If your plot feels flat, STUDY it! Your story might be lacking...

Stakes - What would happen if the protagonist failed? Would it really be such a bad thing if it happened?

Thematic relevance - Do the events of the story speak to a greater emotional or moral message? Is the conflict resolved in a way that befits the theme?

Urgency - How much time does the protagonist have to complete their goal? Are there multiple factors complicating the situation?

Drive - What motivates the protagonist? Are they an active player in the story, or are they repeatedly getting pushed around by external forces? Could you swap them out for a different character with no impact on the plot? On the flip side, do the other characters have sensible motivations of their own?

Yield - Is there foreshadowing? Do the protagonist's choices have unforeseen consequences down the road? Do they use knowledge or clues from the beginning, to help them in the end? Do they learn things about the other characters that weren't immediately obvious?

What makes a story

Goal: the big scale external embodiment of character desires (and the personal reason for wanting them)

Process: the meat of the story, the scenes you are writing the story for, the key moments

Steps: the plot milestones. how you feel the progress of the story

Requirements: the themes, the answers to the story’s questions

Examples

Naruto

Goal: to become Hokage, a leader bringing all ninja together (to become someone worthy of respect)

Process: action fights with magical techniques, monster fights

Steps: the ninja ranks, defeating enemies and terrorists, gaining respect from rivals, peers and teachers

Requiremnts: teamwork and believing in yourself

Hunger Games

Goal: defeating a corrupt oppresive government (protecting family)

Process: shooting arrows, charismatic speeches and appearances, symbolic dresses and songs, fighting scenes

Steps: surviving, winning Hunger Games, gaining trust and regard of sponsors and people, inspire and lead a rebellion

Requirements: freedom, compassion, friendship, determination, defiance

Harry Potter

Goal: defeat Voldemort (live safely in peace)

Process: magic duels, wand wielding, other magical challenges (tournament, creatures etc)

Steps: pass classes, study, forge friendships, get stronger, find horceuxes, win the war

Requirements: love, friendship, humility, self-sacriface, importance of choice, corruption of power, death

Princess Mononoke

Goal: to reconcile the natural and human worlds (to cure the demonic curse caused by dark emotions)

Process: actiony fight scenes, animal gods, demonic creatures

Steps: finding the source of darkness, understanding both sides of conflict, making allies, helping to make peace and working together

Requirements: balance, coexistence, tolerance

Etc. You can do this with any working story and check or develop your own.
