I don’t think we’re rick rolling each other enough anymore. 1. it CANNOT die out 2. this under saturated market is perfect for unsuspecting victims who’ve been lulled into a false sense of security. be the person you hate. bring back the dastardly link
okay but this made me wonder if there was actually any academic literature on rickrolling and YES THERE IS this is a paper about rickrolling WITHIN academic literature. As in, studies that attempt to rickroll the people reading them. Best part is no one is going to believe me and click that link even though it’s 100% true.
Teaboot's right, there is basically nothing on earth that could convince me to click the second link. I genuinely believe it might be real, but i'm not touching it.
there was a great study a few years that went into the whole "ppl online are bigger jerks than irl cuz theres a virtual wall and no repercussions" and the researchers were expecting to see that be the case but it turns out that people who were really angry or argumentative online were also found to just be assholes in person and people who were pretty patient and nice online were found to be patient and nice in real person as well
and it just debunked that whole cynical idea that people will naturally be mean if theres no punishment for it
the researchers found that being online didnt make people more hostile, but that being online allowed already hostile people to dominate forum conversations, and the less aggressive people were much less likely to reply or engage, ending in just the aggressive people bickering at eachother
This would have had me crucified on tumblr 10 years ago but maybe we are ready for this conversation now:
If you are a socially anxious person, you have to socialize. Your panic/anxiety attacks will only get worse and trigger more frequently if you constantly avoid contact with The Public. Not saying that you need to be a social butterfly- but there is a genuine problem with not being able to order your own meal at a restaurant. And it cannot be solved by always having someone else do it for you.
This is a PSA to about 3/4s of the Portland Youth populace
everyone who reblogs this and is like "I ordered my own tea this week" or "I only barfed once when I had to give a presentation'- you are doing amazing sweetie. Have patience with yourself, you are relearning a skill so difficult that people get 4 year degrees to do it professionally.
ooohhhhohohohoho hiveworks did a bad. hiveworks did a BIG bad.
To put it simply: they fucked over a lot of their creators by not paying them. they made WAY too many ambitious promises, and there are allegations of manipulation / abuse from that of the platform owners Xel and Isa.
It's unfortunate because Hiveworks was seemingly a great option for people who wanted to elevate their webcomics to traditional publishing, but eventually they couldn't afford to do print anymore, and now they're functionally the same as any other comics collective, akin to Foxglove Comics or SpiderForest (i.e. the benefits are just hosting your site through them and being a part of an organized collective of artists for the sake of community collaboration and cross-promotion).
Hiveworks Comics press release regarding the future of the webcomics site.
Buuuuut a lot has come out since then from creators who have worked for Hiveworks and now it's become pretty obvious why the platform has been downscaling. They are severely in debt and don't have a plan, at least not one they're capable of committing to or fulfilling.
Webcartoonists formerly hosted on Hiveworks have spoken out in a statement alleging financial misconduct by management
Now, one thing that came out of this whole mess was a new guild of artists called the Hiveworks Artist Guild, basically operating like a union where it would represent the actual artists and protect them from further mistreatment.
Buuuuut unfortunately apparently even that group isn't entirely honest either because according to a few creators who have tried to work with them, they've faced issues with certain folks being allowed into the guild who really shouldn't have been allowed in-

Unfortunately I can confirm this kind of behavior as well, from the Cartoonist Co-Op. There is a current attitude of bailing out and protect
That said, I only know so much as what I've seen online. I'm not really in talks with any creators specifically who were involved in this situation so take all of this with mountains of salt, it's a lot of hearsay and allegations, much of which happened a decent while ago so the situation may have even changed since then (but heeeeyyy, if you're one of the creators who was affected by this and you wanna share further details I may have missed or misrepresented, my inbox is always open! wink wink)
Unfortunately because of the nature of webcomics as an accessible free form medium, it's extremely easy for artists to get taken advantage of by platforms that promise money, growth, traditional publishing opportunities, etc. It's what's allowed platforms like Webtoons to trap so many creators in hostile contracts. A lot of the folks in this community are passionate and hard-working, but we're also a bunch of big-eyed dreamers who often yearn for more outside of just our little webcomic circles, and so it's hard not to put our faith and trust in platforms like these - after all, these platforms are the ones making these promises in the first place, and they know it's easy to do.
But that's also all the more reason why it's important to address these issues when they arise and not stand for this kind of treatment, so we can hopefully get better at identifying red flags in contracts and publishing deals and standing up for ourselves if and when we find ourselves trapped in one.
Bear religion probably fucking rocks. You're a fucking bear, you're the deadliest thing on earth, once a year an endless supply of salmon just flings itself up the river to gorge on and then you nap for 3 months.
The most delicious food in the world is protected by tiny demons who can defend it from everyone except you. Your natural armor is thick enough that you can just eat the damn hive while they buzz around you. God's chosen animals right there
Regular bears tell stories of angel bears sent by the Bear God, pure white and twice as strong as any normal bear could be, who rule the summit of the Earth and kill all who stand in their path.
And they are right, those bears exist and totally do that. Humans just have fake angels as a cope.
love the idea of bears being the chosen species actually. having a near death experience and glimpsing heaven and realising it's just full of bears, no humans at all, humans not ensouled actually, humans an accidental byproduct of God's plan for bears
The new Odyssey adaptation has inevitably gotten people talking about a Muppet version of it, and they’re frequently suggesting Kermit as Odysseus, Miss Piggy as Penelope.
I’m sorry but that’s thinking way too small, hear me out:
We need to have Miss Piggy as Odysseus, and Kermit as Penelope.
Think about it… who’s the more fickle, prideful, warlike one in that relationship? Who is absolutely ready to go ham, at a moment’s notice?
But who is the single human cast member in this tale? Who gets to put in an Oscar-worthy performance alongside the Muppets and what role are they to play?
There’s no single human, everyone is a Muppet except for one scene. Circe, played by Janice, turns Odysseus’s crew into humans who still behave animalistic and are all played by Academy Award winning actors.

I enjoyed his solo comic (even if it was over too soon) so planned to do a sketch of the new costume but got a bit carried away and made it a full piece 🥹
an interesting linguistics find! so I'm reading this text from 1908 and it keeps referencing "hp" in the context of "not being at full hp" "applying your full hp to a task" etc
and I'm like....... okay that is a perfectly normal way to describe energy and reads totally clear to me, but I KNOW you don't mean hit points/health points which is the first place my brain goes, so what are YOU using hp to mean
and it's not explained in-text, which means it was common enough to not warrant explanation to the 1908 audience, so gotta look elsewhere
horsepower. turns out it's horsepower.
and I'm absolutely FASCINATED that a commonly used initialism from 1908 now stands for something different AND YET the contextual meaning is still the same to a 21st-century reader
I could hand this guy my nintendo switch and he'd be like, ah yes I understand, this ''''pokemon'''' loses horsepower throughout the fight

As you may or may not know, my husband and I don't have much of a support system. We were hoping through the kindness of my readers we could knock off all the small stuff so that my husband and I can focus on affording the larger stuff. No pressure, but anything helps!!! Thanks everyone for your support and for reading 💕🐣
