✿ I’m Broadwaybalogna, but you can call me Elli! I’m a Zutara and subsequently, Katara enthusiast ✿
♡ My asks are ALWAYS open for ♡
1. Zutara fanfiction prompts
2. Katara, Zuko, or Zutara drawing/sketch prompts
3. Literally anything! It never hurts to send some support my way!
This is a safe space for everyone! But I am not afraid to take you as unseriously as possible before blocking you if you decide to spread unnecessary hate.
can u do one where zutara are very protective of one another? it could be set post-sozin comet &/or post zuko got hit by lightning ^^
Hey anon! So I actually already have a fic much like this!
An Archive of Our Own, a project of the Organization for Transformative Works
I also have another fic that follows the protective aspect that you seem to like!
Summary:
> After the Agni Kai with Azula, Katara stays by Zuko's side to make sure he stays safe. Once he is stable, however, she asks the question that's been itching at the back of her mind for weeks and Zuko doesn't know how to respond.
An Archive of Our Own, a project of the Organization for Transformative Works
And here’s another fic I wrote that’s post Agni Kai! (It’s actually the first ever Zutara fic I wrote👀)
Summary:
> Over the course of a year, a suspicious new ambassador of the Northern Water Tribe tries to form an unlikely friendship with seventeen year old Katara. Needless to say, Zuko does his best to comfort his friend.
An Archive of Our Own, a project of the Organization for Transformative Works
Summary:
> A retelling of the end of Zuko and Azula’s Agni Kai because we were ROBBED.
> Or: Zuko doesn’t know what happy tears are and thinks Katara is either insane or dying.
apparently there's a new massive anti in the zutara tag causing shit and listen, from a fandom old:
don't argue with them, starve them.
don't respond to their shit. don't give them air. don't argue with them, even when their arguments are infuriating bullshit. ignore them, block them. if they send you hate or send their friends to attack you, delete the messages and comments and block them. free blocklist. they don't "win" if they get you to block them, they win if you engage.
don't feed the trolls.
trolling like that is not a thing that, like, okay people do. it's either someone who is genuinely just an asshole looking to hurt people or someone who is going through some shit and making it everyone else's problem, and either way, arguing with them accomplishes nothing. just ignore them. block them. delete the comments, the asks. block the people who reblog the post with their shit. it's not your problem. they're the ones being the assholes here, but engaging with them - even when you're making good points - just gives them more air to set fire to.
block that asshole. block them until the whole tag has blocked them, and block every sockpuppet they make, too. this is our sandbox, and if they don't like it, they can go to a different one, not take a shit in ours.
she quite literally respects no personal or online boundaries. it started on twitter with her screenshotting people’s tweets and reposting them to turn those people into laughing stocks. then it escalated into stalking old tweets, obsessively monitoring certain users 24/7 (because she’s always very quick to screenshot brand new tweets), and of course she also does this to people who have blocked her. blocking someone is already an online boundary, but she clearly has no issue violating it and continuing the harassment anyway.
she even screenshot a minor’s tweet, someone who had her blocked too, and turned them into a target for mockery, which then led some of her followers to go harass that minor directly. that’s genuinely unhinged behavior.
she also mocked an Iranian woman who had been inactive for three months because of the war, making fun of her lack of edits. and more recently, she made some “joke” involving a zutara fan, asking her followers who would “fall in love first” and yada yada. her followers then (and her going along with it) started creating romantic and sexual scenarios involving this person, purely to mock and humiliate her. and mind you, this zutara fan openly expressed discomfort with the whole thing. honestly, i’m not even sure it can be called a “joke” when they aren’t even friends, and when the person involved was clearly disturbed enough to question whether it counted as sexual harassment (and yes, that’s sexual harassment). she obviously did not consent to being used for this weird parasocial humiliation “joke”.
so no, do not expect any good faith from her. if she’s using our main tags, it’s because she wants attention. at this point, it honestly just feels like she’s either deeply unemployed or deeply weird, maybe both, and that picking fights, acting like some online Regina George, and publicly mocking and bullying people is the only way she gets attention and validation. so let’s not give her that.
