Alright, listen up, folks.

My hours have been reduced to nothing for months now on account of disabilities I'm trying to get treated for, I got a med bill I wasn't expectin' in the mail, and now I'm woefully far from bein' able to pay for my upcoming psychiatrist appointment, which I have to pay for by the 24th of this month. This one is really important because there's a strong probablility this one will be the one to prescribe me some meds that just might enable me to be able to acually take care of myself (read: actually function at all) for the first time in my life. I'm prolly gonna need like $300 to cover the appointment. I ain't askin' y'all to help me for free, however.

I can sew together little pillow monster things. They have zipper mouths and button eyes. They're hand-sewn, from a pet-free home.

This is my oldest (and smallest) example. about 7" wide and tall. The ones I'm proposing to sell will be about 9" wide and tall.

Here are the buttons and (9) zippers I have available for this endeavor. (Sorry about the lighting.) Note the loops on the zipper pulls for easier zipping.

Uhh, those are soda can pull tabs in the corner. Ignore that, I'm procrastinating on working on a project.

In terms of fabric, I have fleece and flannel of various colors. 'S all preshrunk in a washer and dryer, but I don't have a good way to showcase or store fabric other than shoving it all into one plastic bag. That aside, here's the flannel I have:

(Dark blue, light blue, teal, white, space [small amount], and scales [purple, blue, and green scales, small amount])

And here's the fleece:

(Purple, red, orange, and black [small amount])

Note how I have more of some colors in one material or another than in others. This means certain body surface colors may not be possible due to material limitations. I have a whole bunch of thread colors, and just an overall abundance of thread tho 👍

These are custom made to order, and the production is paid in advance. You can do custom colors (body, front vs back color, the color of the inside of the mouth, whether or not you want it to have a tongue, number / color of eyes) and you can POTENTIALLY do other customizations. (Want it to have a ridge on its back like a cartoon dinosaur? Want me to give it horns? Want me to try to figure out how tassles work? Want it to have floppy, doofy, cow-lookin' ears? [I recommend fleece for these kinds of additions, trust me on this one.]) Shape alterations mmmmaayyyyy be possible, but that's pretty dubious. Bear in mind that any customizations / additions will likely drive priduction time wayyy up, and there are things I might not be able to do.

Shipping will be paid seperately, and at the time of shipping. I can't really afford to cover shipping, but also I have no earthly idea how to calculate shipping. I have a tiny scale at home now that I can use to weigh the finished product, but that's about it. These are gonna have to be personally taken to the post office, which means a lot of walking. I dunno, we'll figure it out.

This is all being said and shown in the interest of maximum transparency with this stuff. You will recieve update images with progress on your little monster dude, and you're gonna have to give feedback on the button placements and angles before I sew 'em on so that way I know I've got the look you want on it.

Most customizations are going to be (sort of) experimental on my end, and hand sewing takes forever, especially when you have "everything magically is really hard and takes too long" disease.

It’s wilder than that. You feel the temperature drop around you. Animals start to freak out cause they think night has fallen. Even more crazy is shadow snakes. Where you see the shadows around you start to shimmer. Kind of like the shadows of atmospheric disturbances you see during really hot days or near a fire.

Also, the overall tone of the light is wrong and it’s almost impossible to articulate why.

It’s not dark per se, but the light doesn’t just seem dimmed, it seems like it’s in a different spectrum.

HERE’S THE THING THOUGH

I used to work for a call center and I was doing a political survey and I called this number that was randomly generated for me and the way our system worked was voice-activated so when the other person said hello you’d get connected to them, so I just launch right into my “Harvard University and NPR blah blah blah” thing and then there’s this long pause and I think the person’s hung up even though I didn’t hear a click

And then I hear “you shouldn’t be able to call this number.”

So I apologize and go into the preset spiel about because we aren’t selling anything, etc. etc. and the answer I get is

“No, I know that. What I mean is that it should be impossible for you to call this number, and I need to know how you got it.”

I explain that it’s randomly generated and I’m very sorry for bothering him, and go to hang up. And before I can click terminate, I hear:

“Ma’am, this is a matter of national security.”

I accidentally called the director of the FBI.

My job got investigated because a computer randomly spit out a number to the Pentagon.

When I was in college I got a job working for a company that manages major air-travel data. It was a temp gig working their out of date system while they moved over to a new one, since my knowing MS Dos apparently made me qualified.

There was no MS Dos involved. Instead, there was a proprietary type-based OS and an actually-uses-transistors refrigerator-sized computer with switches I had to trip at certain times during the night as I watched the data flow from six pm to six AM on Fridays and weekends. If things got stuck, I reset the server. 

