Do people seriously still believe Sasuke was away from Sarada the whole 12 years of her life; therefore, not so much as a father to her?? Well for one, that disrespects those military dads having been away from family for many years as well but considering that I don’t have a military dad, I really cannot elaborate much about this. The only counter I can have though is that someone like myself, with no experience of a military dad, knows this is blatant disrespect.
There, done, now to my next subject.
How long was Sasuke really gone for?
Let’s take a few considerations from Naruto Gaiden itself….
1st Clue: Sasuke & Sakura traveled together, conceived, and had Sarada out of the country (In Karin’s hideout to be exact) I am using Viz’s translation here so it’s the real thing.
Pretty self explanatory. In the beginning, SasuSaku left Konoha together, bonded, conceived, and had a child (whether this was before or after marriage who knows but this is what we know for sure).
2nd Clue: Sasuke presents the idea of Kaguya remnants and a new possible world threat at the time Naruto is Hokage.
I assume that while he lived in Konoha, Sasuke took reconnaissance missions given by Naruto. Each of these missions he started to gather the information that led to this theory. It unsettles Sasuke and since he is the ONLY person who can track her, he feels obligated to keep the peace in his own way. All of this WHILE Naruto is Hokage. I don’t see Kakashi around here….. which leads me to a next clue/observation:
3rd Clue: Chapter 700, It is assumed that Naruto has just been given the title as Hokage. At least within a year or two.
Judging by Gai’s concern of Kakashi leaving the kid to run the village without his guidance is one clue to Naruto’s newly gained title. In this time, Boruto and Sarada look to be around ages 6-8.
4th Clue: Sarada’s memories so far.
1st pic: Naruto naturally assumes Sarada could explain how her father is like. This can be because Naruto has seen them bond but very much like himself, he forgot how their busy lives spend in time. Sasuke has been gone for a long time.
2nd pic: Sarada faintly remembers her parents teaching her how to walk when Naruto urges her to try to remember.
5th Clue: Two cases where Sarada asks her mom about her dad’s whereabouts.
1st: Sarada asks her mom where her dad was for the first time. She looks to me about 5 years old. The 2nd one much time has passed, Sarada has glasses now, looks around 6-7 and she is more concerned about why her dad is abandoning them since a considerable amount of time has passed since she first asked.
Last Clue: Although it was at a wrong place and time, in the end, Sasuke did recognize his own daughter. Sarada didn’t have to convince him.
If we want to analyze these panels a bit further I can point out that Sasuke used an intimidating tactic to scare Sarada with that katana moreso then try to stab her. Although Sasuke is in a weakened state (remember his sharingan/rinnegan is weak still from dimension hopping), I doubt Sasuke would miss such a close range target.
Instead he digs the katana on the pillar at Sarada’s side (You can see Sarada just hits the pillar at a backward motion–she did not dodge to the side). His surprise and sudden realization that it is really his daughter there in front of him, Sasuke reaches for her. He missed her too and reached out for her possibly because he yearned for the physical touch but he stopped himself short to compose himself due to the situation at hand.
From what Naruto Gaiden has given us, I can safely assume the timeline came as follows:
So yes, I don’t believe Sasuke was gone ALL 12 years of Sarada’s life. If anything, from the clues in Gaiden it’s cut that time in half. Regardless, I still don’t think it was right for him to leave his baby girl in the dark with no contact to her for those next 4-6 years but we won’t know how long Sasuke has been in other dimensions where contact would be impossible.
Also before I end this I like to touch on the subject of Child Development. Some interesting things I’ve come across with milestones in a child’s development include: At the age of 5, they start asking a LOT of questions. Who, What, Where, When, and Why? Sarada asks about her papa’s whereabouts around this time too. Also around this age they don’t understand so much as to ethical behavior or moral standards. Sarada doesn’t understand why his mission is more important than family. Sakura points out that it’s BECAUSE of his love for them that he’s on this mission but it’s still a hard concept for this little girl that is why she clings onto this idea as she gets older. One thing about children is this reasoning is harder for them to understand then physically seeing it. Especially at this age range.
The most important time in a child’s development is the first 5 years of their life. Sasuke was there for most of that. I am happy that he at least took the time to raise their baby girl. Still, after that she still needs more nurturing and closeness but he trusted Sakura with that while he took this job.
I haven’t taken courses in this field but my mother had touched this subject for a short while, so if there is something that I said that was incorrect please correct me.
Thank you for reading all of this. I hope I’ve shed some light to other shippers.
Edited to add Sarada’s Memory bit:
Ya’ll had concerns about how this answers Sarada’s faulty memory of Sasuke. Well, I will paste my reply I made to those who asked me:
Sasuke left while Sarada was still in her preoperative cognitive stage. This is when she is a toddler to about age 7 where she is more susceptible to having an imaginary friend. As far as Memory goes…. For children Ages 2-6 do not remember well. They are more prone to Recognizing than they are to Recalling a memory. Their brain is still developing so their visual recognition is more heightened then recalling memories. Also, they have selective attention and are easily distracted.
Age 7-11 is when metamemory kicks in. That is when the nature of memory and prediction comes to play.
So Sarada’s memory skills have not even matured yet as of Age 6 + The absence of Sasuke for another 6 years = Fuzzy memory. It makes sense.
