Genuinely disappointed. DHMIS and now this? What the actual fuck. Thought you were different dropout.
Getting exposure for the cast is great imo, but doing it through copaganda? When your platform is know to be anti-cop/ACAB? Dropout is great for getting these lesser known actors/comedians recognized for their talents but this..? This ain’t it.
It’s giving fake & disingenuous. Dropout is ACAB for profit. Disappointing.
I saw some comments about this situation on Insta and I want to update my thoughts here. From what I read ‘The Rookie’ it’s supposedly a left-leaning show that’s critical of the LAPD. I’ve also heard they work with (and are possibly funded by) the LAPD themselves. I haven’t researched this myself so I can’t speak to the accuracy of these statements.
I think the situation is nuanced- like I mentioned earlier dropout is an amazing platform for getting lesser-known actors screen time and showing how talented they are. They work to hire a diverse cast (obviously they still need to do more with our trans-feminine family, and they should never stop working to make everyone feel included, accepted, and represented) and have shows that speak to leftist values.
I’m still disappointed in this move with ‘The Rookie’ and I’m glad so many are speaking out about it. It was something that was filmed months ago now so there’s no taking it back, but an acknowledgment/apologies would go a long way. Dropout has asked we keep them accountable and we need to take them up on it.
All that said, I don’t want to fully say I’m done with Dropout until I see how they respond to fans’ feedback. I want to know who I’m giving my money to! Is it a sell-out, money hungry platform? Or was this an honest misstep while trying to get their hard working talent more recognition with the first show that wanted to play ball with them?
But if dropout continues to support the people, and causes I care about- is that worth abandoning it over this? I have no intention of forgetting this and brushing it aside, but I also know there are far greater evils out there than a streaming company at this stage. I don’t want to abandon what appeared to be an ally to leftists when we have so few.
Sam did respond in a article with Variety. Here is an excerpt:
“I can’t speak for the cast, but I’ll speak for myself and say that the opportunity to expose Dropout to a big audience – one that’s probably not already familiar with us – felt too good to pass up,” Reich said. “We owe everything to our fans, who are super passionate and hold us to a high standard, so it’s perhaps inevitable that we upset folks sometimes.”
I respect this response and I figured this was why they jumped on this chance. Still disappointing, but I respect that Sam addressed it and is standing by the cast while still acknowledging it is a chance to learn and grow.
