i recently finished the war people (isbn: 9781009428408) which is about a regiment of soldiers in the 30 years war. the regiment's bailiff-and-secretary mattheus steiner, being the principal documentary source, comes across in an interesting, ambivalent way as he combines a pretty earnest dedication to fairness and legalism with the more cynical demands of keeping a regiment together and surviving as a soldier. i mention the book because he reminded me strongly of your type of guy. it's quite short and very readable. cheers!