Another person has started misusing the Zutara tag. This is their account:
Do yourself a favor and block them. They’re looking for attention. Do not give it to them. They are actively trying to harass Zutara shippers because they believe we deserve it.
Early morning with Master Katara and her husband, the Fire Lord :)
Edit: I’ve been told Inuit people don’t appreciate if non-Inuits draw their tattoos even if the character is based on them, so I’m sorry about that! Did some edits, and we’re here again.
Did a ficlet for them here:
“Master Katara,” he breathed out.
She tried not to let his reverence sink its teeth under her skin, shooting him a warning look instead.
When did he even drop to his knees, she wasn’t sure. But the glow of the early morning sun was gentle against his skin, outlining the glistening raven hair that stayed barely out of place despite recently falling out of bed, and his bare feet tucked properly underneath his weight while he rested his palms on his thighs. He looked as if he was already on the that throne of his, spine straight and head high before her—Katara would have allowed herself to properly appreciate him more if she hadn’t been busy running today’s itinerary through her head, making note to find her fellow business partner before their event began.
“Lord Zuko,” she answered plainly, letting him pull her near, his chin digging into her front, golden eyes glinting with quiet mischief. “You need to get ready, or you’ll be late for your appointment.”
For a man who had connected with supposedly extinct dragons and faced down homicidal fathers, he had no right to look adorable when he jut out his bottom lip. “Why can’t I join you instead?”
“The Caldera Hospital doesn’t need you now,” Katara busied herself with her hair, collecting the wayward strands in a half-hearted top knot to resolutely ignore the warmth of his hands on her hips. “Besides, you don’t like networking, and the opening ceremony will last for more than a few hours, at most.”
The audacity of this man to sigh so heavily, rubbing his face against her stomach, trying again with, “I promise I won’t get in your way while you work.”
“Are you thinking of avoiding Chancellor Jin again?” She asked in amusement, and got her confirmation when he tightened his hold on her. “Really, Zuko, you’d think the man isn’t helping you.”
“He’s too helpful,” he grumbled, lifting his head again to meet her gaze with the hopeful gleam of his own. “I can be the Fire Lady’s chaperone instead of listening to him try to get me to transfer some land to his cronies.”
“It’s cute that you think you can convince me,” She leaned down to kiss his forehead, bypassing his frown entirely. “And you’ll be fine. Just remind those two buddies of his of their excursions to the seedy part of business, threaten to forfeit their positions in the Chancellor’s circle of ministers for how long they’ve been doing it and how much money they’ve taken from them, and you’ll get all three of them off your back. What kind of ministers do we have to do that, anyway,” she added with an aggrieved mutter.
Zuko hummed in interest. “Audit did present to me more damning evidence that’d quickly wrap them up.”
“There you go.” Katara was about to slip out of his hold, and pushed back a smile when he wouldn’t let her go. “Yes?”
“Another?” He innocently asked, to which she made a big show to roll her eyes, making him chuckle. “Wow, sorry, really.”
“You’re so spoiled,” she teased, but cupped his right cheek, the scar almost velvety underneath her touch when she tilted up his chin to capture his lips with hers.

Katara tries the spicy food from the Fire Nation for the first time
Zuko takes a “diplomatic” trip to the Southern Water Tribe
Zutara realizes they’re both single at the same time for the first time
I’m back to taking prompts babee💃🕺💃🕺 anyways, this honestly took me way longer than it should’ve to write. I think I started it at the beginning of my spring semester this year and now it’s summer… my bad…
“Zuko!” Katara’s voice screeched as she ran towards the dock to the Southern Water Tribe. She was only on her mid-twenties, but she retained the same energy she had when she was a teenager.
