Samurai Champloo Headcanons:
First time I've ever posted here! A little nervous... I just wanted to share some personal headcanons I have about Samurai Champloo and my favorite trio. Some are my own, some are inspired by fanfics. :) Feel free to leave a comment with some of your own? Do we do that here? XD
Fuu has slight bunny teeth
Fuu secretly copies Mugen’s wild fighting and Jin’s precise technique with a stick sometimes
Fuu’s hair is always messy because she’s always fidgeting with it
Jin composes haiku and keeps a small notebook where he writes them down occasionally
Mugen likes to play with Fuu’s hair, trying to braid it with clumsy fingers sometimes. In return, Fuu sometimes cards her fingers through his hair or weaves tiny braids into the longer pieces
Fuu’s kimono has stitched patches from all the times she gets into scrapes. She always tries to find red or blue thread to make her fixes
Fuu’s got a small spattering of freckles across her nose
Mugen’s got slightly extra-sharp canines, one of which sticks out a little more and always catches the light when he smirks
Mugen’s got a couple scars that are from regular mishaps or general stupidity—but he always spins a cool story and lies about them instead
Jin’s the worst of the trio at cooking—a fact Mugen won’t let him forget
Jin’s hakama are most faded at the knees from kneeling. He only lets Fuu patch them up once she promises to do it on the inside so the patches can’t be seen
Fuu sketches sometimes if she can find stray pieces of charcoal for her diary. Flowers, landscapes, Mugen and Jin. When she and Mugen get together, he’s often got charcoal smudges on his cheeks
Fuu has a habit of humming when she’s bored or nervous. Mugen complains about it but sometimes he’ll hum along with her, even if he’s off-key
Fuu’s fingernails are always uneven because she’s got a bad habit of biting them when she’s lost in thought
Both Mugen and Fuu have a soft spot for stray animals, tossing them food scraps even when they have little to spare
Mugen’s obsessed with finding the perfect rocks to skip and is always trying to beat his previous record
Mugen’s stupidly competitive about dumb stuff, always dragging Fuu and sometimes Jin into it—then cheating shamelessly
Jin has the driest, most deadpan sense of humor ever, slipping out at unexpected times and usually at Mugen’s expense
Jin has a river stone he collected when he was a boy because he liked the way it felt. He keeps it tucked into his sleeve and rubs his thumb across the natural groove in its surface when he’s deep in thought
Jin is very patient with Fuu but has no patience whatsoever for Mugen’s antics. He’ll sit with Fuu and teach her to do something, but glare at Mugen sharply if he happens to interrupt
Mugen’s got a scar that Fuu accidentally gave him. She chucked her sandal at him, he tripped and hit his cheek on a rock, and the cut healed into a faint scar. Mugen sometimes thumbs at it with a smile he won’t let anyone see
Mugen’s got a weird habit of chewing on random things: grass, twigs, even chopsticks sometimes
Mugen’s weirdly superstitious, vague things from the Ryukyu Islands that he can’t really explain but just does anyway
Jin has a thin streak of silver hair—not from age, but from some freak stress moment he speaks nothing about. He tries to cut it short every time he notices it, but it always stubbornly grows back
Jin’s protective streak is more subtle than Mugen’s. He’ll adjust his stance if he feels Mugen’s about to start a fight, or stand just a little closer to Fuu in sketchy towns
Jin’s obsessed with tea, trying to perfect his technique even when they have poor ingredients. He sips it completely stone-faced while Mugen gags and Fuu politely chokes it down. He’s always rigorous about the process, stirring and steeping, and sometimes he actually makes decent combinations with random ingredients. When he has the proper leaves, he brews a perfect cup of tea
Fuu and Mugen have a secret handshake, totally by accident. They fumbled smacking at each other and it somehow stuck
Fuu tends to over explain herself she’s flustered, sometimes tripping over her words
Fuu likes to make-up fake constellations, make them her own. Like pointing at a group of stars and declaring that’s the “great dumpling thief”
Mugen’s got a shark bite scar on his left calf from a run-in with a shark that almost killed him. He was just a kid on the Ryukyu Islands when it happened, but it’s noticeable if you look close
Mugen’s got a lot of restless energy, a bit like hyperactivity. He can’t sit still to save his life, always tapping his fingers or jiggling his leg, gnawing on something or pacing. Sometimes he drags Fuu and Jin on energy-burning walks, growling when they complain
Mugen’s weirdly good at whistling, and he’s really loud with it
Mugen somehow always winds up with leaves and twigs caught in his wild hair—even when he pulls them out, they come right back
Mugen’s got a hidden streak of pride about silly skills—like how fast he can climb a tree or crack open something with his sword. He’ll show off to Fuu, then act like it’s no big deal when she claps or smiles
Jin’s intensity is quiet—he won’t raise his voice, but his stare alone can make Mugen back off mid-rant
Jin’s secretly appreciative of cloud patterns. On long walks, he’ll tip his head back to watch the clouds drift by, letting his feet just move him
Jin’s got a ritual of tapping his sword hilt with the pointer and middle finger of his right hand three times before a fight, a way to recenter himself for combat
Fuu secretly envies people who seem fearless, but she’s so afraid of becoming someone who doesn’t care at all that she clings to her empathy, even when it hurts
Mugen dreams of a place he’s never seen: somewhere peaceful with no enemies, maybe a beach and a house and a girl who looks suspiciously like she’s wearing a pink kimono—but he’d rather than choke than ever admit it. Too afraid of being “soft”
Jin sometimes wonders if he’ll ever forget how to feel anything—if his discipline has numbed him too much. Sometimes he envies Fuu and Mugen, watching them argue with such fire, and he wonders if he’s already lost something he can’t name
Fuu’s kimono sleeves always have smudges of dirt from Mugen tugging her along, his hands always dirt-stained but warm
Fuu and Mugen have a game where Fuu tries to sneak a pebble into his pocket. She’s gotten good at it, and he always tosses it back with a grin whenever he finds it
Mugen laughs like a hyena
Mugen’s nicknames for Fuu include “sunflower” and “dumplin’”
Mugen’s favorite color is yellow. Because of Fuu
