Chapters: 1/1 Fandom: 9-1-1 (TV) Rating: Teen And Up Audiences Warnings: No Archive Warnings Apply Relationships: Evan “Buck” Buckley/Tommy Kinard, Evan “Buck” Buckley & Theo, Tommy Kinard & Theo Characters: Tommy Kinard, Evan “Buck” Buckley, Theo (9-1-1 TV) Additional Tags: Theo has two dads, Prompt Fill, Tommy Kinard Has Bad Parents, Evan “Buck” Buckley Has ADHD, Theo Has ADHD (9-1-1 TV), The Buckley Siblings Have Bad Parents (9-1-1 TV), Pride Summary:
Now, Tommy has lived more than four decades on this planet and he recognizes that one of the hardest things about being an adult is unlearning all of the fuckery that one’s parents mistook as proper parenting. He knows this, and Evan knows this - and both of them have decades worth of parental fuckery to unlearn.
Tommy thinks they’re doing a great job. But then, there are days like today - when the ghost of Tommy’s still very much alive father and all his terrible parenting comes to visit and perform a proper haunting of the present.
New York Times readers share a moment when they have felt truly swept off their feet — or have been the ones doing the sweeping. (Bonus: more stories from the comments)
Not even romantically, I want someone to do something like this for me. My best friend, the first time I stayed over at hers, secretly arranged to pick up the dog she sometimes walked so she aand I could take him out to run around because I love dogs and she knew I'd love it. Way before she was my best friend - which is maybe why she is my best friend now.
its so weird to me that cis people will dislike their name so ardently and yet. not change it. you guys know that’s an option, right. no one can make you keep the shit name your mom gave you. no, not even her.
One of my friends in undergrad changed his name because he didn’t want to bear the name of his abusive and absent father. It’s been years since he did it, and he still says that it was the single best decision of his life.
One of my friends in high school changed his named as soon as he turned 18, so that the ethnic name his family gave him was finally the name reflected on all of his paperwork. He told me that he understood why his parents had given him an “English” name, but that he felt that if he needed to assimilate in order to succeed, then that was a type of success that he didn’t want.
When I was on my way home from the courthouse after changing my own name, I got into a conversation with my rideshare driver, who was extremely interested once I told him what I was in court for, and wanted to know how I’d done it, how much it cost, was it difficult, etc. It turned out that his girlfriend had chosen the name “Yo-yo” when she came to the United States, unaware of how rare that was as a name, and that she was frequently made fun of because of it. Neither one of them had realized that a name change was so easy, and he told me he was excited to let her know that she had options.
There was an intern at a summer job I had once, who changed her name to be the same name, but a different spelling. She said that she had no idea why her parents had spelled her name so oddly to begin with, and suspected that it was just an honest mistake either by them or by some nurse, but it had been a headache for her entire life, and it was a huge relief to not need to be correcting people’s spelling on important documents anymore.
One of my exes legally changed his name to have an exclamation point, because he liked to sign his name with an exclamation point.
You can always change your name if you don’t like it. You always have that option. It doesn’t matter why – it can be conformist or anti-assimilationist, serious or silly, a minor change or a major change. Your name is yours, and you have every right to change it to be whatever you want.
I changed my last name for complicated family reasons - ironically, my family not-infrequently forget I've done it - and technically my first name, which was hyphenated even though no one ever used the hyphenated bit.
When I announced the change at work, a colleague said my new name sounded like a 1920s private detective. It's one of the best things anyone ever said to me.
Hey I have a question for y'all.
From where you are right now, could you reach the nearest sea or ocean by foot in less than a day?
Yes
No
(reblog for sample size)
It's like a ten minute walk if I walk slowly.
I have been listening to this podcast called Betwixt the Sheets, The History of Sex, Scandal & Society, and it's really reminding me of the main reason that you should listen to experts. It's not because of the reason media usually shows, them having encyclopedic knowledge of their subject (though many do have that) it's their ability to sort.
This podcast demonstrates that ability really well because sex scandals tend to be used as propaganda, so it's difficult to tell if they are true or not. The host will ask the historian guest, "Did he have sex with men?" and the guest will say something like, "Well four sources say so, but three were written after his death and the one from his lifetime was from a dude who REALLY hated him, so I'm going to conclude no."
That is what an expert can do, that we've perhaps forgotten about because we have so much information at our fingertips, an expert can tell which information is good & valid vs. bad & unreliable. An expert can sort much faster than a layman because they've been doing it for years.
It's the same for my field. Some things I am absolutely sure are wrong, like if someone says "We only use 10% of our brains." No, we use all of it and I can even tell you what every part does. But other claims, if I see a news article claiming something that sounds fishy, I can read the research article behind it and judge the validity of the source. I can sort. I know which parameters to sort on. That was the entire point of my education and it was pounded into my head.
Knowledge isn't enough. Researching isn't enough because if you don't know how to sort you'll just be led astray down dangerous rabbit holes. That is why experts are so important.

I'm so happy to see all of these in one place.
it's a very distinctive running gag
My favorite Tommy Kinard moments (in no particular order):
Not without feeding you
Dude you already gave him a good ride, a good night, and all that on a bare mattress, and then you went to get ingredients to make a full spread, and you also got champagne. Champagne! You're also an idiot to run away
Cursed cowboy funeral
Like, sure, let's dress up for some mummified cowboy remains because my boyfriend thinks that's the only way to lay a curse to rest, and look devastatingly handsome doing it
First time kissing Evan Buckley
Romantic, sweet, surprising, so fucking tender. Gimme them back.
Coffee not-date
He looks so cuddlesome. I would've gone nonverbal for about ten minutes while I took in all the softness wrapped around that big frame. And then I'd say "come to the wedding with me as my future husband"
God I hope so
He knows what he likes in bed. Very confident, very sexy, very much something I appreciate.
Flirty Tommy
Evan Buckley, you are taking those flying lessons and the payment is loving this guy for the rest of your life
The Nose Crinkle Smile That Ended Me
Fuck you. Why did you have to be so cute and charming and cute and handsome and cute
Forget Spumoni, You're Now Dessert
He looks so good in this shirt. Nothing else matters in this scene (shut up shut up shut up)
Beast Mode Tommy
Yeah I'd have made out with him right there and then too, forget the wedding.
the egyptian vulture is small vulture found from the iberian peninsula to north africa, west asia and india. like many vultures, a large portion of their diet consists of carrion - however, they are opportunistic feeders that eat a variety of found foods, and willing hunters. they predate on small mammals, birds, and reptiles, and are known for their love of feeding on the eggs of other birds. large, thick-shelled eggs are difficult for the vultures to open, and they have been recorded using tools to access the inside of the egg, such as dropping rocks onto the eggs to crack them open. egyptian vultures have also been recorded using tools in other ways - they use twigs in order to roll up found wool to bring back for use in their nests. adult birds’ plumage is white overall, with black flight feathers. they also have notable bright yellow facial skin, which is bare as in other vultures. wild birds often appear brown or rusty in color from contact with iron-rich soil. the egyptian vulture is currently considered endangered by the IUCN. with few natural predators for adult birds, most of the threats to wild populations are human-influenced, such as poisonings (both accidental and intentional), hunting, pesticide accumulation and collisions with power lines.

If you’ve never seen one of these birds in person, you’re missing out. They are truly regal birds. Elegant. Strong. Intelligent.
They feel otherworldly. Like this bird might be sent by one of the gods.
If you’re ever in St Louis, stop by World Bird Sanctuary and meet Dynasty. His presence alone will move you. He’s just a truly beautiful bird.