Zuko immediately braced himself for impact upon hearing her voice, but reciprocated the hug the moment they made contact.
“What are you doing here? You aren’t supposed to visit for another few months!” Katara fires off a myriad of questions before Zuko can even respond.
“Well, is it a problem?” Zuko finally interjects, cutting Katara off from drawing her own far-fetched conclusions about his arrival.
“Don’t even bring such prophesies into existence, Zuko. Of course it isn’t.”
“Good! Then there is nothing to worry about.”
Katara narrows her eyes at Zuko, but doesn’t question him further, instead opting to show him around the new additions to the South.
“Sokka’s been a phenomenal chief. You should really see him when he’s in his element. It’s actually weird. He’s somehow become… responsible!” Katara’s words force a laugh out of Zuko, who listens intently to everything she has to say.
“And you? What have you been up to?” He asks.
“Spirits, too much! I’ve been training a lot of the newer Waterbenders, and every few months the North will send down some of their promising Waterbenders to train under me as well. I’ve been helping Toph put together a new form of underground fighting. ‘Pro-Bending’ she wants to call it.”
“I think I heard of that. I remember her telling me she wanted to set it up in Republic City.”
“She has her sights set high, that’s for sure. But I think she’s really onto something with it. What about you? What’s new with the Fire Lord?”
“Agni, the title still sounds as corny as ever.” Katara chuckles at Zuko’s blushing face. “Actually, that reminds me,” Zuko takes off the backpack he’s still wearing from his trip and rummages through it. “I brought a gift for you.”
This time, it’s Katara’s turn to blush, “What!? Why would you-“ she stumbles over her words before taking calming breath, “A gift?”
“Well, it might be less for you and more for me.” That causes Katara to raise an eyebrow at him and cross her arms. “Here.”
In Zuko’s hand is a small bag of red chips. Katara stares at the bag incredulously.
“Each time you visit, it’s always on business, I feel like you’ve never gotten to really see the Fire Nation. So, I figured I’d bring a piece of the Fire Nation to you.”
“That’s… actually really sweet.”
It’s true, Katara doesn’t even visit the Fire Nation all that often, and when she does, she’s always on a time crunch and has no time for the smaller, trivial activities that one would normally do when visiting.
“They’re Fire Flakes, a Fire Nation delicacy,” Zuko adds, proudly.
Katara can almost swear she’s heard the name before, but nothing comes to mind.
She takes the bag from Zuko’s hand and puts it in one of the pockets of her parka. “Thank you, Zuko.” A soft silences passes between the two of them. Then, as if nothing happened, Katara straightens up and smiles up at Zuko. “We prepared a royal igloo for his royal highness! Let me show you around!”
Zuko adjusts his backpack back into place and follows Katara.
~
“So… how’d you find time to vacation again? One would think with your schedule you’d be busy all seconds of the year.” Katara sits across from Zuko in the common area of the Cheif’s Igloo.
“You’re gonna laugh.”
“Well now I need to know!”
“I actually… I don’t know? My Uncle spoke to my advisors one night and the next day he had my bags packed and a ship ready.”
Katara stays silent for a moment, her mouth slightly agape. “No…”
“Yes.”
“You’re joking!”
“On Uncle’s name? Never.”
“Oh.. my.. spirits!!” Katara laughs, “Is your uncle some kind of fairy godmother?”
“I think he does it less for me and more for his own enjoyment. Just to see what he can get away with.” Zuko chuckles along.
“Goodness, well I wish he could’ve come as well. Iroh is always wonderful company.”
“He’s actually the one who suggested I bring the Fire Flakes. I was looking around the town for something small to bring with him and he pointed out one of the stalls that sold them.”
“Oh right! Let me try some of those!” Katara reaches into the pocket of her parka and pulls out the bag of Fire Flakes. “Would you like some?” She gestures for Zuko to take a chip.
“Well, if you insist.”