The company handled everything from low-end data (hotel and car reservations) to flight plans and tower information. I was weighed every time I came in to make sure it was me. Areas of the building had retina scanners on doors. 

During training. they took us through all the procedures. Including the procedures for the red phone. There was, literally, a red phone on the shelf above my desk. “This is a holdover from the cold war.” They said. “It isn’t going to come up, but here’s the deal. In case of nuclear war or other nation-wide disaster, the phone will ring. Pick up the phone, state your name and station, and await instructions. Do whatever you are told.”

So my third night there, it’s around 2am and there’s a ringing sound. 

I look up, slowly. The Red phone is ringing.

So I reach out, I pick up the phone. I give my name and station number. And I hear every station head in the building do the exact same. One after another, voices giving names and numbers. Then silence for the space of two breaths. Silence broken by…

“Uh… Is Shantavia there?”

It turns out that every toll free, 1-900 or priority number has a corresponding local number that it routs to at its actual destination. Some poor teenage girl was trying to dial a friend of hers, mixed up the numbers, and got the atomic attack alert line for a major air-travel corporation’s command center in the mid-west United States.

There’s another pause, and the guys over in the main data room are cracking up. The overnight site head is saying “I think you have the wrong number, ma’am.” and I’m standing there having faced the specter of nuclear annihilation before I was old enough to legally drink.

The red phone never rang again while I was there, so the people doing my training were only slightly wrong in their estimation of how often the doomsday phone would ring.

Every time I try to find this story, I end up having to search google with a variety of terms that I’m sure have gotten me flagged by some watchlist, so I’m reblogging it again where I swear I’ve reblogged it before.

But none of these stories even come close to the best one of them all; a wrong number is how the NORAD Santa Tracker got started.

Seriously, this is legit.

In December 1955, Sears decided to run a Santa hotline.  Here’s the ad they posted.

Only problem is, they misprinted the number.  And the number they printed?  It went straight through to fucking NORAD.  This was in the middle of the Cold War, when early warning radar was the only thing keeping nuclear annihilation at bay.  NORAD was the front line.

And it wasn’t just any number at NORAD.  Oh no no no.

Terri remembers her dad had two phones on his desk, including a red one. “Only a four-star general at the Pentagon and my dad had the number,” she says.

“This was the ‘50s, this was the Cold War, and he would have been the first one to know if there was an attack on the United States,” Rick says.

The red phone rang one day in December 1955, and Shoup answered it, Pam says. “And then there was a small voice that just asked, ‘Is this Santa Claus?’ ”

His children remember Shoup as straight-laced and disciplined, and he was annoyed and upset by the call and thought it was a joke — but then, Terri says, the little voice started crying.

“And Dad realized that it wasn’t a joke,” her sister says. “So he talked to him, ho-ho-ho’d and asked if he had been a good boy and, ‘May I talk to your mother?’ And the mother got on and said, ‘You haven’t seen the paper yet? There’s a phone number to call Santa. It’s in the Sears ad.’ Dad looked it up, and there it was, his red phone number. And they had children calling one after another, so he put a couple of airmen on the phones to act like Santa Claus.”

“It got to be a big joke at the command center. You know, ‘The old man’s really flipped his lid this time. We’re answering Santa calls,’ ” Terri says.

And then, it got better.

“The airmen had this big glass board with the United States on it and Canada, and when airplanes would come in they would track them,” Pam says.

“And Christmas Eve of 1955, when Dad walked in, there was a drawing of a sleigh with eight reindeer coming over the North Pole,” Rick says.

“Dad said, ‘What is that?’ They say, ‘Colonel, we’re sorry. We were just making a joke. Do you want us to take that down?’ Dad looked at it for a while, and next thing you know, Dad had called the radio station and had said, ‘This is the commander at the Combat Alert Center, and we have an unidentified flying object. Why, it looks like a sleigh.’ Well, the radio stations would call him like every hour and say, ‘Where’s Santa now?’ ” Terri says.

For real.

“And later in life he got letters from all over the world, people saying, ‘Thank you, Colonel,’ for having, you know, this sense of humor. And in his 90s, he would carry those letters around with him in a briefcase that had a lock on it like it was top-secret information,” she says. “You know, he was an important guy, but this is the thing he’s known for.”

“Yeah,” Rick [his son] says, “it’s probably the thing he was proudest of, too.”

So yeah.  I think that might be the best wrong number of all time.

People are out here arguing that gatekeeping cpunk from people is actually perfectly fine because able-bodied ND people have mad- and neuropunk and that's "perfectly fine" with them and it's actually annoying as fuck imo, large explanation under the cut I forgot to add originally

• First of all, try to tell me that physically disabled people are mentally perfectly fine and have never had their mental health compromised as a result of their physical disability. Just try, I'll wait. Just like how I'm waiting to hear about "able-bodied" ND people not having any physical issues purely as a result of being ND.

