@kojotei hellooooooo this is lovely and stuck in my brain
The crazy thing is, ninety-nine times out of a hundred, if you asked me on any given day "Would like to see a picture of some genitals?" my answer would be "😰 No, that's... No, thank you. I'm okay, actually." I have nothing but the utmost respect for people who do engage with the penis side of the internet, but personally, I've spent the better part of two decades doing all I can NOT to have pictures of dick and balls or sexy bikini babe buttcheeks blasted onto my retinas constantly. And yet... to be denied the penis? To have a jumped up pile of javascript tell me, a grown adult with an air fryer and an outstanding council tax bill, that I cannot be trusted to withstand the sight of a bare nipple unless I let it scan my drivers' license? I will move heaven and earth to see that fucking nipple, friend. I will walk a thousand miles barefoot on hot coals before I give you big brother bitches my passport number. A thousand miles through the desert with five VPNs just to press my face up against the glass and see the last uncensored picture of two My Little Pony Characters sixty-nining each other, and I don't even want! to look at it! But I will! I must! for the sake of our fucking democracy!

i think there is something to be said about this wave of white women made media that is so surface level with an underlying racist and/or insensitive bias and that refuses to engage with criticism. i'm talking taylor swift's the life of a showgirl, emerald fennell's wuthering heights, colleen hoover, the acotar series and booktok in general, etc. whenever you dare to raise concerns about the superficiality or the questionable writing or the treatment of poc in those pieces you get shut down with a "it's not that deep" or "let women have fun". this weaponisation of misogyny to justify slop made for mass consumption, especially considering how wide spread it is becoming, scares me quite a bit. to quote princess weekes, "the girlypopification of anti-intellectualism" is truly concerning, and i do believe it is linked to the rise of far right movements worldwide. if you refuse to engage with what you are being presented with, and exclusively consume brain smoothing content "for fun" then yeah you do become more susceptible to propaganda. it is that deep.
i agree with this sentiment however i don't think dismissing these things as "slop made for mass consumption" is the solution either. women, like everyone else, are capable of making shitty, surface level art that contains unexamined biases, even if it was intended as an earnest form of self-expression. men have been doing that literally forever. obviously we can and should criticize it because no media should be above critique regardless of who made it but there is a very real vein of misogyny in a lot of the criticism of popular media made by women that men simply get to sidestep and pretending that's not a real thing is disingenuous.
i'm going to be generous and say you missed the point of my post, which may be my fault, i won't claim to be good enough with words to make everyone immediately understand what i'm trying to say.
the point is that white women have been weaponising misogyny to exempt themselves and their faves from criticism.
the point is also that self proclaimed artists like the ones mentioned above have been leaning heavily into capitalist demands of mass production and mass consumption, making superficial "art" that doesn't engage with any meaningful topic except for (and i am fully prepared to believe it is accidental and only due to a thoughtless acclimation to current political waves) the superiority and purity of white womanhood.
romantasy as a genre isn't bad. it's the refusal to engage with feedback in the name of girly fun that's the issue. i personally love pop culture and girly things, and things can be fun without being particularly deep. but when they become offensive with impunity? or when they are produced in such quantities and with such rapidity that they oversaturate the media plane, making sure that this type of superficial "white women are inherently good and only care about love and taking care of their ruffian burly white men" story is all we ever see, then we have a problem.
yes, men are also guilty of producing subtly or unsubtly racist pro-imperialist traditionally gendered content. that's not the topic of this discussion. the topic of this discussion is women disguising the same shit as feminist because a woman made it.
the point is that under fascism we all have a duty to pay particular attention to what we produce and what we consume, lest we fall pray to propaganda. and listening to life of a showgirl or watching "wuthering heights" earnestly and uncritically might not be the move. it's all giving "my jeans are blue". women aren't exempt from having to think about things or from being called out when they decide to contribute to the capitalist fascism soup.

i hate the word spicy can we bring back calling things erotic
rolling up to Wendy's to get an erotic chicken sandwich
Breasts AND thighs? Oh my...
Unfortunately, a lot of people's idea of feminism does not hinge on women are autonomous beings who deserve equal rights and opportunities, but instead on women are beautiful and precious objects that should be treated well which is not actually the same thing. At all.

The women who desperately need Taylor swift to be gay are kind of indicative of a larger trend in gay stuff where people don’t want to seek out actual gay art or culture but want to consecrate all the normiest str8 culture as somehow queer in order to feel like they are participating, without having to actually do anything deviating from the lowest common denominator broadest appeal culture industry products
youtube with ublock origin experience of the 20 second gap between every video on a playlist where youtube desperately throws itself against the impervious ever-evolving uncaring face of the adblocker's wall screaming and clawing and calling PLEASE! PLEASE, OUR AD REVENUE!! DON'T YOU WANT TO SUPPORT THIS CREATOR? DO YOU NOT CARE ABOUT OUR WALLETS? AND THEIRS? into the vast and empty sky before the adblocker gently raises one of its many iron-banded arms and flicks youtube away into the void just to hear its wails fade slowly into nothing
It's funny when I get the "You seem to be experiencing interruptions. Find out why" popup as if two unskippable 30-second ads wouldn't feel way more intrusive and annoying than a slight delay for a video to start.
ateez please see my vision...
Today I cried a little bit because I remembered that when Beethoven conducted his ninth symphony for the first time he got a standing ovation and one of the sopranos had to turn him around to see the audience.
I have never recovered from this illustration by Scott Cameron for Barbara Nichol’s “Beethoven Lives Upstairs.”
