The second tweet is citing the 2017 Guardian article ā100 companies responsible for 71% of global emissions, study saysĀ -Ā A relatively small number of fossil fuel producers and their investors could hold the key to tackling climate change.ā
If the 80,000 people who reblogged this uncritically bothered to read their sources carefully and then take out a calculator they would find out that the meat industry is responsible for as many GHG emissions as 70 of these companies combined.Ā
You go from number 34 (Qatar Petroleum Corp - 0.54%) all the way down to number 100 (Southwestern Energy Co - 0.04%) and you get 14,5%*, which is the percentage of GHG emissions animal agriculture is responsible for.
*14.5% is if you donāt count the consumption of fossil fuel along the sector supply chains - it obviously doesnāt make sense to count it since that fossil fuel is produced by the companies listed in the article, so itās already included in the 71% figure reported above.Ā
To be more precise, the livestock sector accounts for 14,5% percent of GHG emissions measured in CO2 equivalent. Livestock are responsible for much larger shares of some gases with far higher potential to warm the atmosphere. The sector emits 37 percent of anthropogenic methane (with 23 times the global warming potential (GWP) of CO2) most of that from enteric fermentation by ruminants. It emits 65 percent of anthropogenic nitrous oxide (with 296 times the GWP of CO2), the great majority from manure. Livestock are also responsible for almost two-thirds (64 percent) of anthropogenic ammonia emissions, which contribute significantly to acid rain and acidification of ecosystems.
Between 2010 and 2050, as a result of rising demand, these shares could increase by 50ā90%: the environmental impacts of the food system will exceed the planetary boundaries for food-related GHG emissions by 110%, for cropland use by 70%, for bluewater use by 50%, for nitrogen application by 125%, and for phosphorus application by 75%. Some estimates suggest that meeting projected demands for livestock products alone will exceed the sustainability boundary condition for reactive nitrogen mobilization by 294%.Ā This means the livestock sector alone will significantly overshoot recently published estimates of humanityās āsafe operating spaceā.
We could stop using all fossil fuels and switch to renewable energy today and even then, even if every single one of these 100 fucking companies were burned to the ground,Ā we would still exceed the 1.5°C limit, just from raising animals for food.Ā Ā
Barring unforseen technological breakthroughs worldwide animal product consumption at current North American per capita rates is utterly incompatible with a 1.5°C warming target.Ā
In addition to its effects on greenhouse gases, animal agriculture affects the environment by the conversion of natural ecosystems to agriculture since, obviously, growing the crops used for feeding animals, such as soy and maize, eats up land. 26 percent of the earthās terrestrial surface is used for livestock grazing. One-third of the planetās arable land is occupied by livestock feed crop cultivation. 40% of our cereal production is not destined for human consumption, but for animal feed. So is 80% of Amazon soy.
Land use and habitat conversion are, in essence, a zero-sum game: land converted to agriculture to meet growing food demand comes from forests, grasslands, and other natural habitats. Consequently, cattle ranching is the largest driver of deforestation, accounting for 80% of current deforestation rates in South America. Seventy percent of Brazilās deforested land is now used as pasture, with feed crop cultivation occupying much of the remainder.Ā
These numbers are, of course, the result of todayās meat consumption levels: If developing countries were to eat as much meat as developed countries per capita, the amount of agricultural land required worldwide would be about two thirds larger than today.
If any of the 80,000 people who agree with this post and think it is journalistic malpractice to encourage a reduction in meat consumption could enlight me as to where they plan on finding all this land without worsening deforestation, land degradation,Ā and habitat loss, it is more pressing now than ever that they come forward with their ideas. Especially in light of the new UN report warning that āWe have 12 years to limit climate change catastropheā. From the Guardian:
1)Ā The IPCC maps out four pathways to achieve 1.5C, with different combinations of land use and technological change. Reforestation is essential to all of them as are shifts to electric transport systems and greater adoption of carbon capture technology. 2) Although unexpectedly good progress has been made in the adoption of renewable energy, deforestation for agriculture was turning a natural carbon sink into a source of emissions. [ā¦]Ā Reversing these trends is essential if the world has any chance of reaching 1.5C without relying on the untried technology of solar radiation modification and other forms of geo-engineering, which could have negative consequences.
