i love fics that feel so... grown. fics about adults that were written by adults who have years of life experience under their belts who pour that into their writing. fics where you can tell this is a person who has lived through a marriage or a divorce or a child or children or parent death or any number of Huge Life Events because the way they write with an emphasis on the highs and lows of the human experience rather than an emphasis on tropes (not throwing shade) is just so. oh man, it's just so fucking good. if my blorbos are grown men, grown women, grown people, i love it when they feel like grown people, not just extensions of the (young) author's imagination. (still not throwing shade). you know?
Frankenstein (2025) by Guillermo del Toro
The Creature.
The monster was beautiful, actually.
Elordi being hot as Frankenstein’s creature isn’t some modern thirst trap twist, but it’s closer to what Mary Shelley meant in the first place. Her monster was supposed to be beautiful: black hair, perfect teeth, features chosen “as beautiful.” The horror wasn't in ugliness by design, but in the uncanny wrongness of reanimated dead flesh in motion. Once brought to life, Victor's creation became "a thing such as even Dante could not have conceived."
That’s the point people miss. Shelley knew monstrous men rarely look monstrous. They’re charming, magnetic, soft-eyed. They make you forget where the danger lies until it’s too late. Del Toro’s casting of Elordi just brings that truth full circle that the real monster isn’t the one with stitched skin or the dead flesh. It’s the man who believes he can play God, who mistakes creation for control, and abandons his "son" on the whim.
Especially in our current age, when AI threatens to replace human creativity, when tech bros fantasize about transcending biological limitations, when the question "what makes us human?" feels more urgent than ever—del Toro's Frankenstein arrives with eerie timeliness. The story is, perhaps even more relevant than ever before, with Victor portrayed as the true monster, as he always should be.

For all the folks who have been begging pleading asking for these in the inbox - behold. User @elikaruna is here to save you.
The instructions on adding such things to your AO3 profile are in the news post (at the bottom) - just replace the url in the example with the url of whichever other thing you are putting there. And probably change the alt text.