• Secondly, that doesn't make gatekeeping with the mad- and neuropunk communities okay EITHER, even IF the first bullet SOMEHOW happens to be true. The separatist mind-body dichotomy is predicated in entirely false pretenses. The experiences between the physically and mentally disabled communities have SO much overlap. One "form" of disability is not inherently more or less disabling than another, that's down to the individual(s) and their conditions. A lot of either "form" can restrict people's abilities to perform a lot of the same tasks regardless of what the tasks may be or what "form" of disability is responsible for it. A lot of medical conditions (and systemic ableism) can produce a whole lot of symptoms that present like mental disorders.

• In the same vein, we DO have to acknowledge that some people have their disabilities affect them in ways that not everyone experiences. The experience of having a psychotic break isn't comparable to the experience of being wheelchair-bound. But neither is the experience of being a low support needs autistic that can function independently and being a high support needs autistic who can't bathe or dress independently and will need lifelong supervision, and this is just two examples of the same disorder! A person who's chronically bedbound isn't going to have a comparable experience to a Deaf-Blind individual, even if they both wind up with lifelong caretaking requirements. If we can acknowledge that experiences in the mentally disabled and physically disabled communities aren't going to be universal even WITHIN our own communities and we don't turn to separatists about it, what makes the physical and mentally disables communities as wholes any different?

• This one's the big one, and I see it a lot, you guys really need to learn what punk actually means. PUNK isn't about the "by X group and for X group" mindset at all. It's not about "X group of people vs X group of people." It's a community of people who are standing together against a SYSTEM. It's about highlighting society's wrongs and shouting about it, and trying to enact change in whatever way we can. Its praxis is just activism. You don't have to be black to stand with the Black community and fight for their rights, and fight systemic racism. You don't have to be a woman to be a feminist, and fight the patriarchy. You don't have to be queer to get down in the trenches with them and fight queerphobia (allies still get bottles 'n shit thrown at them regardless). You don't have to be disabled to stand against systemic ableism. You don't have to be the direct target of systemic oppression, or specific, targeted systemic microaggressions to fight it.

What punk is is getting down in the thick of oppression right alongside those who have to deal with it as a concrete force in their daily lives and being right next to them when shit hits the fan, fighting the same fight they are, and taking the blows as if you were one of them, because to those who want to perpetuate it, you might as well be. Anyone can be an ally, and allyship IS what punk is, just as much as being a member of a targeted group fighting for their rights. Systemic oppression doesn't care about the nuances when it lines us all up against the wall, and our infighting is doing its job for it. The second we start singling out groups of people for their identities is when we've already lost. Anyone standing up against these sytems is punk.

Anyone GATEKEEPING a punk movement isn't a punk, they're a fucking poser. A cop. A fed, even, because there are no cops at punk.

Can you have specific communities OF [x people with x identity and experiences], by and for that group by definition, to discuss their specific experiences unique to their situation(s)? Sure! Just don't do any fakeclaiming in the gatekeeping, mmk?

And don't you DARE call it fucking punk.

First of all, that’s not what we’re saying at all. The only thing you need to be in cpunk is a) fight against a system and b) be a fucking cripple. Anything else is chill. That’s like saying that a queer group HATES trans people and doesn’t want them ANYWHERE near them because they made a group for them separately, while trans people also have their own, separate group, and there’s a mutual group as well. We’re not saying you can’t have a single thing wrong with you because you have a mental disability. We’re saying you need a physical thing wrong AT LEAST to be a CRIPPLE.

Secondly, I agree with that. One form is not inherently worse. That’s also not what we’re saying. We’re saying, “Hey. You, person who is physically crippled. You can be a part of us. We literally do not care about anything else besides being punk and crippled. Simple as that. You can have whatever else wrong with you. We don’t care.” Again, we’re not saying one is worse. We are not saying there are certain things that we struggle with that NO ONE ELSE can EVER struggle with in their entire life. The communities are different in the same way the queer (as a sexuality) and trans people are different. They just are. There is no one way to be trans or queer. There is no one way they can be discriminated against. There’s a shit ton of overlap. But they’re different.

About the “calling it punk” issue, what the fuck do you think we’re doing? If there was a movement called queerpunk (which there probably is, and if there isn’t, it should be one), we would not call allies queerpunk. They would be qpunk allies. They may be discriminated against like queer people are, but they are NOT the same. The whole point of cpunk is to say “fuck you” to the government, to the world, and to people like you.