To raise livestock also takes water: nearly one-third of the total water footprint of agriculture in the world is related to the production of animal products. The water footprint of a live animal consists of different components: the indirect water footprint of the feed and the direct water footprint related to the drinking water and service water consumed (service water refers to the water used to clean the farmyard, wash the animal and carry out other services necessary to maintain the environment). In Italy, for example, about 89% of our water footprint relates to consumption of agricultural products and 7% to industrial products. Nearly, half of the water footprint of Italian consumption is related to the consumption of animal products.Ā Ā
An important distinction must be made here between water āuseā and āconsumptionā. Hydroelectric power is one of the largest āusersā of water in the USA, but actually consumes very little water. The water is used to power turbines or for cooling and is almost always returned to the source immediately. Agriculture is the largest āconsumerā of water because it pulls water from the source and locks it up in products, not returning it to the source immediately, if ever.
Fishing also affects ecological processes at very large scale. The overall impact on aquatic systems has been described as comparable to that of agriculture on land.Ā In fact, with the rise of commercial fishing methods marine animal populations are no longer able to replenish themselves fast enough. Between the 1950ās to 2011 worldwide catches increased 5 fold while the amount of fish in theĀ sea was reduced by ½. Some scientists predict that we will see fishless oceans by 2048.Ā
The most obvious reason for the reduction of marine life is overfishing. 90-100 million tonnesĀ of fish are pulled from our oceans each year, with some sources even estimating 150 million tonnes. ¾ of the worldās fisheries are exploited or depleted. But itās not just the amount of fish being taken from the ocean for food that is the issue. there is also the method of species targeting. Humans tend to go after the biggest fish first until they are no longer available. Then they move on down the chain, a process marine biologist Daniel Pauly termed āfishing down marine food websā.Ā Over the last 50 years, the abundance of large predator fish, such as cod, swordfish and tuna, has dropped 90 percent. Fishing vessels now increasingly pursue the smaller forage fish, such as herrings, sardines, menhaden and anchovies, that are lower on the food chain.Ā The removal of apex predators leads to whatās called ātrophic downgradingā where the loss of predators allows other species to grow unimpeded, upsetting the entire ecosystem. One study suggests that the removal of sharks may contribute to climate change by leaving the unchecked numbers of species to feast on the oceanās vegetation, releasing the ancient carbon found there in massive quantities. Dr. Peter Macreadie, one of the studyās authors, cautioned that āIf we just lost 1 percent of the oceansā blue carbon ecosystems, it would be equivalent to releasing 460 million tonnes of carbon annually, which is about the equivalent of about 97 million cars. Itās about equivalent to Australiaās annual greenhouse gas emissions.āĀ With 73 million sharks killed every year for the shark fin industryĀ and 40-50 million sharks dying every year as bycatch*, this is more than mere speculation.
* bycatch is a fish or other marine species that is caught unintentionally while catching certain target species and target sizes of fish, crabs etc.Ā According to the FAO, for every 1 pound of fish caught, up to 5 pounds of unintended marine species are caught and discarded as bycatch.Ā Ā
Even marine plastic is in large part a fishing issue. It turns out that 46 percent of the Great Pacific garbage patch is composed of discarded nets, and much of the rest consists of other kinds of fishing gear. To put this in perspective, things like plastic straws - which everyone seems so eager to eliminate - make up 0.03% of all marine plastic.
All these sources of global change will rival and significantly interact with climatic change in environmental and societal impacts.Ā

Now, before anyone can misconstrue my argument, I 100% agree with the sentiment of that tweet. Our entire economic system needs to be turned upside down. Drastic changes - chief among them the discontinuation of the use of fossil fuels - are needed on an institutional level.
Whatās my problem then, you might ask. Itās this: while that twitter guy and I might disagree on the importance of individuals taking the bus instead of driving, we both obviously acknowledge thatĀ the fossil fuels that power our cars are unsustainable. And I donāt have to wonder whether or not he would support further investments in public transport. I know he would.Ā
When it comes to animal products, though, I can never be so sure.