Katara takes out a chip for herself. She brings her chip between the two of them as if it was a wine class and Zuko follows, ‘clinking’ the two chips together. “So how’s Mai?” Katara asks as she takes a bite and-
Oh.
Oh spirits.
Now she remembers.
And she wishes she actually had some wine to wash it away.
She begins dramatically fanning at her mouth as Zuko laughs at her reaction.
“You planned this!!” Katara yells, though it comes out more as “Oo anned dis” because of how wide her mouth is.
“What? Me? Never…” Zuko drawls as he covers his smile with one hand and goes to grab another chip with his other.
Katara slaps his hand away from the bag and sends a playful glare at Zuko. “You are evil!”
Zuko continues to laugh. He ends up avoiding another one of Katara’s swats and steals another chip from the bag, eating it with ease and a lack of discomfort that makes Katara want to pounce on him.
Katara crosses her arms and leans back on the chair she’s in. “Your uncle should be glad he didn’t come.” She grumbles.
“I wouldn’t be surprised if this was why he didn’t.”
Katara sighs and whips her head to face up in defeat. “Whatever. Where were we?” She thinks for a moment, “Right, Mai! How is she?”
“Oh… yeah- uh. We’re actually not… I actually didn’t even know for the longest time,” Zuko laughs to himself “I think she was trying to push me away or something but that’s literally just how she is all the time so I couldn’t tell.”
Katara snickers ever so slightly.
“What about you? Are you uh- seeing anyone?”
“Not since Aang. Apparently men don’t like the concept of a woman being stronger than them.”
Now it’s Zuko’s turn to snicker.
“So we’re just two bachelor-bachelorette’s in the Southern Water Tribe, then?” Zuko questions playfully.
“Anything could happen,” Katara smirks.
Another silence falls between the two, this one thicker than the last, full of something more weighing it down.
Are they flirting?
Katara takes another chip from the bag and takes a bite that can be no larger than a millimeter. “It’s actually not bad when it isn’t burning you alive,” Katara says, which causes Zuko to snort.
Surely not.
But that night, Katara can’t get the sight of Zuko laughing out of her head.
Sorry if I'm bothering you but can you share why you think avatar is bad?
ur asking for a lot bc that show is a complete and utter mess. first my tibetan ass wants u to think about the fact that its a show using asian/indigenous ppl and their devastating histories made by ignorant weeaboo white men. I wanted to write about it in detail bc i’ve always wanted to say something about this but never rly got around to doing it. avatar was a big part of my childhood (that did make my father uncomfortable) so I’m speaking from a place not entirely out of hatred or spite. maybe ill send this in letter format to the writers lol. anyways im going to split this up into parts. I’ll put a readmore bc its kinda long
@bryankonietzko i really hope you take a nice long look
1. Unexplained, Stereotyped, and Insensitive/Uneducated Political Parallels
avatar uses cultural and religious elements of different asian/indigenous cultures and sorta smashes it all together to create a very superficial fantasy world. The first thing you need to know is that the air nation is an obvious but flawed representation of my home country, Tibet. Air nomads are devout pacifist monks/nuns who live in the high mountains, an extremely common and one-dimensional racial stereotype of tibetans and the religion of tibetan buddhism by westerners and western media.
The complete genocide of the peaceful air nation by the technologically advanced fire nation directly represents the invasion and occupation of tibet by the peoples republic of china (PRC) in 1959. the PRC directly caused the deaths of millions of Tibetans through murder, warfare, pillaging etc. Tibet is now one of the most oppressed countries in the world (https://www.freetibet.org/about/human-rights), with no freedom of speech/religion, mass internet and media censorship, prison torture, forced assimilation into han society, police brutality, and cultural destruction and erasure by the chinese government. (Its so bad that hundreds of Tibetans are committing mass suicide through self-immolation https://savetibet.org/tibetan-self-immolations/) while geographically avatar’s fire nation might resemble japan, while earth nation seems more similar to China, the fire nation government and mission to conquer and colonize are in direct accordance to the approach of both imperialist Japan and the PRC. The Tibetan population numbers have been severely reduced bc of chinese occupation, with the threat of cultural extinction through murder and assimilation being a big concern in the community. With Tibetans having a very sensitive history of oppression, genocide, and constant brutal suffering, having media content for children about tibetan-like people being completely massacred to extinction bc they’re too peaceful isn’t exactly tasteful.
