown than what people act like) the humor of the show definitely has some golden moments that genuinely got laughs out of me. Vox is one of the funnier ones to me personally
- I do need to give Viv proper applause for having such openly and unashamedly LGBTQ characters that are open about it. Not just background characters but main ones as well and who are genuinely open and up front about it. So used to media alluding to a character being LGBTQ of it's a side character or it's confirmed after a show (like twitter or something). So to have so many unashamedly LGBTQ characters Ina major popular media source is really refreshing to see and Id be mistaken to not mention that.
-While not every character's story or plotlines are the best, the ones that are really do hit home and are very entertaining (and sad) to watch. angels story specifically really hits home how all consuming things like drug addiction, sexual assault, abusive relationships are and just how much damage they can do to a person physically and mentally. I do also enjoy abel's struggle with filling in his father's shoes and stepping up to lead the executioners when he struggles so heavily with self doubt and imposter syndrome (as well as just not being as aggressive as his father).
- Nifty is genuinely a delight in every scene she is in and I routinely laughed at her and her antics.