If I listen to what youāre saying, then it seems like you take issue with my telling individual consumers to eat less meat because you want to go straight to the government and after the corporations. Youād rather we demanded subsidies for plant-based foods, and policies that restrict the supply of animal products, and more investments in plant-based companies and lab-grown meat, perhaps even changes to school and workplace menus. In other words, youād rather we held the government responsible for making delicious and nutritious plant-based food as available and convenient to the average consumer as junk food is today.
If that were your actual position, Iād be crying tears of joy. But you see, Iām not at all convinced that it is.Ā āCause your words are never backed up by actions.
If the biggest left-wing party in my country listed āreducing meat consumptionā as one of their objectives, do not insult me by telling me that non-vegan āanti-capitalistsā would vote for it.Ā I know you wouldnāt, you know you wouldnāt, politicians know you wouldnāt.Ā Thatās why reducing meat consumption is not part of any political partyās objectives and it is never going to be unless this issue becomes a deal-breaker for the majority of their voters.Ā
Thatās who consciousness raising need to start with, individual voters. Most voters are aware of the unsustainability of fossil fuels and would support reforms to reduce their use - perhaps grudgingly, but they would support them. The same cannot be said for animal products. The average citizen - even the average āanti-capitalistā - would not accept the government meddling with their diet. The meat lobby, powerful though it is, is not the only thing standing in the way, since as long as voters oppose a reform, there is no chance of it ever becoming law. Suggesting that we should back off individual consumers and go straight after giant corporations is completely out of touch with reality because it ignores this simple fact.
Furthermore, you may tweet about the futility of individual consumers taking the bus, but you then follow that up by letting politicians know that you want them to take care of electric cars and public transport.Ā Do not tell me that non-vegan anti-capitalists are known for letting politicians know how concerned they are about animal agriculture.Ā
You donāt want us to leave you alone and go after corporations. You want us to leave you alone period. Most of you want to leave the livestock sector completely untouched and out of the discussion.Ā
Thatās not possible.Ā A global shift toward a plant-based diet is part of the institutional changes that need to take place to stop climate change.Ā Itās not a nice little addition that we can survive without. It is an integral part of any serious climate change mitigation plan.Ā
This isnāt my opinion. It isnāt neoliberal propaganda. There is scientific consensus on this. In fact, there is not much difference between being a climate change denier and denying the role of animal agriculture in climate change.Ā
How come one study is all it takes to convince you that 100 companies are destroying the planet, but no number of studies is enough to convince that the livestock sector also plays a role??

Naf, what are your favorite animes/mangas? Also, happy new year!! :)
Happy new year!!Ā
So I had an old list of my favorite anime/manga but itās a bit outdated so Iām gonna make a new one. Yeah!
(this is a long as fuck post, apologies!)
Comics/Manga:
OtoyomegatariĀ (eng: Brideās Story):Ā so I know this series is already pretty renowned but ITāS JUST SO GORGEOUS. The detail and research that goes into this series is so! frickinā! good!! The characters are subtle but full of personality, the humor is delivered in a very human way, the pacing is slow and gentle but full of interest, the story telling is refined. And the cultures are not demonized?? While there are āoutsiderā perspectives everyone works realistically within the confines of their societies and itās really respectful. The age gap of the main couple (the groom is 12 and the bride is 20) has so much potential to be squicky but itās healthy and not framed in any gross way. I love the way the series jumps to different areas and explores small arcs outside the main storyline, all staying within the theme of cultural marriages. Among these side stories, there is one with a majority dark-skinned cast, and the main characters are these carefree and fun-loving twin girls who are so much fun to read about! Thereās also another story with a healthy polyamorous story that is, again, actually very accurate!! (Some people could argue itāsĀ āplatonicā but the way itās executed really, really drips with romance lmao.) Highly suggest this series!!
