a team of scientists, in a groundbreaking analysis of data from hundreds of sources, has concluded that humans are on the verge of causing unprecedented damage to the oceans and the animals living in them.

"we may be sitting on a precipice of a major extinction event,” said douglas j. mccauley, an ecologist at the university of california, santa barbara, and an author of the new research.

the study notes, for example, that bottom trawlers scraping large nets across the sea floor have already affected 20 million square miles of ocean, turning parts of the continental shelf to rubble.

Shark Fin Soup

I believe that the consumption and sale of shark fin soup needs to end. Yes it is a traditional delicacy in Asia but it no longer has a place in our modern culture. It is responsible for the declining shark and ray population (people have been illegally selling ray fins as shark fins.) and it is quickly destroying our oceans.

We have to make an effort to stop this. If we don't we will loose our sharks to this practice. Our oceans are not worth loosing for soup. since the 1970's 95% of several shark species have been destroyed. Now as the sharks are disapearing people are starting to illegally sell ray fins as shark fins and their populations are beginning to take a hit. AND ITS ALL FOR A BOWL OF SOUP!

Cant we all just go on without this? So please help stop this horrible practice and let our sharks keep their fins. If you want to help you can start by making a pledge at:

Don't let an animal that survived the dinosaurs be undone by this barbaric practice. There is so much you can do. Start by telling people. There are so many who don't even know this is happening and they need to. Get on facebook, youtube, twitter or whatever you use and get the word out there. Shark Finning

Shark finning is a horrible practice that I feel very strongly about. It is, in its essence the systematic killing of sharks and the selling of their fins. Sharks are hunted and captured, be it by hook, net or chumming and harpoon, then they are pulled on the boat alive. Instead of taking 5 or 6 sharks and selling them at market (because every part of the shark is in fact usable) they cut the fins off of hundreds of sharks and throw them back.

The sharks then they drown or bleed to death. I would really like to call attention to this /horrible/ practice because it is destroying our oceans. Without its apex predator, our oceans ecosystems will collapse. With about 100 million dying each year we cant afford to wait any longer. Were loosing our sharks and their numbers may not be able to bounce back. We have to do something now. This is a link to a awesome piece about the practice.

The best way you can help to stop this horrible practice is to start spreading awareness. So many people don't know this is happening and have no idea that we are loosing our oceans sharks. But if you can spread the word then maybe we can stop this. If you see it on a menu at a restaurant then work to get it taken off. Talk about it online, let the word know.