One of the main faults of the show I cannot forgive is the use of “cool flashy asian” words/names used in the show that in reality have tragic political context, like lake laogai: Laogai 勞改 (https://laogairesearch.org/laogai-system/) are real Chinese prison camps that hold hundreds of thousands of tibetan (and chinese, and other minority groups of china) political prisoners (normally activists who protest for justice and freedom). they “reform” people through unethical slave labor, and many prisoners have painfully starved to death. Thousands of real people (including family members and friends of mine) suffered and died without right to fair trial and humane living conditions, and the treatment of human beings in the laogai is an extremely horrifying and obvious abuse of human rights.
I feel like a response to this might be “why are these representations offensive? you can make a show that addresses and promotes awareness of issues and its not offensive! its a good thing that helps!” but the problem with avatar is that the real world comparisons that the show makes are never actually explained or clarified to the viewers. with most of the target audience knowing absolutely nothing about tibet/asia and these real political issues, all of these references go right over their head. The average viewer will believe this show is using original ideas when its actually desensitizing a real and horrible history. Using politics that reference the real suffering and deaths of millions of people and not having the courtesy to properly acknowledge it isn’t funny or cute. And even worse, using stereotyped caricatures instead of a more accurate representation of the culture you’re “borrowing” from just makes your content outright disrespectful.
tumblr user atla-annotated said this in a post about the use of laogai in avatar which I think better words my point:
“I personally feel that when drawing from dark real world events/situations (especially if you are using the real term and are not substituting i.e. Air Nomads - Tibet vs. Lake Laogai), and if those events are not that well known to your audience, you are obligated to give context, be it in the form of interviews, the art book, on the website (there are loads of options). Why? Because it is disrespectful. Bad shit happened to real people, real people suffered in those camps and having fans off and online referring to said camps without knowing what they are saying is not cool.”
2. Promotion of Cultural Appropriation and Insensitivity
if you’re a poc who is very close to your culture, it will become pretty obvious to u that this show is written by white people. you can especially tell in episodes that address culture/religion and appropriation, bc they have absolutely no idea what they’re doing. one thing that stuck with me since I was a kid was that northern air temple episode. aang saw those earthbenders destroy and deface the air temple and got rightly upset, but it was treated as the wrong way of thinking. even when i was a dumb kid i never understood this. when i projected onto this character I did feel like aang (despite being a racial caricature) had every fucking right to be angry and hurt?? these temples are a part of his religion, his culture, his faith and his way of life? seeing the last remnants of your extinct people and culture being destroyed and defiled by sewage would obviously be offensive? but his feelings are disregarded bc that guy who’s making tech for the fire nation, the literal murderers of the entire air nation, is important too or whatever. instead of the message being “appreciate past cultures and their religious artifacts/temples and live alongside them respectfully”, it was “cultural preservation is stupid if it stands in the way of better technology” which feel like a very colonial way of looking at culture, esp by the PRC, bc of how communism considers religion to be a hindrance to revolution. also the fact that the prc destroyed thousands of holy tibetan monasteries for chinese shopping malls and parking lots.
Also in legend of korra the whole “neo non-airbender airbender” cult on that island parallel real western cults (white hippies with dreads) obsessed with living what they think is a “tibetan lifestyle”. they appropriate and fetishize tibetan religion and culture, to the extent of being condescending, racist, and disrespectful towards real tibetans and invading tibetan spaces (”it might be tibetan culture, but tibetans just dont get it like we do”). I remember my sister reading a comic where tenzin or someone was upset at these non-airbender’s blatant appropriation, but his feelings were shut down for the message “anyone can be a part of this culture bc tibetans airbenders r all dead lol!!1! we keep it alive!!” like, wow, Mike and Bryan, ik u think all tibetans are doomed for extinction but thanks for that.