Boku no Hero Academia (eng:My Hero Academy): Iāve completely fallen into the BnHA pit. I didnāt expect to like this series THIS MUCH but it is really, reeaaalllyyy damn good. Iāve never read a shounen series that had so much thought and good editing put into it. Like, it has incredible reread value! Thereāre a lot of small jokes (like single-panel but still very effective! jokes), unbelievable attention to detail, and itās very obvious the characters were all worked out before the story was kicked off. The pacing is great, the momentum never feels sacrificed, yet there are still good chunks for breathing and emotional development. The characters are all very well-written even if theyāre notĀ ālikeable,ā you always have someone to root for, and the superpowers are refreshingly executed. The action is fucking FANTASTIC, and the story itself is intriguing with a lot of emotional impact without becoming hamfisted. There are still some issues with it, especially with the small amount of female characters and some unneeded romance undertones, but overall those criticisms do stay asĀ āundertonesā and probably werenāt done intentionally. A lot of the potentialĀ āfanservice scenesā are usually subverted in a hilarious way
Gakuen Babysitters (eng: School Babysitters): OOH BOY. This oneās a story about a high school with a daycare attached to it (mainly for the teachersā kids). The main character is a high school student with a toddler-age younger brother, theyāre new to this school and have to meet all the other kids⦠who are fucking adorable. All the toddlers at the daycare are really fleshed out, they all have set personalities and arenāt unrealistically angelic and some are bratty and most are CUTE AF, and they all have their moments to shine. Sometimes the characters border on caricatures or one-note jokes, but it works well for comedy and is generally kept fresh. Thereāre also some typical romance-y things but theyāre totally glazed over in favor of the toddler-plots and YES A STORY WHERE KIDS ARENāT USED AS A PLOT DEVICE TO MAKE SOMEONE MORE ROMANTICALLY APPEALING AND seriously this series is SO CUTE you all should read it.
Bokura no Hentai (eng: Our Transformations): the āhentaiā here is ātransformationsā not porn lmao. Anyway this series is about three kids who meet through an online ācross-dressingā community. The main character is actually a trans girl!! The other two mains are both cis, one gay one straight. The straight boy does say homo/transphobic things at the beginning but properly apologizes for his actions later. The series also deals with death in the family, mental illness and recovery, gender (obviously) as well as gender expectations and even addresses hypersexuality as a result of trauma. That being said, there is a heavy warning on this series for noncon situations and molestation. However itās thankfully not treated in a romantic or rose-tinted way in the least. Some of the character growth is a little sudden (esp straight cis boy, I felt his turnaround was too fast and drastic) and some of the endgame couples (or implied couples) have some meh undertones, but overall a good story. The series is finished now and ended on a pretty good note, but the epilogue is incredibly sad. I suggest maybe not reading the very last chapter if youāre in a bad place mentally right now.
Kase-san: If youāre looking for feel-good wlw media, Kase-san is the shit. Itās sooo sugary and sweet, but still has good character growth and story development. It generally deals with real-world teenager stuff, but the couple is very healthy and progresses at a realistic but still romantic pace. Warnings for intense butterflies lmao this series is seriously so gentle and high-school romance-y in the best way. The biggest surprise is how the main girl grew on me so much? Like I have a huge pet peeve for cookie-cutter protagonists, but Yamada has so much personality and strengths! Even though the story is told from her perspective and generally follows her pining after the titular love interest, Kase, there are enough glimpses into Kaseās personality and motivations too (which helps to balance things out), and just Yamada herself is very vibrant and sweet! This series puts me in such a good mood
Tamen Di Gushi (eng: Their Story): Another good wlw series! I know this series is already pretty popular on Tumblr, but if anyone was still on the fence about it, I really think you should give it a shot. The romance is sweet and adorable but what really gets me is the HUMOR. The gags in this series are fucking out of this world, I canāt explain it well but the timing, expressions, and circumstances are SO FUNNY and the artist pulls it off so well!! I always look forward to the updates just because theyāre so funny
Anime:
Idolm@ster: ugh donāt even talk to me about this one itās a total guilty pleasure but all the characters and even the sides are GREAT (I love the faceless president lmao). Itās a story about a start-up idol agency, and how all the adults are working to help each of the girls become famous. It was originally a video game (with some questionable content) but the anime is REALLY GOOD and very endearing and each of the girls has a moment to shine and grow. The songs are cute and the dances and performances are so rewarding to see esp after all the characters go through, and UGH Itās all so adorable, esp 2nd season. I love this show.[A NOTE: donāt watch the movie. Just donāt. Itās awful. Bad production value, unnecessary drama, A USELESS SIDEPLOT ABOUT A GIRL LOSING WEIGHT itās awful donāt do it.]
