How to Write a Winning resume when you think you’re worthless.
A HOW TO GUIDE BY YOURS TRULY!
When people meet me the first thing they say is “Wow Alicyn, you need to stop apologizing for everything.” This statement is shortly followed by “How are you, a huge fucking crybaby and a gigatic mess, able to get a job as a Customer Service representative for two highly ranked company’s?” I’ve never told them but I’ll tell you because you don’t call me a freaking crybaby.
First thing I’d recommend is creating a Basic Resume. This serves as a solid foundation for each resume you send out. There are three different kinds of resumes chronological, functional, and combined.
I recommend using a combined, but you can find the one that works for you. A good resource to use is The Everything Resume Book. Here is an example of a Basic Resume.
This is the “Story of you” or Basic Resume that provides a solid foundation for your edited resume.
RESUMES SHOULD BE DIFFERENT FOR EVERY JOB YOU APPLY FOR.
Now let’s find a job. I went t indeed.com and searched for “entry level” but you’re going to want to find a company you like and search there. This is just an example. When you use such search sites as INDEED or MONSTER you’re actually better off going to the company itself and finding the job listing there.
So I found a job as a bank teller cause I wanna make BANK. You always wanna do this in a way you can easily compare the jobs you’re looking at. Two at a time is enough, applying for more is just going to get you confused and miserable. We’re going to focus on the job as a bank teller.
Here are their requirements:
Now what you gotta do is find their “Key Words”. A lot of resume programs thesedays throw out applications unless they have these magical “Key Words”. That means a person might never see your resume. That just will not do. So what you wanna do is copy/mimic the posting.
So let’s go back to our resume and match the skills they want with the skills we have and where and when we learned them and used them.
Here are the skills they are looking for:
But meeting the basic requirements isn’t enough to get the job you want. Let’s think of three of my skills that I have that aren’t on this list.
Crying, Binge-Eating, Excel
Now, I can’t exactly put that on a resume so let’s reword it using action verbs
Crying now becomes Creative Problem Solving.
Binge-Eating now becomes Intolerant of Waste.
Excel now becomes Microsoft Excel and similar spreadsheet programs.
Now let’s Match these up to JOB 1, EDUCATION and JOB 2
Cash handling experience, Organization and multi-tasking Sales experience
Communication Skills, Good math Skills
Excellent CS skills, Team player and adaptable.
Now let’s edit our resume to match the banking environment. As most of our skills are in the jobs, we may actually want to go back in time in our chronological format.
So now this resume is literally tailored to the job I’m looking for.
On my next “How to” I’ll teach you how to follow up to these kind of standard things. As I know a)the location and b)the company I’ll be waiting a week to show you how to follow up.
This isn’t my best work but you get the general idea right?