On another note, may I ask why you’re so upset about a bunch of discriminated people finding their own community? May I ask why you feel the need to be a part of anything? Why you get butthurt over being excluded in something that never included you in the first place? Instead of bitching about something you don’t even understand, maybe look inwards and figure out what the fuck is wrong with you and your feelings.

Punk has always been a political movement, not a demographic, and dividing ourselves is just slitting our own throats by alienating people )who often have a lot in common with us) who would otherwise be steadfast allies who would understand some of our struggles, albeit possibly in different ways than how our own specific experiences manifest. If it was a demographic, it'd wind up coming with a lot of self-defeating logistical issues, and a lot of gatekeeping that we can see happening around us today. 

• Just how bad off do you have to be to be considered "disabled enough" to join a specific disability movement? If you have a mental illness, do the psychosomatic symtoms count? What if they were bad enough to give you continual stress headaches or nausea? What if they were so bad that they physically prevented you from being able to work without throwing up on the job? 

It goes in the other direction too ofc, how much distress does a physical disability have to bring before you can be considered "mentally unwell" enough to be a fit for the neuro- or madpunk movements?  Do you qualify once your chronic pain or fatigue makes you irritable enough to hurt those closest to you, or once you start to have anxiety about potential flareups? What about mental issues brought on by traumatic brain injuries, or conditions that cause hormonal changes that prompt mood swingd? Where is the line drawn for any of these groups?

• Why is the line drawn there (wherever "there" might wind up being) of all places?

• Who gets to draw the line?

• Why do they, of all people, get to draw the line?

• Who gets to enforce where the line is?

Suddenly, we're in a system of arbitrations and policing, which is decidedly not punk by definition.

This is very clearly illustrated by how not a single person who has disputed me hasn't made some sort of a comment about themselves being physically disabled and trying to imply that I wasn't. This is an attempt to make an arguement from authority. Again, very much not punk. Frankly, I'm of the opinion that all aguements from authority, self-proclaimed and otherwise, hold no weight in themselves. I don't give a damn about who you are, your disability status, or anything related. The validity of any idea lies in what the idea is, not where it comes from. 

I never brought up my chronic fatigue, my extensive list of dietary restrictions on account of my disorders, all the medications I have to take, or the fact that I've been put out of work for months now because of flareups, because frankly they have jack shit to do with what I'm saying, and I never asked for a laundry list of anyone else's issues either. I don't care.

Is it wrong for people to have communities to themselves to discuss experiences specific to them, by and for them? No! Those are an incredibly important part of advocacy, vital even. What it's not is punk. 

With any punk movement, punk has gotta come first.

Look at it this way: is afropunk racist and not actually punk because it’s not open to all POC? Because they want their own space? Go ahead and tell me that’s bad. Go ahead and tell me it’s racist. Go on.

The thing that you seem to me missing with what I'm saying is that I'm operating under the idea that any punk submovement is there to address specific problems that don't get enough time to shine under broader punk movements, like basically being faucets of punk, rather than to be signifiers of specific demographics of people that comprise the movements themselves. The riot grrl submovement someone else linked me when trying to prove me wrong actually has excellent examples of this, with several bands featuring male members. Those guys are riot grrls. Because it's a political movement.

Doubling down on saying "if you're physcially disabled you can be part of the cpunk movement" is an attempt at drawing a line, and then you say in the same breath that there is no line. Which is it? And why has no one addressed the elephant in the room about the line? Could it be because it would have to be arbitrary?

And there is no line as to “how disabled you have to be,” which is what you’ve continuously said over and over. The person who created the cripplepunk movement said it was for and only for physically disabled people. You’re spitting on their grave. Cripplepunk is a movement that rejects being a “good cripple,” rejects any notion that people “deserve” being crippled or that they “did it to themselves.” How the fuck can MI/ND people understand what that’s like? I have some of the most demonized mental disorders (schizophrenia and DID, to name a couple) and yet I had no clue what it’s like to be physically disabled. As soon as MI/ND people are actually physically disabled, as soon as they have a physical disability, they can join cripplepunk. But they just want to infiltrate our space and kick us out again. Do you not remember? During COVID? Where MI/ND people kicked us to the curb? Where they said we deserved to be in pain on the off-chance we were drug seekers? Where they said we deserve to die because wearing a mask was uncomfortable for them? Where they called us slurs and dressed as us for Halloween? Where they kicked us down and broke our mobility aids?

You can be an ally, but you cannot be a part of something that you don’t understand. I’m a bi man, who only likes men and non-binary people. Imagine if I decided to go in a lesbian space and say I was being excluded. I’m Jewish. Imagine if I decided to go into an Asian space and say I was being excluded.

You were never a part of us. You never will be. We can still be friends, you can still be allies. But don’t act like you’re wanting to be in cripplepunk for any reason besides being the center of attention. Fuck off.