3. Ignorant Fanbase
Last, about the fans. Because the show’s previously mentioned lack of educating/raising awareness towards what this show references, many fans tend to be very (sometimes unintentionally) racist and insensitive towards aspects of cutures/tradition that avatar borrowed from the real world (the most common I see is fans butchering pictures of his holiness the dalai lama, the most sacred religious figure for tibetans to make a shitty avatar joke. He’s the reincarnation of an enlightened being, even his photographs are supposed to b treated with RESPECT). Because of this, praising the show to high heaven bc of its racial “representation” when its actually racist caricature feels kind of shitty.
also this isnt necessarily “problematic” but the “are u named tenzin after the guy from avatar” line from nerds is literally SO ANNOYING and SO COMMON, especially when its the name of his holiness the Dalai Lama (Tenzin Gyatso, both his auspicious first and last name were used in the show) and the most common tibetan name ever (We have a tradition of high lamas giving their names to our children as a blessing, which is why every other Tibetan you meet will be named Tenzin). so if you like avatar and you’ve never met a tibetan before, please dont ask weird shit like if their name is from avatar or if tibetans are like the funny blue arrow monks (i’ve gotten that one before) its fucking irritating.
Honestly, I normally don’t really have such a big problem with white ppl writing tibetan characters. Its all stereotypes and monks and ignorance, but im so desperate for representation i usually halfass accept it anyways. but i just couldn’t handle the way the writers of avatar are so obviously insensitive and idiotic while going out of their way to try and use “~huge political messages~” that they dont understand and dont want their fans to actually learn more about. If the writers did some actual research and made avatar respectful towards Tibetans and raise awareness about tibetan/PRC politics I would have definitely appreciated it. But they didn’t.
also the movie is just its own shitshow, but I hate how everyone thinks the cartoon is okay when it really isn’t.
also a plug for the crew https://studentsforafreetibet.org/
this is getting attention again so i edited it a little with some links. its been like 4 years since i wrote this so i like to think my writing ability is better…but i dont want to completely rewrite out this whole thing again.
avatar the last airbender is just a product of a larger phenomenon. the fantastical depiction of tibet in western media is a solidified pillar in tibetan studies as a form of new age orientalism born due to a complex history of racial imbalance, cultural appropriation and deep misunderstanding.
Prisoners of Shangri-La by Donald S Lopez is an essential work in contemporary Tibetan Studies relating to how orientalism damages our political goals and autonomy:
the best female characters are the ones that online discourse calls annoying and cannot stand. this is a fact sorry. the more hated she is by the online sphere the better her character is sorry
> medical problem

I think ao3 is literally the only site where no censorship means no censorship. you can post the most vile things on there — things that will get taken down on any other platforms — and ao3 will protect you, your works, and your rights to create whatever you want, however you want.
and no, this isn’t me saying “write that messed up, disgusting thing” because while, yes, write it if it’s what you want (I myself enjoy writing dark fics, something I believe would be considered “vile” to a lot of people), this is me saying in a world of censorship and capitalism, ao3 really is a treasure.
"He gave up the avatar state for her!!!" And i unironically cannot name a better way to piss katara off. Imagine your buddy gives up his ability to end a war thats lasted 100 years and ravaged your homeland, all because he wants to kiss you, and you aren't even sure if you return the sentiment. All of your and the whole world's hopes are riding on him and he just doesnt give a shit. Id kick his ass so hard
Imagine having that much faith in someone and their abilities only for that person to not follow through because he wants to be selfish about his attachment to you.
I would be so pissed off. No wonder he never told her.