Idolm@ster: Cinderella Girls: New cast of idols, new agency, very different pacing. The beginning 7 episodes are a little hard to get through, but after that first trudge, the quality skyrockets. I actually think there were some things I enjoyed more about CG than the original im@sā thereās a bigger focus on the actual work they do (like their idol theming), company politics, and a MUCH BETTER VILLAIN introduced in the second season. This series doesnāt focus as much on each individual character, but the ones that do get development really hit home strong.
Escaflowne: one of the first animes I ever watched when they were dubbing it in fox kids. I rewatched the subbed anime when I got older and I gotta say itās really lasts the test of time.Ā Aside from the geek factors (high fantasy!! tarot cards!! dragons! MAGIC MECHS!!) the story and characters are really great. The main character, Hitomi, is just such a strong baby whoās never outshined by the other characters. She goes through a lot and still is allowed to feel vulnerability, it never quite feels like she has toĀ āproveā herself worthy of being a hero just ābecause sheās a girlā etc, sheās allowed to be strong and courageous while also weak and in need of help, very multi-layered! And thatās only the main girl HAHA donāt even get me started on the other characters. Some of the later story can be a little weird? Thereās some weird real-world references and one of the characters has an interesting(?) gender issue. I donāt personally know how I feel about it but itās worth having a mild precaution to anyone thinking of going into this series.
Again, this is unfinished! I have sketches down for a lot of these but no time yet to properly illustrate them yet.
Iām also going to start sorting the Ocean of Cycles world info into this tag, so if anyone has questions, please try peeking in there first! I need to organize my blog a bit so it might be sparse for a couple days, thanks everyone for your patience as always!
Dye spent WEEKS getting all of this in order with everything weāve settled on so far!!! please check it out if you were curious about our OoC Bestiary so far <333
Hi! Just wondering about tattoos in your fantasy world. Do some races have cultural tattoos/markings specific to them? Do some races have tattoos/markings purely for aesthetics? If so, what sort of styles are there? Are there social stigmas against this sort of self expression? Also I just wanted to thank you for being so patient with us all and taking the time to thoroughly answer our questions!
Itās my pleasure!! Thank you all for your curiosity and interest! :)))
Tattoos are mainly used in the East and North:Ā
East: the masters of magical tattooing are the Fae, and the Garuda close behind (out of shared religion). The Fae tattoos are famous for being enchanted by the tattoo artist, giving the bearer increased magical prowess. Magical tattoo artists are typically water or metal element, having a close relationship with the ink, bodily fluids/blood, and the tattooing instruments.Ā Fae and practicing Garuda believe that tattoos are holy, and a way of getting closer/stronger to your element and the gods. For Fae, who are a heavily religious culture and train in magic all their lives, a young person without tattoos is usually still in training, while an adult without tattoos is seen as uneducated/unlearned or unfortunate. While for the Garuda, who see religion as a personal choice, people with tattoos are considered highly spiritual and trained, maybe even a bit reticent and hard to approach because of their discipline. The aesthetic style of Fae and Garuda tattoos are the same, and are based on the Sak Yant tattoos of certain Thai monks
North: through trade, the art of magical tattooing has made its way up North as well, where itās popular with warriors (and has lost most of its religious meaning). - Dwarven tattoo aesthetics are usually abstract shapes done in the style of popularizedĀ Scottish war paintĀ or sometimes blackout tattoos- Ogre warriors will sometimes haveĀ solid bandsĀ (usually in white ink to stand out against their grey skin) done in a style similar to Hopi clown kachina dolls- Jotun normally have tattoos resembling Celtic tattoos or, for lack of a better reference, popularizedĀ ātribalā tattoos- Nomads donāt typically tattoo themselves, even though they were the first culture in the north to come into contact with the art form. Theyāre a very family-oriented culture and find body modification disrespectful to oneās parents.

Northern Wargs on dA
Some wargs! To be specific, the main pack used by the mercenary family, the Clan of Storms
Iāve been developing the Wargsā design for my fantasy world, since they were the first animals I came up with and lots of things have changed! The biggest change is the fact our wargs now breathe fire and, in general, are known to harbor fire magic, making them great companions to have up in the cold North. Matriarchs of warg packs grow impressive antlers that glow with flame magic
Under the cut there are small blurbs about the Clan puppies from left to right:
