The state of the subtitles on some of HB's episodes is honest to god unacceptable
Subtitles are a tool to aid those who are deaf or hard of hearing engage in media they enjoy, and Viv treats it like a crutch to add more bullshit jokes
The ableism (and if not that, the lack of awareness or critical thinking) is fucking stunning
Even with the jokes in the captions, it's still entirely legible and doesn't skip out on any dialog. When a joke is displayed in the captions, there's nothing being spoken. It's not taking away from the experience of people who happen to need captions
I actually watched through the "Oops" episode again, and these are the only times jokes in the captions are being made, again while no dialog was being spoken
Any other times were just goofy noise descriptions.
The captions are entirely legible and don't leave out even a single word of the dialog in the episode. Ya'll are so quick to call ableism on something that isn't ableism.
It'd be ableism if the captions were obstructed in a way that made them inaccurate to the dialog. Helluva boss doesn't do that at any point.
Thank you for coming to my Ted talk
Are you deaf?
I don't have to be to understand the concept of ablism, but yes, I am hard of hearing.
Ableism is, by definition: "discrimination in favor of able-bodied people."
The jokes in the captions are just the same crude humor you'd see if you had the captions off. They are not discriminatory. They do not take away from the experience of watching the show for people who need captions.
I understand not liking VivziePop. There are things that I myself dislike about her writing and art. But you can't call ableism on a person and be wrong about the definition of the word. Again, what Vivzie did in the captions isn't ableism. Whether good or not, it's just the same crude humor in the show itself
So instead of calling ableism on the captions, maybe we can point out the lack of diverse body types, or some of the bad writing when it comes to female characters in favor of their male counterparts, or even the frankly rude "humor" surrounding fatphobia
